I use 4 sections: Negative Thoughts, Fears, Positive Thoughts, and Excited For. It’s a jumping off point to grt thoughts out of head without using full sentences. Get to the real stuff asap. I also grabbed The Burn After Reading prompt cards to add extra spice ro my thoughts

I wish I started doing this when I was 14. I'm 34 now and two months into Journaling, what a game changer! 🤯 My thoughts don't occupy my day and night anymore. I don't explode or wander off. 🙏

I journal to mirror my thoughts, creating a space where I can untangle them and gain clarity. This practice is incredibly beneficial, especially when I'm dealing with external challenges. It's like writing a letter to a higher source and receiving answers through the process of reflecting on my own thoughts.

This is the best video I have seen on journaling. I started journaling 18 months ago and have spoken to several of my friends and family members about it. Most of them say the same thing.... I don't know where to start. The one sentence a day journal is a great suggestion. So many salient points in this video.

I have now been journalling for a year consistently and WOW the effect it has had on my life is incredible. I put it off for so long because people “told me to do it” and that always makes me more resistant 😅 For anyone interested, just dabble at your own pace and in your own style. Might just change your life xx

Bit of a radical position maybe: Don't try to make it a habit. Don't stick to a certain predefined system. Get a book and whenever you're pondering some ideas, just write down while you do it. Same thing if you reflect on something. When you try to make something a habit, you make it feel obligatory, which then makes it harder to stick to it. Journaling doesn't really need that. Just do it when you feel like it and you'll realize that you'll want to do it more and more and overtime you'll find your own mode. Leaving the development of that habit to just happen completley organically worked really well for me.

I lead a team, and I promote this idea every day. Focus on the journey, not the destination. The process should be enjoyable, and once you start to see your progress, you get more motivated. Focus on being more active, not achieving some exact weight. Focus on practicing for 10 minutes a day not on learning a new song/language/skill. Focus on staying on task, not reaching some percentage on your work stats/work goals. Focus on writing one thought, not completing your memoirs.

Unfortunately, my carpal tunnel, arthritis, and Dupuytren's Contractures make it impossible to write on paper without a lot of pain. So I use speech to text on my laptop and have the option to print and put in to a binder if I want. But I do long for the old days when I could carry around a notebook and write in it whenever a significant thought came into mind. It was very comforting.

I love having Asperger's! The beauty of it is that the ego attachments of the average human that cause the problems that require journaling to sort through simply are not applicable to me. Society was never able to force me into its traumatic behavior patterns. I am free. It is beautiful. I wish more people could experience the liberation from trauma that is Asperger's. ❤

I taught writing for a decade or so. Three days a week the students would come into class and write in their journals. The only requirement was to write something and write for 10 minutes (by hand). One thing I learned is that journaling works for about 50% of students. I would always try to predict who it would work for, meaning which students enjoyed it and seemed to benefit from it. What I found is that there was no way to predict who the technique was most effective with. Invaribly many students I thought would like it didn't and many students took to it though I didn't think they would. If I were teaching again I would requre students to journal and would experiment with them doing it every day.

Something I really want to know is what do stoics do about their negative feelings? We're always told to focus on what you control but feelings aren't really fully in our control. When stoics are faced with disappointment, resentment, grief, and other normal human feelings, do they just bottle it all up? Dismiss them like they're meaningless?
@4thqtrphil
@4thqtrphil 10 месяцев назад
Accept them and let them pass. They come and go just like positive feeling. Also look to see if your feelings stem from things you can't control. If you do let them go. If they don't take appropriate action to change what you can and that may help you rid yourself of those negative feelings

Depends on if you want to read the stoics themselves, or if you want the information synthesized by an author like Holiday. The first reply is a good one to start with you want to go hard core. The Daily Stoic is a way to take some stoicism a day at a time. There is also an accompanying journal.

Though I’m new at this I just don’t agree with #3. Poorly managed information be it a book or a hard disk is at risk regardless. So what is the genuine value of the media used for journaling? I understand people find pen and paper comforting. I strongly dislike using pen and paper, it’s slow and inefficient, it’s FAR more prone to destruction than data. One fire, everything is gone forever, dropped in water, chances are unreadable at best, lose it, well obvious. I am likely unusual as I have a digital copy of every email, document, audio/video files dating back as early as 1989. I literally produced an email in a court room as evidence that was used to determine outcome 23 years after it was originally sent. So I would really prefer bypassing the clinging to tools that have largely expired their usefulness like cursive writing. Is digital journaling acceptable?

There is a warning to this. Journaling can work for some people but if you suffer depression it could make things worse especially if you ruminate. The only thing it did for me was put all the things I hated about life onto a paper that I could now read over and over again. It was actually terrible for my mental health. Be careful with this tool.

A little over a week ago I stumbled on a random AI narrated video on stoicism. Something about the topic intrigued me and made me want to learn more. I found a reading list and got the audio version of the first book by Massimo Pigluicci. I'm still working my way through it, but it has given me a lot to think about. Within the last week, I have come to learn that journalling has been a great tool for focusing my thoughts. My brain is hectic, with my thoughts racing all over the place with no direction. When I start writing, it's like all of those directionless thoughts are channeled from my brain, through my pen, and onto the paper. I don't know what I'm going to write when I start. It just flows, and at the end, a thought I had trouble structuring in my head is formed on the page. It helps solidify my understanding of the topic at hand each time and helps clear my head of the frantic thoughts. It's only been a week, but already I have seen improvements.
