I wonder how long it took people to see the connection between inbreeding and malformations 🤔

I believe it was something commoners knew for quite a while because they could observe it in livestock. But because royalty was obsessed with keeping bloodlines pure and not marrying anyone /beneath/ them in social status, they really risked it all to inbreed themselves to death.
@whatsanenigma
@whatsanenigma 10 месяцев назад
@@jungtothehuimangI think it was also that they thought their blood was special and less likely to cause incest issues. At least at first.
@jungtothehuimang
@jungtothehuimang 10 месяцев назад
@@whatsanenigma yeah I believe I heard that somewhere too, they believed their blood was blessed by God(s) and even when the signs of inbreeding started showing they said it was the work of curses or witches 😭 thank God commone folk didn't practice this as often or else our species would be so messed up now

First of all this is a great video! I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the Thai royal families. They frequently had cousin marriages and had sometimes concubines who were their half-sisters and children with them. Even the current king of Thailand was married and had a child with a first cousin. Maybe this would be an idea for another video though.

I feel like you could have mentioned the Khitan Liao in the medieval period, they famously restricted the marriage of their ruler to only two vassal clans which resulted in cousin marriages across generations until they eventually fell.

Just an observation. Because power was so personal, the inbreeding was also a practical way of consolidating actual power, whatever the rhetoric about "blood purity" was used. Until power became disassociated from familial relations, this was a practical necessity to maintain power and wealth. And they used religious and rhetorical reasons as underpinning for what was in actuality realpolitik.

"Royal and noble dynasties seem to do it the most." (paraphrased). There is also the chance they are just the most recorded, who knows how many small villages in the middle of nowhere led to inbreeding that were just lost to time.

The Ancient Chinese families didn’t die out from inbreeding. Emperors had harems full of noble women. The primary wife may be a first cousin, but the heir could come from any of these concubines. The dynasties never died out. They were always overthrown.

Hemophilia is a sex linked condition on the X chromosome, Because Queen Victoria was a carrier and passed it on to most of her daughters and granddaughter is how it spread through out the royal families in Europe. It is not a result of imbreeding. If the daughters also had hemophilia then it would be more likely due to inbreeding since a daughter would have to get it from both parents.

I think that humans started out with inbreeding. It's not like 10 non-related humans popped out of nowhere to mate. Although we will probably never know scientifically. In bible it's adam then eve made from him then, cain and abel both guys. Then WHAM more humans pop outta nowhere so they had options 😂

Lol one of the first gods in Greek mythology was Gaia and she had children all on her own. Her own son, the sky God forced himself on her and shoved their ugly inbred children back inside of her. She created a weapon and gave it to her son cronos, he cut off his fathers junk and threw it into the sea, from it aphrodite was born. This son of a mother and son married his sister and they hand many kids but fearing his kids would kill him he ate them. His sister/wife was deeply upset at seeing her husband/brother eat all her kids so she gave birth in a secret place and wrapped a rock in a blanket and gave zeus to her sisters to raise. He came back and fed his father poison, cronos threw up his older kids, zeus siblings and they instantly began a war. Titans vs Olympians. After the war zeus married a titan goddess but while she was pregnant learned she'd give birth to twins that'd over throw him. He turned her into water and drank her. The pregnant titan transferred the baby and athena came out of zeus skull. Next zeus forced himself on his older sister Demeter, giving birth to Persephone and then forced his older sister hera into Marriage with him. They had aries God of War. War because hera was not wanting to marry zeus. Hades, zeus brother saw Persephone and wanted her and asked , zeus for her. Classic zeus first forced himself on his daughter Persephone before handing her over to hades. Persephone mother, and zeus sister went into a rage. She killed all living things on the earth creating the first winter. Zeus admitted to giving Persephone to hades and they demanded her return. The myths get worst but yes, lots of incest on Greek mythology. Lots of rape and lots of unfairness. Literally, athena challenged a human woman to a weaving competition and when athena lost she transformed this poor human into a hideous monster known as the mother of spiders. Zeus brother forced himself on Medusa, a gorgeous woman that wanted to serve athena and when she cried athena took her rage out on Medusa and transformed her into a monster as punishment for her getting raped by a God in her temple. This led greeks to blame women for when they got raped and charge them with adultery and so women (they saw 12 years old as women) that got raped was put to death. It's insane how many sins the greeks did because it was in their gods creation.
