He actually started writing the song when his friend and country singer Keith Whitley died of alcohol poisoning. That's where the line "You were no stranger to the rain" comes from. Keith had a song titled I'm No Stranger to the Rain. But Vince finished the original song when his brother passed. And I think there's been another verse added since then.
I was on the honor guard in Ft. Lewis in 73&74 doing the 21 gun salute and folding the flag and giving it to the families. I had to reenlist to get the hell out of there and get back to my original MOS. Now I have PTSD at 70. The military screws you up in so many ways.

I can not count the amount of times I have watched this video and listened to their cover and I cry every time. They capture the emotion of every song they sing no matter if it is heartfelt like this or funny like Workin For A Livin. They are true masters at their craft.

Vince Gill's original version is terrific, although Home Free did it justice. If you want a stunning tribute to friendship, check out Vince and Patty Loveless singing it at George Jones' funeral. He had been a mentor to both of them and Vince kept choking up during the song. Patty watched him and when he couldn't finish a line, she filled in. It was an example of their love for George Jones and for their love and support of each other at a very sad time. If you'd like to hear a patriotic song from Home Free, their cover of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" featuring Lee Greenwood (who still sounds great) and singers from the Air Force band. I love that the line "from the lakes of Minnesota" is sing by Rob - who is from Minnesota, and "across the plains of Texas" is sung by Tim - who is from Texas. Nice attention to detail.
