Dolly herself loves this version, considers it to be one of the best covers of this iconic song. Jack can just rip your heart out. The White Stripes are seriously underrated. People give him crap because it's not vocally perfect, but the raw and unfiltered anguish is exactly why it's so beautiful.
From my observations it´s unfortunately more like most people don´t care to make a distiction between a voice (that you can like or dislike) and vocal performance. And then they have the guts to call themselves "music lovers"... ;)

Perfect reaction to Jack & Meg doing Dolly's JOLENE! Jack is as charismatic as he is talented -- and this rock version of Jolene really gets to the heart of the matter. I mean seeing Dolly do her song is also unbelievable-- as the lyrics are so raw anyway. But Jack takes the song to another level...as he does with most of his performances
you mention that he's playing the hell out of his guitar, and i just had to bring to the table the fact that this performance was recorded not too long after he had surgery on his left index finger. he broke it in a car accident, had some screws put in it, and then had to re-learn a bunch of chords and riffs using the other three fingers on his left hand. he could never curl his left index finger all the way in again but adapted and continued to rock our socks off for years to come. an interesting and impressive little tidbit
This is a thunderbolt to the heart. The song is already amazing, always has been, but Jack's emotion makes it feel like he is on his knees literally begging. Brilliant.
I have watched the White Stripes video many times but it was when you said, "Oh my god, the pain" it really struck hard. Middle aged people know this shit.
This reminds me a lot of Nirvana also doing a Dolly Parton song called In the Pines (where did you sleep last night?). They did it live on the MTV Unplugged and it wouldn't surprise me if that was Jack's inspiration to cover Jolene.
It was a different cover I liked it but have to stick with Dolly on this one. There is a new dance version to the song but with Dolly's vocals. Thanks for continuing to introduce new music

If you prefer Dollys version, then go watch Dolly reaction videos. This version is 100% epic! There is no other performance of any song with this level of pain and anguish. Jack White brings it with every fiber of his being, he holds nothing back.
For the people saying: 1. Dolly did it best. It's not a competition. It's a cover. 2. Listen to Dolly's version. Every reaction site on RU-vid listened to Jolene in week 1. Followed by Tom Jones and The Righteous Brothers. 3. It changes the meaning. That is what a cover version is supposed to do, bring something different to the table. Otherwise, get a tape recorder. 4. Jack White is trying to sing the role of the girl being cheated on. BS. He is singing the role of a gay guy whose bisexual lover is sleeping with a woman. And realizes there is nothing he can do to compete with her. One of Dolly's great strengths is writing songs that lend themselves to covers. One trick she uses is for the first person role not to be gendered. The singer here is not identified as man or woman. Only Jolene and the cheating man have a gender. The singer can be anyone.
I tried to enjoy this, but Dolly is the only one that can sing this song in my heart. I can appreciate that he wanted to give it honor and that he brought the song out to a new generation. Its just not my cup of tea, but its always good to listen to new music and give it a chance.
I think it makes more sense being sung to a woman by her man's secret gay lover. It's almost more believable bc in today's world women don't beg other women to keep a man. The twist of making this about a gay man who has fallen in love with a more closeted man keeps the song fresh.

The guy you thought was "something else" before continues to be something else. You just feel the need to recoil now because you have trouble with the idea that someone who has different views than you can still be great.

Another great song of Dolly Parton wrote and Whitney Houston covered is I will always love you, it’s very different from Whitney’s version, but absolutely beautiful/ just do an early ( 1970’s) version
I'm sorry but these folks butchered Dolly Parton's beautiful song. I know I'm supposed to be supportive and "nice" about these things - but I just can't on this one.
Well .... This version was only OK. A bit different ................. In my opinion, it's OK for those not familiar with the original, but not OK for those who have heard Dolly Parton's version ...... In all fairness though, you need to hear the original by Dolly ....................... (Or maybe I'm just too old to appreciate some of these younger 'talents' ??? - My kids refer to me as a 'dinosaur') ............................... Had a good laugh when you played Joe Tex a few days ago (Ain't Gonna Bump No More) ................. Thanks.
