The Most Dangerous Patients: Inside France's High-Security Mental Health Facility for Severe Offenders
0:00 Full documentary
0:13 🏥 The Unité pour Patients Difficiles (UDP) in Cadillac, France, is a high-security facility that houses 90 male patients with severe mental illnesses, some of whom have committed heinous crimes.
9:54 😔 Daniel, a patient with psychosis and OCD, is one of the most fragile patients in the unit, and his anxiety is heightened by the presence of Karam. The strict schedule and routine in the unit help anchor the patients' illnesses in reality, but any disruption can be unbearable for them. Daniel struggles with his own symptoms and the symptoms of others, but has learned alternative ways to cope with his violent tendencies. The activities provided by the occupational therapy team offer a breath of fresh air for the patients, allowing them to express themselves and boost their self-esteem.
19:53 💡 Jean-Pierre, a patient in a psychiatric unit, discusses his experiences with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and his struggles with sexual impulses.
29:10 😢 Patients at the UDP share their experiences and desire for release, but face challenges in proving their readiness to leave.
38:32 😢 Eric's mother shares the heartbreaking story of her son's battle with schizophrenia and drug addiction.
48:37 😷 Daniel, a patient with OCD, is passionate about politics and sports and wants to watch a football match until the end, but his obsessive thoughts and routines make it difficult to compromise with him.
57:55 🏥 Patients at the UDP are locked in their rooms at night for their own protection, and one patient, Florent, who has a history of violence, is particularly concerning to the nurses.
1:08:32 💪 The patients at UDP participate in the Olympic Games, showcasing their progress and teamwork.
1:18:44 🏥 Patients in a French psychiatric hospital share their experiences and hopes for the future.

MAN IS A SICK, SADISTIC, SELFISH, GREEDY, COLD, HEARTED BEAST. THE PAST WARS AND ATROCITIES PROVE IT AND MAN WOULD BE A MILLION TIMES WORSE IF THERE WERE NO CONSEQUENCES FOR THEIR ACTIONS. WHICH THE GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD HAVE PROVEN BECAUSE THEY MAKE THE RULES AND LIVE BY THEIR OWN, WHICH MEANS THEY COULD KILL MILLIONS AND IT WOULD BE JUST A STATISTIC, BUT IF A HUMAN CIVILAN KILLS ITS CALLED MURDER. WHEN THE GOVERNMENT KILLS ITS CALLED ETHNIC CLEANSING, COLLATERAL DAMAGED, POLITICAL OR RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION, CONQUERING, DEMOCIDE OR THE GREAT PURGE. MAN IS A BEAST AND WILL KILL TO ENSURE ITS OWN SURVIVAL AND ENSURE ITS POWER DRUNK DESIRES ARE FULFILLED. LIFE HAS NO VALUE, WE ARE JUST A NUMBER AND EASILY REPLACEABLE. I had psychosis. The psychiatrists were horribly abusive. They court ordered antipsychotics that they were allowed to tackle me to the ground, shoot me full of antipsychotics, and they were going to get a court order to put me in a supervised longterm outpatient program with forced medication. I was hospitalized almost 50 times over a decade. Just found out I have a central nervous system disorder (fighting insurance to get an MRI). Most likely MS. They were forcing antipsychotics on me when I needed an MRI, a proper diagnosis, and medications to treat what was actually wrong with me. Trust me when I say the doctors were outright abusive. They thought I had bipolar with psychosis, they figured I would never be listened to. The minute I get my MRI scans back, and have proof they misdiagnosed me, I am going for those doctors jobs. The psychiatrists can be downright psychopaths and there is no way to get help if you are a patient.

People around me become anxious, or defensive, because of how I come across. I'm aware of it all, but I can't stop it. I fear I will end up in a place like this. I'm not even a stranger to the mental health team. I'm under their care. If I don't take my cocktail of medications I'm a problem. If I take them, I'm a zombie. I don't want to be the person I am, but I have lost control of my own emotions, and sometimes behaviour. I've never felt stress like this. It's draining and no way to live. This is the kind of thing we are in dire need of in the US. Locked units that provide HELPFUL and appropriate treatment are all but nonexistent. There are so few, most won’t get help; there’s not enough room. It saddens me because I have seen what real help can do. I’ve also worked in these units my entire career and get so upset we spend so much time trying to find placement for these folks only for them to ultimately be left out back on the street or in jail and it tears me apart. We could avoid such common societal problems, crime, creating a happier and more well communities if we had the resources to provide these services. I’ve worked for some six years or so in high security mental institutions in both Norway and Sweden - and actually I just now returned from a friend of aged 70 she’s been in out all her life. What say; well - this is part of their personality - their identity. This is who they are. You wanna change who you are ?

I have lived on both sides of mental illness. To be held hostage to the infirmities of your mind is definitely a horror, viewing the aftermath and owning the path of destruction that is not completely of your own doing is a struggle in and of itself. The onus of responsibility lies with me but to be responsible for a defect that i had no part in creating takes its toll on the soul. That accountability for my parents crimes against me is a hard one to bear.

21:07 JP is right at what he says right here.. well for some people… for many people who suffer from mental health illness that is very complex, people dont want to take the time to sit down and understand their hell. so they are locked up/ away and medicated to keep them quiet. Just because they dont want to understand/ learn how much of a hell the person is going through.

It's not to keep them quiet. At least not in this documentary. Maybe the USA does it differently over there but I assume you have some sort of rehabilitation systems? It is truly to help them, the meds can alleviate so much suffering. The problem is that each cause of schizophrenia is different, so it takes a long time to find the right medication. And it extremely difficult for them to reliably take their meds on their own. So the way the medicine works is by slowing down a brain that is firing too much, that works in overdrive. Sadly slowing the brain down is all we can do at this time, but the meds have already improved massively in the last 50 years.

This was sensitive and revealing, but it reminded me that people who cannot get the help they need will self-medicate. We in the US are gradually trying to remove old stereotypes that the 'alcohol and drugs' are the problem, when what they are, for so many people with psychological trauma or inner brain damage, a bandage.

Agree, mental illness causes a person to be more sedentary as is. Once a year sports event seemed rather lacking. The staff seemed really lovely.i hope it wasn't just for the camera though I love how the French men greet each other with a kiss on each cheek And not in a celeb air kiss kind of way. I did not feel any compassion for the sex offenders..I just struggle with that. The staff were amazingly non judementsl. Were I was. I could tell jhon-pierre was a sex offender before it was even mentioned. They just have a certain look and demeanour about them, especially as they age
@aichohvee
@aichohvee 7 месяцев назад
You have the right to feel that way, of course, but that seems a bit unfair. I would understand differentiating between a non-violent and violent offender, but with a violent one, whether acts of violence they commit are sexual in nature or not, the urges, desires and compulsions are caused by their pathology. So why make the distinction?

Severe mental illness is so hard to treat and stigma doesn't help. Some of the drugs used can cause motor dysfunction (ex. Halperidol- tardive dyskinesia) as well as other side effects. Convincing a patient to keep taking meds can be difficult. I hope that we can continue to make advancements in pharmaceuticals, increasing funding for care as well as in educating the general public.

So many patients with mental illness actually seem to benefit from a secure, stable, organised environment like this. Not all. There are people who would really struggle in places like this, but we need more safe environments to actually help people BEFORE they commit violent crimes or hurt themselves. But we also need to ensure that the predators are kept out of control of them, because unfortunately predators are drawn to places they can hurt others.

I am from Scotland and have grown up in an area where the 1st mental hospital was build unfortunately no longer active ( i say unfortunately because it was/ has been a place of safety for many people as well as a place to learn because it was a self running hospital at the beginning) there is a wall around the grounds which the town people would say “that is there to keep the insane people away for us normal people). I have always turned right back around and saying “ NO it is there not to protect the ILL people away from you ‘normal’ people but to keep you away from them”. that has always been the case and for me whether it is a hospital or a mental health prison that is the truth.. Being in a prison would a walk in the park for many people who are in a mental health unit, purely because they are not just in a prion but they are in HELL. For people who have not been tho mental illness they have NO idea how hard it is to be completely LOCKED in your own head 24/7/366 for some their whole life. It really brakes my heart to see ANYONE like this, alone, not physically but alone mentally. I wish anyone who says that mental health is an excuse for what that person has done could spend 7 days inside their head and just see how hard is to “TRY” and life. 6:25

To understand how mental health effects the body & being so aware of this....when he was going into decline his body folding & they were able so quickly to raise him back up just in awe. Bravo to all those who are a part of these patients lives it is obvious your systems are working. Unfortunately the marijuana is a giant business now and these experiences and data that comes from them are buried and pushed aside, ignored - to the detriment of many.
