Yeah for sure, the thing is some of these simple big principles are the hardest thing to discover in a way they seem obvious once you know them but they really aren’t so easy to figure out
This is one of the GREATEST free guard passing principles videos ever made. PLEASE don’t take it down. You need to write a book on principles. I’m drilling with my sons… 10 and 13.
2 weeks into my bjj journey and this channel has become my go-to after class. I always come back and watch videos on the positions I struggled in that day. Thanks for all this info Jon !
This is *such* a good video. I might only be a 3-stripe white belt, but from now until forever, whenever the technique of the day is a pass (or a guard/escape), that technique will be filtered through this lens that you've just opened my eyes to. 🤙
Hello master! White belt with a few stripes here. Thanks for the content first of all :) As a suggestion I would tell you that maybe in your videos you could include a breakdown - every now and then - of systems/principles from either IBJJF fights or even from your students sparring, highlighting the application or lack of application of these concepts. Spending just a few minutes after class with my instructors asking "what did I do wrong there?" is priceless because of the wisdom they share, so consider this: in BJJ the majority of practitioners is white/blue: show them (me) what goes wrong during our sparring and then a top-notch application of what should be done instead from IBJJF tournaments.
FOR GUARD PLAYER : 1. knee elbow connection : for the guard player : do not extend your arm FOR GUARD PASSER : 2. hips facing the wrong direction = their limbs are facing the wrong direction *FOR BOTH* : 3. feet between my chest and his chest = recompose (even if his hips are facing the wrong direction) ; many different ways to put my chest between my chest and theirs--> FOR GUARD PASSER : make it your nº1 priority to control their feets -- FOR GUARD PASSER : 4. chest to chest connection = he can not put his foot between our chests 5. variation : hip to chest connection (for ex, knee cut)
… as a new white belt, learning these principles is a godsend. I feel like in my gym at least, we just get chucked into the middle of what in other martial arts are already intermediate level classes (showing technique, drills, then sparring), skipping these key basics entirely and being expected to learn through harsh experience alone.
Thank you for these principles. I'm enjoying this format. What are your thoughts on ecological dynamics coaching applied to submission grappling (e.g. constrainst led approach, "games" vs drilling, etc)?
Great stuff as usual. I have had issues with my position being off/too low or over, especially finishing over/under or double under passing and getting reverse with a triceps push. Id love to hear more principles on finishing passes to prevent easily losing a position. Thanks for all of your content!
As a purple belt with primarily open guard game this is sick for those times I'm on top. You're right about the grips at the end, we'd like to know more, for example, sleeve grip and kick off the pant leg is a killer and often what I fight for, lose that and you lose the position, any ideas on how to stop them getting it back?
Usually I get a takedown on the opponent, or we start sitting and I take him to the back. In eigher case my opponent gets time to grap my sleeves and I end up between his legs. I can get one of his legs to the ground the other one I try to put in knee shield position, but then proceeding is kind of awkward. Removing a sleeve grip would require both hands, freeing one leg and he could regrip, but I need to circle around the knee shield, stepping over the pinned leg I'd get to half guard, but with insane chest distance. Help would be helpfull😂
Yeah principles like this are so powerful when you can find them, not always so easy to really figure these out though despite how obvious they seem when you learn them.
I loved this video. Many a tad long for my attention span but I managed 😂 This is basically my style of guard passing but loads of details I will pay attention to in the future because there is a lot of room for improvement. I struggle with very flexible guard players. So plenty to take away here as regards them trying to get the foot back in. I will be applying this stuff tomorrow & see how I get on. Thanks for the great content!
Happy to hear it buddy! Yeah on retrospect I should have made it two or three video series or condensed it. Gonna be a bit more concise on the next one
So much good material thx! The one I’m going to try is the step back around their knee shield. I’ve been stuck behind some strong knee shields and I think this will help.
Passing like this has never been an issue for me, my issue is either not being far enough back to where they have a collar grip or a grip on my lapel and i start to play their game. I know she wasn’t trying but if this video had an active bottom player where the hands are also involved I think that would help a lot
Really great in depth instructional, thank you. The way you work from broad principles to more specific situations makes complete sense and fill the gaps other videos leave open. Great stuff!
Professor Jon your passing principles are truly the core of guard passing! It’s easy to remember the principles vs passing technics because the process of passing has too many variables that are difficult to predict , but the principles allow you to stay ahead of many technical transformations. When you add both technical skills and practical principles they complement each other! I ‘m definitely going to add the principles to my game! Thank you for sharing and pushing Jujitsu to the next level! Coach AL
Awesome mini-instructional. I didn’t mind paying for the ones you sell because your youtube channel has 100 times more free content of the same quality. Thanks!
Man so happy to hear it from someone just now seeing my content. Hope you like some of the older videos as well. Check out my mount video, it’s one of my favorites
Great video! Lucas Lepri visited our gym in April (FF in Milwaukee), and he covered this principle some. This did an excellent job expanding on that further and in a few other passing situations then he covered.
This was great, thank you. I've been sticking my foot in front of people's chest for years and thought it was just a late (desperate) guard pass defense for me. Glad to see other folks do this haha. I will definitely be teaching your passing principles too!
I watch you at half speed mate, it’s a real treat, I can absorb everything and it’s like watching Trevor on GTA when he’s had a few. You should try it 😄 (superb vids)
@@JonThomasBJJ Thank you Jon, your videos are my Bible. I wish you more no-gi content but I understand if that isn't as big a focus for you. I also prefer the gi
