Greg, we love you buddy. But not many of us are here to see some viciously-overpriced pre-built dangled tantalizingly in front of us. We're here to figure out how to optimize our limited budgets (sometimes VERY limited budgets) and keep those rigs running their best. I recently upgraded from an old I5 2400-based system to a Ryzen 5 2600-based system I built myself (in part from things I learned on your channel) and it felt like I just traded in my old Atari for a Supercomputer. These insanely expensive pre-builts exist only for people with more money than brains.

Greg seems a little out of the loop on RAM... he also complained about it only being 2 sticks, most Intel memory controllers don't do very well with 4 stick DDR5 configurations, so this is the best config for performance. For the whole two dimms thing, not only does it allow for upgrades, but only running two puts less load on the memory controller which could allow faster speeds. I think one of the biggest advantages of a prebuilt system is the warranty and support. Sure, you get that with individual parts but then that generally means you have to fault find to determine what part is faulty. With a prebuilt system it covers the whole PC and a good SI will do their best to diagnose the problem for you. For the markup price that's not always a bad deal.
@Sun6935
@Sun6935 Год назад
Thank you for the content Greg, when you buy a pre-built you also pay for the brand to process all your warranty claims and their customer service. Plus they help you find the specific fault of the system so you don't have to be speaking to each vendor of each part in case something fails. I'd say the extra money of buying a pre-built is great if you want convenience and practicality. But if you are used to troubleshooting and don't care about practicality, convenience and can deal with the whole computer thing, then you may be fine building it yourself and saving some money.

The funny thing about people buying systems as expensive as this one is that many of them won't be playing anything more demanding than GTA5 or Call of Duty. Or in other words, stuff you could play on a $1,000 prebuilt from a few years ago running a Core i5 and a GTX 1660. I'll admit that I fell into that trap a couple of years ago---I built a modern gaming rig, thinking that I was gonna get into some serious gaming....and that never happened. So now I'm playing Sims 4 (a title that will play on integrated graphics) with a Core i7, RTX 2060 (I know, old card) and 32 GB of memory. It's too much, I don't need that

But for this price I don't think someone spending this much money is buying this for just gaming and to be honest for production this machine is definitely lacking. Also fact of the matter is that their cable management and testing/QC will probably be way better than most amateurs'. Of course anybody could do the same in theory, but you need so much practice and time if you aren't already used to it. I wouldn't spend $4k for consumer grade parts but I mean if I made 3x or 5x the money I make now sure why the hell not. Sure building a PC is fun but it's not necessary in my life.

A point on there only being 2 DIMMs populated, it is best to run the system that way. Due to how the PCB traces are designed, running 4 DIMMs reduces the performance of the RAM as they no longer run synchronised and this desync adds a lot of strain to the CPU memory controller as it works to compensate for it. This can also be an issue in getting the system to even boot with anything beyond the lowest JEDEC speeds. Its recommend to stick only 2 stick configs on dual channel boards. Any more or less will hurt performance and/or stability.
@mr.guillotine3766

I think an interesting video to do with this would be to see if you could build a system that either beats it, or at least matches it, for a lot less money. I mean, you could save a ton on fans alone, some on a case, etc..even if you used the same number of fans, you could find ones cheaper that would probably still give you the same temps (or maybe even better) and you could almost certainly get more storage in it. I'd love to see that challenge undertaken.
@GeekProdigyGuy
@GeekProdigyGuy Год назад
Matching is one thing, but beating it in any definitive way is way too hard, for gaming at least. Maybe the RAM choice could be a bit better, but other than that the 13900KS and 4090 are just absolute top of the line right now.
@mr.guillotine3766
@mr.guillotine3766 Год назад
@@GeekProdigyGuy I'd argue that if we're talking about gaming, then the cheaper 7800x3D is the better/faster option so there you could easily improve on it and save money. Now factor in a cheaper case, the dirt cheap options on storage and RAM right now, not using as many or as expensive fans...and you could possibly match or beat it while saving at least a few hundred bucks and the challenge would be to see just how much you could save and at least get close to it.

It was the middle of the pandemic, bitcoin was through the roof in value and bitcoint miners and bots were making picking up a GPU, or most components in general nearly impossible. So I bit the bullet and spent about $2800 on a pre-built PC. It had an RTX 3080, a Ryzen 9 5900X, 16GB of 3600 ram, and for me it was worth every cent. For how hard it was to get components at the time, and with how bad scalping was I probably ended up saving money if I were to build it myself. I eventually got a total of 32 GB of ram, and upgraded the power supply in order to get an RTX 4090 as well.

However, this is an Origin PC we're talking about here and if you view it from a professional context what it offers is an absolute bargain. If I was a dev or an editor or a 3D animation contractor this machine would be perfect. Yes, I would double the RAM and install a 10GB LAN card and have it talk to a hhigh-speedNAS. This machine's performance is definitely treading on some workstation toes.

Ya for $4300 US + tax they could've at least doubled the storage for a total of 4tb. With the price of RAM & storage dipping way down I don't think it would hurt their profit margins much especially when most of these companies get pallets at wholesale cost. They could've also already figured out a solution for that AIO tube hitting the GPU. I know it would've looked janky but put a zip tie or something to hold it away from that fan. Someone that isn't around computers much might turn it on as is & before you know it noise & possible water leak all over that pricey 4090. Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice rig (especially that cable management in the back) but with some tweaking parts & tidying minor things the price would be a little easier to swallow.

@j.p.h.8126 Год назад
@7:45 the specs are not quite correct. The AIO is the Corsair iCUE H150i Elite LCD or the LCD XT. They are more expensive then the CAPELLIX XT wich has no LCD screen. Not to mention those coolers or the case dont come with the QL fans. So you would need to add the price difference of the cooler and 4 more QL fans.

Well, I really like this channel but want to point out that Origin (Corsair) doesn't pay PCPartpicker vendor prices for components so they are making a whole lot more than the $400 plus markup. Newegg and Amazon, for example, already build profit into their pricing, Corsair buys trays of CPUs and they make much of the other stuff. I also hope to see Greg assemble his alternative build especially since I want to see him put an Arctic 360 AND a Zotac Trinity OC 4090 in a 4000D Airflow.

His comparison is more prebuilt vs diy… yes origin is making more than $400 per unit if we exclude wages, but how could we know what they pay to build each part

I don't understand the point of your argument. Do you want Origin/Corsair to drop their price a little lower just because it makes you feel better about them?

Did your DIY price include the fan hub/controllers? Adding those, the OS and the amazing cable management the prebuild price isn't horrible. I'd say it is more like a 10% price difference. Now I'm sure they are getting much better discounts increasing their profit margin. I wouldn't personally spend that much on a PC but it is not a huge price difference which is good for consumers that want a prebuilt with quality parts.

10% to 15% labour on an item of this complexity and quality seems to be a fair proposition. The gross margin considering Origin does not purchase components at retail prices should be at about 25% - 30% (this is a luxury item, not your Ford Fiesta), again not an unfair deal. What is a little bit disappointing is the fact that some of the accessories are prior generation - not using ICUE components is a major miss.

Why would you try to save money when you are building a last-gen top of the range build? I say it because 970 evo are not that good and ddr4??? I swear I always like your choices but I don't think this was the right choice in this case (It´s my opinion)

Love the review but, apples to apples you would need to add 4 more QL fans and the cpu cooler was the elite. Just thought it would be the most fair to make the build identical. keep you the great work!

Another 2 DDR5 sticks would have been a bad idea. The memory controller doesn’t get along with 4 sticks and if they do post, it will be at a lower speed.DDR5 is not quite ready for prime time, just as DDR4 was at its infancy.

Assuming origin is getting a price break on buying in bulk vs a one off consumer purchase, that will widen the gap

7:45 Yeah but many of the parts are Corsair and, as you said, Origin is owned by Corsair so those parts are, maybe not free, but vastly lower than the consumer price.

You're assuming margins are massive for a vast majority of these products. I wouldn't be so sure without proof from within the industry.

And I'm sure original is paying alot less than pc part pickers on parts from bulk ordering discounts. So I'm sure their profit is more then even what you have down at 400 plus dollars.

With this prebuilt, the Corsair tax is in full effect. It's not as bad as the Apple tax but it is there. DDR5 5600mhz CL 40 memory in a PC for that price is insane!

That’s a lot of cheddar. But I mean over the years from 2016 (when I built my first gaming pc, yes I built it myself I hate prebuilt), till now 2023, I’ve spent a LOOOOTTTT of money. But! It’s upgrading and I sell my old parts to help cover costs of new ones. But I have to say, I bought an asus rog strix 4090 and that was 2100 after tax so yeah. Then my 13900k, fans from Corsair, new z790 mobo I mean this shit isn’t cheap. But yes I see that this is the most expensive as you usually deal with cheaper more, down to earth rigs. Good luck haha

You should notice how the Ram is going RGB but everything else is steady colors. This is due to ICue and ArmouryCrate not working together. ICue states it can control those things but it actually only works until you reset the system. You will save money not having the RGB on the GPU and Ram since these scummy companies instead of making a universal application that easily could work want you to keep in their ecosystem.

They went with two sticks of DDR5 not to let you upgrade, it's because most CPUs are incapable of running four DDR5 DIMMs at faster than around DDR5 4000, if they can do it at all.
