Let me just say that it was an absolute pleasure to talk with Pioneering Collector & Dealer Pat Quinn. I had over an hour long conversation with him and it was mind-blowing to hear the stories of his adventures across the country and across the world! As Pat mentioned in this interview, (paraphrasing) "I could write a book on my experiences and there would still be a lot left over."
His impact in the hobby is truly felt and is shared amongst his peers and friends that helped him along the way. In this interview, you will hear about his many trips to Venezuela, his friendships with big time ballplayers and his historical timeline of being a full time dealer!
Please enjoy and be sure to let me know in the comments

Once we got going, he was an open book. You can hear it in his voice how much joy he has for the hobby. I believe it entirely when he said that those days were some of his best times in the hobby.

This is hands down my favorite episode I have listed to on the RU-vid platform. Pat talking for over an hour and sharing his stories on the hobby was truly mind-blowing. From the endless 1 dollar 51 Bowman Mantles, to his trips Venezuela and discovering cards no one knew existed. Seeing a Koufax Retirado! His personal relationships and interactions with Ted Williams, Joe Dimaggio and Jim Browne I found fascinating. To cap it all off a signed 33 Goudey set sans Lajoie which he got a few days later! It is crazy how the hobby. landscape has changed as it relates to stratospheric card prices and much more restricted access to your favorite players creating more distance between players and collectors. Such a great episode that every vintage collector needs to watch. Really well done!!.

Thank you so much. I was not sure how the interview was going to go because this was originally going to be a video based interview. However, I don't think Pat wanted to be on camera or didn't really know how to set it all up. It was decided to be a phone interview, but I think a lot of the initial questions resurfaced a lot of memories for him that he probably has not talked about in years. Once the questions were put out there, he took off and ran with it. I mean, I guess I can give myself credit for asking good questions, but it's really Pat who led the way. He called me about a few days after the video published and I was nervous what his reaction was going to be. He was thrilled, so I felt relieved.

@@SammyThunder From listening to the interview I got the same sense that the memories seemed to flood back to him and that took him to different places as he relived these experiences in his life. Such an fascinating person who has such a unique place within the hobby. A true pioneer and someone who saw potential in something that others perceived as useless junk, he knew was special. That takes a deep insight and understanding of the hobby (supply/demand, markets). I am so glad he was happy with the interview and I hope he knows how others within the hobby received it. A very important episode, one which holds true significance as it will serve as an archive of his place in hobby history,

Sammy, so cool that you managed to set this interview up! This is the best interview on RU-vid I’ve listened to in a long time! I actually enjoyed the autograph stories more than the Venny stories, which is surprising for me. Bravo and thank you to Pat for taking time out to do this!

Enjoyed the interview very much. I was introduced to Venezuelan cards by John Rumierz at the Fort Washington Show back in the mid 90's. His entire table was filled with them!! There wasn't a card I asked for he didn't have. Grateful to have purchased many (some of which remain in my PC).

That has to be one of the best interviews in hobby history. I didn't know Pat Quinn knew John Ramirez? John is another guy you really need to talk too. He's been at every single National since 1980 and has been in the hobby since 1965. He's got an ebay store and I snagged a ton of 1930 Pabst Blue Ribbon White Sox & Cubs off him which he hasn't gotten since! A really great guy to talk too. Dan McKie, Gar Miller, Bob Thing and Mike Aronstein are still around too, but this is a side of the hobby which you may want to interview now while they're still around. It would be great to get them on record for posterity.

That is very kind of you to say. I know a lot of these guys are still around and I'll have to do my research to learn their history as well. Pat Quinn was able to tell story after story with such ease that it was best to let him go with it. I made sure to keep us on a path from his beginning in collecting to today, but man, he was a great guest!

Thank you Orlando. I've read up on a lot of articles from the past that explained what card shows were like back in the late 60s and early 70s. To get an opportunity to talk about it with Pat was incredible. A lot of it has to do with Pat's ability to put you there. Very great use of time!

Sammy, this interview was fascinating. You handled it extremely well. What a treat for all of us who listened to it. Do you know the name of his business that he went by. I think I remember seeing ads in SCD from LaGrange? Also do you think that many of the Venezuelan cards that we see for sale today might be from some of his buying trips?
@SammyThunder
@SammyThunder 3 месяца назад
I believe it was the Sports Collectors Store. I would say that a lot of what we see are definitely either from him.
