@@danielrichardson6577 how's AU terrible? Haven't visited AU, but from the internet and media, I'd say it's far more civilised and with better public infrastructure than Romania. As a romanian, from a government POV, I can say we have politicians that could set world records for corruption, and education and healthcare are Ferentari like compared to AU.

Exactly what I was going to say, he hasn’t seen the worst part of it😂 my dad had an aunt who ended up in a studio in ferentari after some bad deals she made, and I went there with my dad a few times to help her out with stuff. That place was way worse when apparently it was still not the roughest part! But the amount of garbage, and the lack of metal.. there was a block with no doors and no railing, everything that could be stolen and scrapped, had been. But in terms of safety, it’s still pretty safe if you mind your business. Probably safer than all cities in America 😂 It’s just not pretty

You are about 20 years late, no neighborhood is dangerous anymore in Romania. The generations that were really bad and scary are all grown up and they don't have the energy for that kind of life anymore, so I'm not impressed of anyone visiting Ferentari in this period or any neighborhood in Romania for that matter. Everyone is peaceful, no spectacle to see!

You’ll find this type of brutalist architecture all over the eastern block of Europe. Some of these places might even not be too bad but they just look gloomy and unsafe. I think you’ll be fine as a tourist, the mafia usually just leaves tourists alone because their business model isn’t robbing tourists but racketeering and all the other traditional criminal forms of generating income. The only place I’ve ever felt unsafe was in Casablanca, Morocco. When you have groups of 10 men following you asking for money, then getting on a bus full of football hooligans, it’s definitely a bit intimidating.

I live in Bucharest and I know Ferentari s reputation but I never been there. Judging just by the news on tv (not an accurate metric, agree) the place is left just with the reputation as I saw on tv no major crimes committed in there (such as shootings and stuff which are anyway extremely rare in Romania so if it happens will make Breaking News) and as we all noticed, with junkies and poverty.

Yeah there is nothing redeeming about Ferentari. I live in romania and let me tell you, it's not the only gypsy slum in the country. All the places where you have a lot of gypsies end up looking like this. There is another place in a city called Baia Mare where the mayor built these beautiful fully furnished apartments as social housing for gypsies, and if you go there now, it's a fucking slum like you wouldn't believe. They even tore the electric wires out to sell the copper and when they were repaired, they did it again. Eventually it got so bad, and the crime went so bad, that the mayor built a fence around the slum. So yeah...

And this is how it is today, it cleaned up a lot. The dangerous area retreated to the furthermost zone, towards the edge of the city. A friend of mine lived in that area you first shown in the video as the "safe zone". Like, 10-some years ago, people were getting curbstomped (literally) for mere pennies. Ferentari, at least the area towards that bus station you got off, is actually a somewhat decent place to live in. There aren't really any metro stations there (for obvious reasons), but it's extremely cheap housing. 7:35 That's just a trash chute. It goes straight into a dumpster at the bottom. 7:47 That's not actually poor people living there, look at the cars. The inside of the appartments is fully rennovated. You can search for online appartment selling ads. The exterior of the buildings is the only dirty part of it. Besides not being freshly painted, the inside of the building at 7:23 was squeaky clean. Just look at the floor. 9:38 Some buldings have started the rehabilitation program. The ones on the left have been thermally insulated and repainted. Yeah, besides the southern area, the rest is chill. Poorer than the rest of Bucharest, but not extremely broke. Like i said, the safe and nice areas have been expanding. I remember when i was in school, Ferentari was A LOT worse. Like, that begening area was rough. It wasn't uncommon to see people on the street with knives in their hands. My mom was taken by Google Maps once through the heart of Ferentari, like, way back in the day. This is why i'm talking so light of that area now. You can't even imagine how worse it was, if now you consider it being one of the worst places you've been to. I was actually looking for appartments in that area, like, 2 years ago.

@rain-cy6ve
@rain-cy6ve 10 месяцев назад
There are diffrrent levels of richness in countries in the EU. You really cannot compare countries like France or Germany to Romania or Bulgaria; they simply had more time and resources to get rich. We in Romania only got 30 years to esentially build a new nation and new economy from almost 0. But to be completely fair, slums like those exist in almost every EU country. Usually it s neighbourhoods inhabited by gypsies or arabic and african imigrants

Ok guys I'm from Germany I know the different levels of richness in the EU. But still I think it's very shocking to see a country like Romania and then see my country or even more-developed countries like Sweden or Finland being all in the EU. And btw there are bad areas in Germany but not as bad as the areas in Romania. And if they do exist in Germany they are not as far as big.

@@ZICO_BEATSGermany is far less safe than Romania. In Romania, even in big cities you can basically walk anywhere at night without any problems. It’s also cleaner, Germany is far from what it used to be 15/20 yrs ago. Koln for example looks like a shithole compared to Bucharest :)
@ZICO_BEATS
@ZICO_BEATS 10 месяцев назад
@@qvasar89g73 I can't really compare both countries bc I was never in Romania but it's very hard to believe that Germany is worse than Romania. I mean of course Germany is worse than 20 years ago, but there are not as far as many bad places with lots of poverty as in Romania. If you take for example Köln, only one place (Kölnberg/Köln-Meschenich) is looking like this place in Bucharest. And Kölnberg is not even that big, it's just like 4 blocks. And to be fair there are not many other places in Germany that are unsafe at night, probably only Frankfurt Bahnhof, Berlin Kottbusser Tor or St. Pauli in Hamburg. And that's basically it. Considering the fact that Germany has also way more inhabitans that Romania I think Germany is still much safer and less run-down than Romania.

I was raised in Rahova, right next to Ferentari, in the 90's and 00's. Back then you could say they were dangerous, in the sense that you'd have a lot of gypsies and low income households. Nowadays both of them have calmed down, the dudes that were trouble back then are either dead, in prison, or off to western Europe to steal/beg. At this point in time, if you just mind your own business, nobody bothers you on the streets. Yeah, you get the occasional junkie, prostitute, beggar here and there but generally if you're not looking for trouble it doesn't tend to find you. My mum grew up and still lives in Ferentari, so I'm basically there once every couple of days. It's just one of those places that looks worse than it is. As opposed to rough areas in the western world which tend to look a little better on the surface, but where you get shot or stabbed just because you exist.

Bro, relax, you are too stressed out. I actually live in Ferentari and it's nice. Ferentari is one of the three neighbourhoods that make sector 5 of Bucharest. There are some areas that have littering issues. There are some poor areas. The worse is "Aleea Livezilor". There are some dealers and addicted. They don't like being filmed as many came and exaggerated things, talk bad about them. The bad areas are quite limited. But they are not dangerous, unless you flash expensive items, walk around with a selfie stick, or try to pick up a fight. Just be aware, be respectful and all will be good. You walked around and noone pick on you and you were visibly stressed out. This neighbourhood was a lot different 15-20 years ago, violence wise. The cable you got scared of was fiber optics so no danger. Somebody cut it. The "prison" seems to be a private company and they fenced off so nobody would be tempted to get in. As a Romanian born and bread in Bucharest :D - Ferentari is not a suburb, it is a neighborhood. I think there's some political and economy implications. A suburb would be administrated by a local mayors office. Ferentari is administrated by the Bucharest General City Hall and also the 5th District City Hall. The 5 district also administrates one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the city - Cotroceni. - 5:49 we have some even older trams (the Tatras) still woring on different lines :D - 7:33 - that long ass tin pipe is either an exterior garbage shoot, or a chimney tower for a restaurant located at the ground floor. If it's a restaurant they are oblidged by law to release the smoke above the building, and not into their windows :) - 10:51 - many of the residents in those buildings are drug users and ex-cons, illiterates, people who have turned their back to the system and the system turned its back to them. They live day to day, doing oddjobs to survive (foraging scrap metal, petty crime and so on) . Unfortunately these people exist in many countries and a city as big as Bucharest will naturally attract them. I hope you enjoyed your time in Bucharest :)

Poverty and decay in that particular neighbourhood? For sure Very dangerous? Not really and you can take this from someone born, raised and who lived in Bucharest for 35 years. For 5 years I've been living in Berlin and I can tell you that everytime I'm going to certain areas of the city I have to look over my shoulder and keep a suficient amount of room between myself and other dodgy looking people on the street so that I can avoid any potential stabbing. Also being extra careful not staying too close to the ledge of the subway stations lol. Overall, it's 10x more dangerous here than in any area you can find in Bucharest, Romania or in most of eastern Europe for that matter, where the worst that can happen to you is to get robbed and maybe receive a couple of slaps and even that can be avoided with a bit of street smarts and common sense. Here, in Berlin, you can actually get killed. Don't even get me started on the possibility of a terrorist attack which is 100x higher in any large city in western europe than in eastern europe.

Exactly my thoughts. I'm from Poland living in UK and I only found out that actually Poland is much safer, after I moved out. I never realized that before as the narration of the western media is the oposite. E.g. you don't get to see much poverty or dangerous stuff in the town centres in easter parts of Europe - it's more in the neighbourhoods (with mostly locals living there, bit poor, alkohol, theft etc.) It's the oposite in UK (plus some rough neighbourhoods or streets too).
