Dudek was just the nicest guy. There was no malice in him at all. He wasn't a blackmailer, he wasn't holding something over the killer, he wasn't trying to cut him out of a will, he was just a guy who happened to better at chess than the antagonist. But treated him with nothing but respect and kindness.

I'm not a grandmaster to say the least, but the chess at the start - all you'd do is move the queen back to cover the King, yeah you lose the queen but your bishop comes back on the diagnonal and takes the rook and danger averted.

I think out of all the villains he is by far the worst one, not in terms of acting just in terms of motive. Usually it's greed or ambition but here it's failure, that's his big reason to kill someone. Most killers on Columbo are evil, he's just pathetic.
@vibovitold
@vibovitold Год назад
not sure if literally the worst, but certainly one of them. a lot of killers on Columbo committed a crime because they'd suffer highly unpleasant consequences if they didn't - which doesn't justify the killings, but still. all that would happen to this guy would be losing the World Champion title, and still remain an elite and renowned player, perfectly capable of challenging the new champion (a clearly older guy, by the way) in the next championship cycle.

chess in movies and TV used to be notoriously poor up until a point. when the pieces were set in any legal position whatsoever, that was already quite an achievement by the standard of the era. I'm not even saying they were more lazy - the viewers were just fine with that, more accepting of such hand-waving.

Love these stories, but on occasion they have plot holes big enough to fly a Concorde through. In this episode, how does the deaf villain, whose hearing aid has gone out of service leading him to bungle the murder, lure his victim to the scene of the crime with a telephone call that same night? Moreover, if Mr. Dudek was on medication, wouldn't his prescriptions have been in Russian? Either the young lady, who spoke Russian, would have written the prescriptions in Russian herself, or if they were in English, when the villain got to Dudek's hotel room, how would he have been able to interpret the Russian medications to align with whatever English he had written down in order to substitute the right ones? The drama was fun, the performances entertaining, but the plot is like something someone came up with over breakfast and went right to production.
