Goddamn you're a genius and have some serious love for the game. In spite of the category naming nonsense, you've gotta consider that with some of the tricks you pulled off, you definitely helped inspire some of the crazy shit that goes on in more modern kaizo levels and helped reignite old passion and drive in the hearts of many to get back into playing this childhood classic. Much respect.

Honestly I think this video is a very good case for why people should care more about keeping a record of things. Even apart from the whole 'purposefully deleting runs' thing kinda screwing with the ability to make that section of the video (which honestly ended up also overshadowing his rival's records in the video), so much of the jimsfriend era of stuff could have easily been lost but because it wasn't, we got a whole story out of it. I'm not saying "they werent pogyo's runs to delete" because as much as I am a 'preserve the history' advocate everyone has their own reasons and beliefs but I am saying "don't be petty about something that really doesn't matter". I'm not gonna get in your way if you feel you need to delete your runs for some reason, but just please don't be extremely petty and pull a stunt because you didn't get your way, it doesn't make you look good.
Pogyo cared so much about the name of a category, he made me think we should just not care about any records he may have held until he puts his pants back on.
Wow, great vid! So comprehensive and love the effort you put into highlighting the specific strats used to beat records. Also, to prevent further destruction of the leaderboards.. It should require moderator approval to delete / private a Top 10 run (top 10 @ the time it was posted). Posting a run should be basically tied with signing a "contract" that you approve this run to be seen by the public, and promise to keep it there forever, for archival purposes.
You know, I could at least understand people getting upset if it was something like the old any% and 0 exit and complaining over who was technically any%. But with this category the fact that small only (which is the best description of what the category is) caused such a stir is astonishing.. Its funny how most people once they get a little bit of power they throw tantrums over the littlest things when they cant excersize that control over people. I mean 0 exit makes more sense to be called lowest% than small only. Because lowest% implies that a lower completion level no matter the time would trump a faster run with an additional exit. You've got to love the Internet..
Small Only makes more sense to me. Low% sounds like it would fit for a low score challenge. But I would not really care if it was named something else. Thank you friend.

Fire doc as always, and excellent work reassembling the timeline and making it easy to follow. Learning more about SMW history is always a good Saturday night. It also makes me feel old when the terrible sound version of Snes9x was considered the good emulator over ZSNES in my day.

It's very funny that you mention how someone born on October 1st, 2005 would almost be an adult by now, as I was actually born on July 25th 2006, a day that seems very important to this category and the community. Very in-depth and easy to understand video, it is good to know about this category's history!
Pogyo is a great example of how you have to understand the full history of someone to know who they are, rather than just going off of their positive achievements. Achievements alone, you’d think he is an impressive and hardworking person. And that’s probably true. However, you wouldn’t know they are incredibly petty and immature until you learn the history of the Small Only/Low%/Low% (Small Only) category naming drama.

It's really not important, but I dont see this as a true low%. Imo (seriously opinion and no authority on the subject) if this was an actual low% run, anyone who would use less items and enemies (of course without powerups and lowest amount of exits) to beat the game should have the record, even if it's slower, since they interacted with less tools/treasures provided by the game and in spirit would have a lower %. So if I spent the next 48 hours doing a run, but use 1 less item somehow, I would have the new record with 48 hours by typical low% rules. It's close to how games with actual % completion do it, if you pick up less items in your inv it counts as a lower % even if the game save file doesnt count the item toward %. Like in the Zelda runs! Picking up rupees count toward the category completion rules, less is better, but they dont affect your save file % at all. so yea coins should count toward items too in my made up bs. I only bring this up because low% is kinda specific, but I dont see them keeping track of that sort of thing in this run; they use and ignore items depending on strats and finish time is the only thing that determines the record, so low% just doesnt describe what's going on. I would call it smol% hehe (super mario, only little)
Good points! In fact I would say that, since exits cleared is the most important stat tracked by the game, 0 Exit is way more like a Low% run than this one is.
Low% is a dumb name for a category. The point of naming a category is to give a brief overview of the goal/restrictions, thats literally all its supposed to do.
I sincerely think that if someone wants to delete their footages and names from the leaderboard, their record should also be scrapped, since there is not video footage anymore. Even more so for such petiness.

While what Pogyo did is unbelievably petty and frustrating, it's very good that he seems to have grown up and got a hold of himself over those five years.
What's wild is yours was the most respectable and straight forward opinion. The mods can't agree on what to call the category? Throw it to a community vote. Granted, you'll have bickering over what names go to vote, but there's easy systems to use for that.
Was it an in-game timer vs real time debate, or what other timing concerns are there with that game? I watched some dk94 runs last year and was very impressed by the level of tricks and techniques used in it.
@@friendofjim It was timimg calculation that had to do with the American Super GameBoy which had a CPU that ran faster than the GameBoy, GameBoy Color and Super GameBoy 2.
@@iwersonsch5131It is just barely faster with the cape powerup, because you also grab a shell and Mario swims faster while holding an item. No cape categories it is slower to go in the pipe.

Is using baby Yoshi in star world 2 a powerup? The run is small only. By that definition, small Mario sitting on Yoshi is still small Mario. Why is sitting on Yoshi not allowed but holding a baby Yoshi allowed when both are being done by small Mario. If you consider using Yoshi of any kind to "power" up Mario to be able to do things he can not do on his own, then why allow baby Yoshi as that allows Mario to move faster in the water. So this run is tough to name. Calling it small only, means both Yoshis (normal and baby) are allowed as the only qualifier is small Mario. However if you call this a no powerup run, then it's up to the community to define what a powerup is. Of cause items that directly changer Mario's state (Shroom, Flower, Feather and Star) are all banned. But what about Yoshi and baby Yoshi? Neither directly change Mario's state but both allow Mario to do things he otherwise could not do without them. The community calling both or neither powerups makes sense, as the community makes the rules for each challenge run. The issue however, is when one of the two (Yoshi or baby Yoshi) is considered a powerup by the community but the other is not. If you consider baby Yoshi to be like a shell that's fine but then you have the ability to eat enemies. Not at all useful in the run but it is a thing you technically could do. What does every one think about this? Also as an aside, in a no powerup run, stars are banned but in a small only run stars are allowed. For the obvious reason, stars do not change Mario's size but they are a temporary powerup. So Sorster's definition (I assume this is the community's definition) of a no powerup run is a little off. It should be a "no permanent powerup" run. Assuming permanent is defined as until hit by an enemy, dying or collecting the opposing stage 2 powerup (flower vs feather). A complicated run to define in the run name, so the community just got lazy and called in "small Mario" and defined what that means in the run rules. As it's not obviously clear what all the run restrictions are in the run name itself.
@@MizunoKetsuban You can also eat enemies with baby Yoshi. Not sure if the 5th one counts if you never hop on the fully grown Yoshi. The facts are baby Yoshi is a grey area unlike shells which are not and allowed. The community has decided to allow baby Yoshi.
Getting to the end of the video, I'm trying to think of small only moves she hasn't really talked about that migjt make the run more optimized AND THEN SHE MENTIONS WALL JUMPS AND I FORGOT THEY WERE A THING IN THIS GAME! I be dumb sometimes. 😂
