Love the trains. Your comments about not being afraid of messing up the Yellowstone underscore my reticence to get big “nice” engines that may end up as shelf queens.
I happened to inherit the MTH version of the Yellowstone with multiple sets of DMIR ore cars from my grandfather when he passed. Its probably one of my favorite sets just due to the sheer size of the Yellowstone. Amazing video as always! Keep it up with the great work!
You should post some pics and videos. Aiming to unveil my utube, Stof's train yard October 30,21 and perhaps you can post some pics and video in its comments. RBP has inspired me with his great work.
I’ve been in the cab of both of these kinds of engines! The Yellowstone at the Lake Superior Railway Museum in Duluth is even attached to a mechanism that makes the wheels move!
I’ve yet to see a Yellowstone in person, but I also have been in the cab of a Big Boy. I visited 4014 several times when it was on display in Pomona, CA. Of course standing next to a Big Boy, you can see the massive proportions. However, those proportions don’t really get put into perspective until you go into the cab. Seeing the enormous stoker screw and seeing just how insanely large the firebox is on a Big Boy was an experience.
I really like everything you do in your videos! Most of all, you embody the very best of our hobby, The look on your face when you talk about your trains is exactly what I feel every time I turn on my layout!! Thanks!!!!!
I wanted to get out there and catch 4014 this year myself. Oh well! I’ve never heard of this engine! I feel like a noob. Been in the hobby for decades haha (well, the three I’ve been alive) EDIT: It truly does sound haunting.
3rd rail steam engines are great! Personally I own one of their models of 3751 that was released in 1998, even came with a little book on the restoration and history of the real engine. They pop up on ebay somewhat frequently and can be easily converted to TMCC/Railsounds 5. Hope you enjoy your Yellowstone, looks amazing.
I love the siderod action on the Yellowstone. Looks like the small lubricator linkages move and seem to pump oil all over to the oiling points on the locomotive just like in real life.
i cant think of anything i would rather hear than the sound of a lonesome steam whistle going through the woods, and that old familiar choo choo sound of the mighty drive wheels!
Beautiful engine. Once you start buying brass it’s hard to go back! The detail is unmatched and some brass engines can be found 2nd hand for great prices
3:46 If 4014 was sentient and could actually speak, and hear you, Chris, this is probably how he would respond: 4014: "Ho ho ho, oh Chris. I would love to come to the east coast! Fingers crossed, or uh... crossheads crossed in my terms, that special trackage rights are given to me visit towns connected by other fellow railroads!" Loved that comment from you Chris, and amazing model of the Yellowstone too! Let's hope your channel keeps on-a chugging for a long, LONG time to come!
When the 4014 came to Duluth the two were parked about 100 feet apart at the Depot museum. Too bad they couldn't drag the Yellowstone out for a side by side. It's tied down pretty well for the moving display. The neighboring GN N3 was no slouch either in ore service. At least what the Yellowstones hauled was made into tanks.
My Grandpa was an Engineer for the DM&IR , he could vividly talk at length at the subtle differences between the Mallets . My Uncle and Cousin both volunteer at the Museum in Duluth now .
Nice Video. Its tough to compare the sound sets. The 3rd rail is the same sounds set from the first release of the EM1 over 20 years ago... The Big Boy in Legacy just blows it away.
I have many Sunset and Sunset/3rd locomotives, steam and diesel, all in 2 rail. Most 3 railers have no knowledge of the company.. They have been a well respected scale model company for MANY decades, now under 2nd generation family ownership. The same outfit also operates Golden Gate Depot, for passenger cars.
These are magnificent! You really need some iron ore cars for the Yellowstone. I live in northern MN and have seen the Yellowstones on Duluth and Two Harbors. And my grandpa used to work for the DM&IR. In fact, I think I have a shovel or two stamped with those letters.
As a Minnesotan, I have been able to see the Yellowstone in-person. The thing is quite impressive. Of course, I could not help that you avoided saying Duluth and Missabe. They are pronounced as "duh-LOOTH" and "miss-AH-bee," if you were worried about flubbing them.
Thank you for helping with the pronunciation. That is exactly why I did not mention the full name! As an East Coast guy I was worried about mispronunciation. Thanks for watching!
When you said, "so, I put a bunch of tanks, on the back of the Yelllowstone...", I was thinking tanks [cars] and not tanks [weaponry]. Thanks for posting!
Yes ,I would be afraid of it .I like my old lionel trains.Ihave some modern scale items but I have broken parts just from handling them.Real nice video.
It's not 4014, but go to Cumberland MD to see 1309, a Baldwin C&O 2-6-6-2. It's finishing its trial runs and will be running the POLAR EXPRESS starting in Dec 2021.
Not a UP guy. My favorite roads to model CP, CN, NYC. Like the story & history of the DMIR. The yellow stone engines are massive indeed! Besides 3rd. rail Mth also made this engine. Yes kid gloves when handling brass engines. They are very delicate, especially the small parts. Is the yellow stone still available from both ?
Chris whata awesome loco love those gigantic engines a cool display on your layout amazing very inspiring for me to build another layout your passion for trains and the models just a breath of fresh air keep up these cool vids thanks for sharing
I was able to see the 8-4-4 No.X4014 Big boy locomotives in Denver, wasn’t there long cause of how crowded it was but I was able to hear it’s whistle in person, twice and omg what a experience! But I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite locomotives but it was fun to see! Im still trying to figure out my favorite locomotives.
Hi chris.... Have an idea. Create a separate line for the TRIPLEX!!. HAVE IT WAITING FOR THE pulling train. Once cargo train passes the triplex. Triplex positions itself behind cargo train. Pushes it up a windy hill along the wall. Once up. Triplex takes a separate line back to its position at the bottom of hill. Would that be awesome? I have it all figured....
Dang 272 comments. Probably already said but the part in between the tender and cab is a vestibule, which was necessary in very cold environments such as the frozen tundras of Canada and Minnesota.
The strange thing about that Yellowstone is that it’s whistle is a hooter. Now idk if any of them actually had hooters, but most of them had a Hancock 3 Chime, similar to what the Big Boy’s and Challengers had. Nice locomotive tho. I really love those brass models, would love to get a brass model in HO some day. :D
You are spot on about the whistle. When 3rd Rail made this engine, they used a TMCC sound board with the N&W hooter whistle. When I upgraded the boards, I opted for the Hooter whistle again to stay true to the 3rd Rail production even though it is not prototypical of the real thing. Figure it helps to hold the value of the model. Thanks for watching!
The sound system and whistle of the big boy will always be the best it's big bad and are bold and nothing can beat the UP big boy like from what I said from the video of the prr s1.
So I just cast your video to my tv and tan the sound through the surround system…..OMG it sound so fracken great!! It sounded like they were outside my house. Sorry just geeking out
The folks at "Bob's Country Store", normally just biding time, playin' checkers, and talking about how much rain each of the area farmers received, are wondering, "what in blue blazes is goin' on out there?"
I’ve seen 2 of the 3 existing Yellowstone’s. One is in Two Harbors Mn and another is in a train museum in Duluth Mn. None of them will probably ever steam again.
Well my brother and I each got one (slot of money) but they do pull extremely well. Though I'm still a skeptic of MTH as I'm not impressed by their quality at all. Their split in half trucks on some boxcars I got from them has solidified I won't ever buy that again. But right now we're enjoying the engines.
There is one small detail linel missed on big boy there's I believe a red box with a key like shape (the end you hold) with a bike chain around it then tha bike chain connects to somthing
Sadly I don't think the rails in any of the states past Illinois would hold 4014s weight that is most likely why it turned round in Illinois. I was fortunate enough to have encountered 4 soon to be 5 out of the 8 big boys. I saw 4004, 4014 in restoration and operational, 4023, and 4006. I am going to go see 4017 in November. Out of all of the big boys my favorite two are 4014 and 4023
Does Yellowstone locomotive do any smoke effects I would love to see it on camera cause I know the big boy Union pacific has lots of smoke effects PS if you’re looking for passenger cars to pull behind a yellow stone a nice silver passenger car looks great behind it Trust me✌️👏👏😎
When I was a kid that museum was mostly outdoors (they didn't have the buildings yet). My brothers & I crawled all over the locomotives when dad took us there & 4017 was amazing.
I just discovered your channel and I love your content! Keep up the great work. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get that Katy shirt? I really like it and I’d like to have one myself.
Was the real Yellowstone equipped with a tender booster? Baldwin built them with super power. You have some sweet engines there. Makes me dislike my ho scale stuff, but I don't have the space for it
