On so many levels, David Sconce’s story is one that deathcare professionals don’t like to hear. His tale of deception, greed, and complete disregard for tradition, decency, and even the law is disgraceful. It’s a true shame that his name has to be connected to the funeral industry at all. Yet, somehow Sconce continues to make news 22 years after authorities discovered burning body parts in a ceramics kiln Sconce was using as a makeshift crematory.
When Hesperia, California assistant fire chief received a call in January 1987 from a man complaining about noxious smoke pouring from a neighboring industrial building, he scoffed at the man’s accusation that the smoke smelled like burning flesh.
“I said, ‘I don’t think so, it’s a ceramics shop,’” the chief later told the Los Angeles Times. “But then the man said, ‘Don’t tell me they’re not burning bodies. I was at the ovens at Auschwitz.’”
The macabre morgue
Oscar Ceramics was the latest in a string of shady money-making schemes for David Sconce, a failed college football player and fourth-generation crematory owner. His great-grandfather, Lawrence Lamb, purchased the Pasadena Crematorium in Altadena, California a few years before starting Lamb Funeral Home in 1929 just two miles away.
David’s mother Laurieanne Lamb Sconce and her husband Jerry bought out the family business from her father in 1985. After David dropped out of college, worked as a casino dealer and a hockey stadium usher, and was unable to pass the police department’s vision test, his parents convinced him to get his embalmer’s license and join the family business at age 26.
Finding embalming school “boring,” David decided to leverage the family’s crematorium as an entrepreneurial opportunity. He would attract business from area funeral homes with his half-priced cremations and make up for the low cost with high volume. His business plan caught on, and business boomed. Built in 1895, the Pasadena Crematorium offered only two ovens, each of which David would stuff with five, six, and eventually as many as 18 bodies at a time. As profits grew, so did David’s sick ego. Dubbed “the Cremation King of California” by a journalist, David equipped his new Corvette with vanity plates reading “I BRN 4 U.”
In 1986, David Sconce and his parents expanded the family enterprise with the creation of Coastal International Eye and Tissue Bank. The sole purpose of the company was to facilitate David’s already-flourishing side gig trafficking organs he’d removed from soon-to-be-cremated bodies. If consent for the removals was not offered, David’s mother would forge the signature of a family member. Harvested hearts, eyes, and brains were then sold on the black market for up to $95 a pop.
Later, David’s cash-paid employees would tell horrific tales of “Little Hitler’s” (as they called him) joy at “popping chops,” his term for extracting gold teeth, which he’d sell to a local jeweler for an extra $6,000 each month. They said David would lift and carry cardboard-enclosed corpses around the facility for exercise, use a crowbar to crack open sternums, and store eyeballs in used cola cans.
The beginning of the end
Although the crematorium’s ovens would eventually operate 24 hours a day, David Sconce continued to push the limits of maximum capacity. On November 23, 1986, the nearly century-old facility burned to the ground after David’s employees somehow shoved 19 bodies into each of the ovens at once.
David Sconce’s 1989 trial resulted in a five-year prison term for mutilating corpses, conducting mass cremations, and having his employees “rough up” three rival morticians. While serving his sentence, he narrowly escaped charges for the murder of the owner of a local crematorium, although David had openly bragged to his lackies that he’d slipped deadly oleander into the man’s drink the day he died. At the time, the charges wouldn’t stick because three toxicologists couldn’t agree that oleander was the cause of death.
David ultimately served only two-and-a-half years of his sentence and was released in 1991. His sentence also carried the caveat of lifetime probation, which he violated often in multiple ways, including selling forged bus tickets in Arizona and attempting to pawn a stolen rifle in Montana (he and his parents were penniless after settling a $15.4 million dollar lawsuit out of court in 1992). When he was extradited back to California for his parole violations, David pleaded guilty to conspiring to hire a hit-man to execute yet another rival and in 2013 was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

My son is a funeral director where I live. It’s the state law that a loved be present during a cremation of that loved ones body. I know that maybe a very difficult thing to do for someone who lost their loved one but at least they know beyond a shadow of doubt that they are receiving their loved one back. I’m proud to say that my son chose this profession when he was a teen when he lost his 9 yr. old cousin to MRSA. He declared then that he wanted to become a funeral director. He is the most caring and loving person you could ever meet. People come in from miles away and ask for my son by name because he does such excellent work. Your reputation follows you and it shows that he has done a great job in his career. Now he works at 4 funeral homes throughout our area. I’m a very proud mama. This guy should have been put under the jail not in it… He’s a disgrace to the profession of the funeral business and the dignity of a reputable funeral director.

My dad died in 1986. My brother in law took care of the cremation arrangements. ( My dad was clear that he wanted to be cremated) He chose the Lamb funeral home. I don't remember how long after but two detectives showed up at my mom's door. My mom was at work and I answered the door. They said that they regreted to tell me that my dad's brain, eyes and heart were illegally sold to a research facility in either South or North Dakota by the Lamb funeral home. When my dad died, my sister went into labor. So in the morning my sister and her husband drove to the hospital and my mom and I drove to the Lamb funeral home in Pasadena. We lived in Mar Vista in West L.A. I remember telling my mom that she couldn't grab the steering wheel when we were on the freeway. She was terrified of the freeway and she had all types of PTSD problems from growing up in Nazi Germany. We made it there okay and I remember being greeted by Lorianne Lamb. She had this buffont hair do and I remember feeling that something wasn't right. Always listen to those feelings! I noticed in the contract that I was reading that it said that they might take 'Body tissue' I asked Loriann what that meant. She gave me some B.S. answer. She told my mom and I that she knew how hard it was to lose someone and told us her painful story of losing an Aunt or something like that. The detectives told me that they had found bones under the funeral home and that some of the sick men that were working there would slowdance with the elderly deceased women. They would also put a happy face on the outside of the cardboard that they wrapped the bodies in if the corpse had gold teeth. The first time that I testified in this case the trial was in Pasadena. I was very nervous and I kept trying to answer questions by shaking my head up and down or side to side for yes or no. The defense attorney got really frustrated with me and threw his hands up in disgust with me. The second trial that I testified at was on the same floor of where the O.J. trial was being held. Only the two trials were being held on that floor. As I was waiting to be called and sitting on a bench in the hallway, the O.J. jurors walked by me and most of them gave me a dirty look. Years later a man came up to my food table on a movie set and I told him that I knew him from somewhere. Did we work at a restaurant together? He said no but I kept pressing and he finally said, " Maybe you know me from a famous trial?" It was Kato Kalin. I told him about testifying on the same floor and he asked what the trial was about. I told him and he said that he was so sorry. He seemed like a nice guy. I wasn't nervous at all at this trial. Loriann Lamb was at the defense table and I just calmly told the prosecutor what she had told me at the funeral home. The defense attorney said that there was an inconsistency in my testimony from the first trial. I don't remember what she said it was. I think it had to do with the body tissue question that I had for Lorianne. Hey Scott, some guys just called me some months ago because the were doing a documentary on the Lamb funeral home. I let my sister Nancy take it on with them. They interviewed her in her home in Malibu. I'm sorry but I don't remember the names of the men or where the doc was shown. My sister's last name is Hathorn and her husband is a partner in a real estate company on Montana in Santa Monica if you want to track them down to ask them about the documentary. My sister no longer speaks to me. Our father was a very abusive person and I remember thinking when all this Lamb funeral home stuff went down, that only our father could hurt us even after he was dead. Thanks Scott for this RU-vid video, I really appreciate it. P.S. I had my boyfriend at the time watch my mother's cremation in 1996. poor guy. I got a strange phone call on that day on my answering machine. It was a woman's voice that just whispered, 'It's over.'

I wanted to be a funeral director when I was a teenager. Our funeral director took me and my little cousin on a tour of the funeral home. I tried to get my cousin to stay home I thought he'd get scared. I ended up freaking out that night. I didn't become a funeral director but went into nursing. My cousin on the other hand became a funeral director. He's been one for over 20 years. I'm very proud of him. He's even a co owner of a funeral home.

When my Mother was being cremated, our family were blessed that we could be with her, my brother pushed her into cremation oven, before that, we were allowed to open her coffin to say a final goodbye, so we knew it was her that was being cremated, it's not for everyone, but because we were there with her, it helped us except the reality of her death, it was actually surprisingly comforting

I have a story to share. As a newborn I had galactosemia and the doctor said I would die. I was feeling really bad for a long time and I thought it was because of my disorder. I was on a medication for 30 years and it started to give me very negative side effects. My new doctor changed the prescription and I am a brand new happy-go-lucky person full of zest for life. I am even writing a book. Thanks for your videos to help me get through this Scott❤

This reminds me of an incident that happened in 2002 at the Tri-State Crematory. The owner/manager wouldn't cremate the bodies that were brought there. He would dump them in the woods behind the building and give the families containers filled with cement. When he was investigated, they found 340 decomposing bodies on the property. Owner was sentenced to 12 years and was released in 2016.

The fact that he is out is just another sign our justice system is broken here in America. He should be in for life. The gross things he did, pulling golden teeth, selling brains etc makes him sound like a Gestapo Nazi officer. Good thing that Holocaust survivor turned him in. That survivor didnt need to witness evil like that again. Sorry what happened to your mother, she was lucky to have you there to protect her ti the end. On another story. Have you heard of the Chad Daybell, Lori Vallow Daybell case in Idaho? Lori's husband was shot and killed. Chads wife was suffocated in their bed. Loris 2 kids were killed and buried in Chad's freaking backyard. 17 days after Chads wifes funeral, he and Lori flew off to Hawaii and got married. Singing and dancing on the beach. Last year, Lori was sentenced to 3 life terms with no parole. On Thursday of this week, Chad was found guilty on all charges. Today, he was sentenced to death. He will sit on death row probably for the next 20 years. Broken families, broken homes, etc. I hope when you get the chance that you do a story on this. Thanks Scott for another great video ❤

Thankfully in the UK most of our crematoriums are separate from funeral directors. They are mostly owned by our local authorities. We do have some unscrupulous funeral directors. One of which, charges the bereaved for each time the deceased is brought in and out of the fridge/freezer and the mortician to reapply the make up for the family to visit in the Chapel of rest. On top of the £1000 he charges for a basic adult casket

When I arrived at her house, her husband informed me that they were doing an autopsy and I wouldn't be able to see her for a few days, while a young lady i didn't recognize peered out the bedroom window. The next day, she was cremated unbeknownst to me and according to her death certificate there was no autopsy. To this day, my heart hurts to think that she was alone, and my thoughts run rampant hoping she was treated with respect and not as a task that needed to be done. We lost our son in law from a motorbike accident in July last year. He was buried but my daughter was so worried that they wouldn’t treat him with respect Problem is you just never know what they do to your loved ones when you’re not around. It’s lovely to see an older property on the street. Most times the US seems to always want to demolish everything.

That is so understandable how distressing that would have been Scott, regarding the death of your mother. So sorry your family went through that. Just know the decisions you had to make were beyond your control during that Covid travesty. Covid has really degenerated humanity in many aspects. Yes, the only comfort the living has when a loved one passes is the respect and reverence to their remains when planning our goodbye’s in whatever way. ✌🏽🙏🏽

I feel so bad for all of the loved ones going through this heart breaking tragedy. Great video, Scott. RIP to the victims 😞

Absolutely DISGUSTING & HIGHLY DISRESPECTFUL!!!! to not only the deceased but, to the family putting that huge amount into the furnace . I mean how on earth can you verify the ashes of your deceased loved one from others. IMPOSSIBLE!!!! ☹️😠😡🤬👎 When this money making SCUMBAG!!! was eventually caught & prosecuted & sentenced to jail for what was SUPPOSED to be LIFE!!!! & was only released about 2 years ago. ( after serving X amount of years). Is a total OUTRAGE!!! on the justice system. I always thought LIFE ment LIFE imprisonment ment LIFE!!! Not in this case it went WRONG!!!! ☹️😠😡🤬👎

How much more horrible can it get than what this greedy monster has done?! These poor families who had no idea what was going on must have felt so much horror once they found out. And how does someone like this not be imprisoned for the rest of their life with no parole?! This system is really messed up. I have never liked cremation just because of things like this happening. How many places have gotten away with similar stuff we may never know. Scott, I feel so bad for you for having to make such a tough decision, but your mom knows any decision you made was with good intentions and only keeping her in mind. Covid was a terrible time and especially for people like you who lost and had to bury someone. I wouldn't have wanted to be in your shoes. I'm sure your heart was breaking throughout that whole ordeal and probably even now. But you did the best you could to make sure your mom was taken care of in the proper way, and that's all any of us can do. I feel so bad for these families. Their heart's are probably breaking, too. How devastating for all of them. To escape this life but still be a victim even afterward is unthinkable. What a disgusting person this heartless evil man was. My hope is always that no matter what happens on this earth, that a lot of family reunions will be happening later in heaven. So we will be reunited with our loved ones again. May all of these poor victims RIP ❤ 💐

From what I've learned, bodies are given a "tracking number" of sorts, there is a tag that is with the body through the whole process with an ID number given to that individual, from prepping the body, to grinding the bones in the cremulator, to the packaging of the remains. Bodies that go to funeral homes for embalming and burial have not discrepancies and scandals than cremations

One of THE first things you learn about in funeral director’s school in California, is the importance of cultivating compassion for stigma surrounding death, and around funeral directors/homes in general. It’s terrible to think that someone would think of turning a profit off of bereaved families! It’s so truly awful when you think of the level of malice it requires to turn away from a grief stricken person in that space, when they have lost everything, and to then only see dollar signs! There are stringent laws and ordnances thankfully in California specifically to prevent this type of thing from occurring, rest assured! The sad part is, the stigma still exists to this day which harms small businesses with the highest of ethical standards. Working intimately with deceased people requires a certain level of reverence for death that most people don’t have. There are many extremely compassionate people out there who are funeral directors/morticians (as well as crematory operators, “grave diggers,” casket/urn makers, and embalmers) who genuinely care and see their role as part of the sacred work and art that their predecessors have done for the bereaved for millennia. I hope anyone who had a family member cremated by this company, got some form of compensation for their additional loss and suffering!! 😢

Doesn’t the body have to be alive to keep the organs going? But if they just sold the organs to medical schools I guess it doesn’t matter since the organs weren’t going to be put into bodies to preserve life. This story is very disturbing
