I live in Erwin, Tennessee. We had a 100 death anniversary parade for Mary and even have elaphants up all through out the town. What they did to that poor baby is so unfair and cruel, but she is still thought of everyday here and represented the correct way! This baby will never ever be forgotten in erwin

What killed me the most was that she kept looking to Charlie for help. She trusted him, and he betrayed her. Also, big L to the angry mob for taking the animal abuser’s side, instead of the poor animal that defended itself. Red knew full well that he was stabbing a 2 ton animal, and still chose to do it anyway.

betray is a strong word. put youself in his shoes. can u really say his action where black and white? good vs bad? hes was stuck in a moral conundrum. he and his team are finished , if he didnt put her down, and even tho he tried bullets, elephant is too hard to kill. did george betray lenny? even tho putting him down was the best he could do for him? whats to say the mob woulnt have killed the elephant anyway? also how would charlie support the elephant with no money? let it starve to death is better? u gotta think man. but yes the mob is the big L for sure. bunch of loosers calling a wild animal a murderer. like, if shamu kills another trainer at seaworld today, we know damn well the responsibility is on the trainers and seaworld , not the wale.

I am from Erwin! My whole life i have heard this story, my great great grandparents had the paper about it and while a few things are missing this is the most accurate telling of Mary. We now do fundraisers for elephants there are beautifully painted elephant statues in town and they get auctioned off and all the money goes to a sanctuary for them. There is also rumors and stories that they buried her under the tracks but they have never found it. They even say the railroad is haunted and you can hear her trumpeting.

As someone who has worked with elephants and knew this story already I honestly cannot finish it because its just so heartbreaking...just knowing how scared and confused she must have been is excruciatingly painful and makes me so angry. All because she responded to pain and abuse - like most animals would.

I do not believe that Charlie loved Mary at all, because if he did, he wouldn't had used her death as a "grand finale" as part of the show. He only loved how much money Mary was getting him. Also it breaks my heart how much Mary trusted Charlie, the man who raised her. Mary was feeling uneasy and confused on the railway, but she still believed everything was okay because the person she trusted most was comforting her. How she looked over at Charlie when she was in pain and fear, is so heart wrenching because she believed he would save her and comfort her again. This one was so hard to listen to, rest in peace Mary.

Maybe it's just me, but to betray and use my animal friend who I raised up as a source of entertainment and hope to save my company's reputation, I just don't think I would have the heart to do that. In the least, I would had just put Mary to eternal sleep instead of this slow and painful death.

I’ve actually lived in Erwin TN for a little over 5 years now. It still looks almost exactly like the photos shown in this video, and people still talk about this moment in history. It was probably the first thing someone said to me when I moved here. Now knowing the full story, it makes it even sadder than it already was to me.

This story literally broke my heart. The most heart breaking part is the bond she had with Charlie and looking at him crying for help. Elephants are such intelligent, loving, and loyal creatures unless they're provoked, hurt, or protecting their young so it shouldn't be that shocking that she attacked someone who hurt her. This is the first story (I’ve been watching/listening since 2020) that I couldn’t finish. It hurt so much. I had to run to the end even though I knew what happened, I was hoping Charlie got what he deserved and that Mary was given justice. But sadly no. The way I wept listening to this…Mary was defending herself. They can’t expect the animal to be okay with being stabbed like that. I believe he truly loved that elephant but in the end he had a whole circus to feed, train and pay. A lot of people were depending on him. A lot of other animals as well. I bet he was incredibly heartbroken hence why he died so early. It must’ve torn him up inside beyond recognition. I feel for the man and I’m glad animals are banned from circuses in Australia and many other places these days but considering how badly a lot of circus animals were treated, Sparks circus at least seemed to love and care for their animals. The townspeople yelling "murderer!" at an elephant was the most ridiculous part. If you can ascribe enough agency to an animal to convict it of a murder, then you never had a right to kidnap and enslave it in the first place.

This is the first time I’ve ever cried at one of Mr. Ballen’s stories. I couldn’t even make it to the end. Knowing how intelligent elephants are, and the fact that they mourn their dead; the other elephants were probably traumatized by Mary’s death too. Humans ruin everything they touch, honestly.

Elephants are absolutely amazing. They have empathy. They visit their dead. They are affectionate toward us and remember specific people. They of course have their own elephant relationships. They are intelligent and curious. And in their own way they are beautiful. This is heinous. That wonderful creature was snuffed out due to mankind's abject ignorance.

Two small details I've found out about this story. 1. Mary actually had an abscessed tooth that her handler had poked with that stick causing her a lot of pain. 2. During Mary's hanging, the first chain actually broke causing Mary to fall and break her hip and a second chain was put around her neck. Unbelievable story. Poor Mary for having to suffer animal cruelty.

I would have told them I had to put her down, I'd even make a show of leading her away with a shot gun, shot it in the air, but i would have secretly had an elephant sized cabin for her to stay in temporarily so they wouldn't see i was lying. And then wait at least a week then brought her back and given her the name Marigold or something close.

I've never advertised myself to be a huge animal lover, but I had to cut this video short after the mental picture of 'Mary swaying to the music and trumpeting a few times'. That just made me so sad. Poor Mary didn't even know she did anything wrong.

That's why they're generally not, these days. I know several countries have banned animal circus acts outright, in Australia for example, only common animals like dogs are part of the show and they're audited regularly. A lot of connected street performers avoid Silver's Grand Magic Circus because they have animals in their show, as well, meaning even though it's one of the largest, it has a shortage of talent.

I mean.. It's really not as cut and dry as "protecting" and "defended themselves", she was jabbed once, possibly other things throughout the day. Which, I have a huge soft spot for all animals and can't stand the abuse of them, I absolutely still condemn these acts, but they don't equate to murdering a man. On the other hand, we're talking about an animal and trying to hold it to our standards as human beings. I could have gone my whole life without learning of this horrific story. Now I’ll never forget it. Mary wasn’t even capable of understanding what she did was wrong. An angry, inexperienced and violent person should never have been entrusted to handle her. Sparks is the one who put her in a situation where she was forced to defend herself. He should have been the one held accountable for the handlers death. And the fact the man she trusted, the man who raised her could orchestrate such a brutal & cruel way to kill her was just heartbreaking. I was sort of excited to hear a story about Kingsport since I live in Erwin-- but then I heard Mary and my heart broke all over again. Her history is prominent in our town. Every year we have elephant statues painted and auctioned off in her memory and the proceeds go to an elephant sanctuary. May she rest in peace. She truly deserved better.

I've volunteered at zoos, and talked to keepers and heard behind-the-scenes stories for years. Elephants are EXTREMELY sensitive, intelligent animals, and I have no doubts animal behavior research has only scratched the surface of just how intelligent and sensitive they are. They're truly impressive, awe-inspiring creatures that deserve all our respect. Red definitely had self-esteem issues, and having dealt with them (and still dealing with them) myself, I know *exactly* how it feels to have a crowd around you and to be feeling like you're being judged for failing to accomplish a task, and becoming more and more uncomfortable and feeling more and more under pressure to do what you were told to do. Giving in to the anxiety and perception of people judging you (or, if people have said something, knowledge you're being judged) rarely leads to a good/positive outcome. Poor Mary... They're also a VERY dangerous animal to work with because of their size and strength. Fatalities aren't uncommon, and there's an ongoing debate over if keepers should be allowed contact with elephants or not because of the danger.

Look up the AC/DC battles between Nikolas Tesla and Thomas Edison. They were fighting over whether AC or DC power would become the national standard. Edison would publically electrocute elephants using AC to show how dangerous it was and push his DC solution.

If it's any justice at all, Charlie had tons of guilt for what he did, and rightfully so. What he did to Mary was like murdering his own child. I'll bet it haunted him for the rest of his life.

Whew, out of all the true crime, strange, dark and mysterious videos that I have watched, this was the first one where I actually considered not finishing it. It's absolutely abhorrent what that so called person did to her just for monetary gain. Especially being a Vet Tech, I believe any cruelty to animals renders you no longer human. 💔

I agree! I was tempted to end it early or fast forward through that part once I could tell Mary’s fate. Mary was sick of being abused by Red. I wish they had known why Mary had killed Red. Maybe they did, but I’m not sure if that would’ve changed anything either unfortunately. This was one of the saddest, most infuriating stories, I 100% agree with you. John tells these stories so well and respectfully. Even this one, as awful as it was. Also, I think it’s AWESOME your a vet tech! I looked into doing that myself at one point since I’ve always loved animals but every vet tech I spoke with said it’s a very physically demanding job. Your holding down or wrestling with big dogs to get their shots (I forgot what else they’d told me!)!and I have a bad back so I ended up following a different career path and thankfully I love it! Thanks for treating animals the way they deserve. Take care!

This story left me in extreme shock and horror. The way you described Charles and Mary’s relationship as if it was akin to a father/daughter dynamic made this story all the more heartbreaking. This was the last thing I thought was going to happen to Mary

I wouldn’t have guessed either :( Up until the part where she was chained through the last show, I thought maybe he would just rename her and give her a “new identity.” Once I heard that, though, I knew he was going to publicly end her in some way. I hope Mary is in a place now where all she knows is love and happiness, and doesn’t even remember that final betrayal anymore.

With all due respect, he is an awesome storyteller but in MY HUMBLE OPINION this story and those that are similar to it only make people sick. Nothing came out of this story other than making me sick to my stomach. What can I say, I love animals immensely and hold them to be SACRED.

I have never been so torn up by one of your videos. This is one of the most heartbreaking stories I've ever heard. That poor, poor elephant. Humans aren't the only beings capable of cruelty. Cruelty comes with intelligence. Dolphins have been known to be extremely cruel. I've seen videos of them torturing and killing baby porpoises knocking them around like beach balls back and forth. In at least one case the force from them hitting the baby porpoise up into the air was enough to shatter its spine.

This is truly heartbreaking, I've recently come across mrballens story telling and binged watched so many videos and even though I think I've come used to how people can be cruel and damn right evil in this world, this one really did effect me 😢, poor Mary didn't deserve that life or ending to it, I'm so glad they don't use animals in circus' no more. They did not go into the real reason they did it which was basically racism... It was an African elephant which was the largest in the world, Emphasis on the word "African" and that it actually killed a white man The crowd literally looked at the elephant as a "negro elephant" and surmised if it continued to live it would continue to kill white people THATS Why they actually hung the damn elephant.
