Being a Canadian company it would be nice if you'd sell your products in Canadian dollars. Not sure why, but I find that a huge turn-off. I bet a lot of your customers are in the US, but it feels like you don't want local sales.

The design for this is so simple and intuitive I'm surprised it took you this long to make it ;-) Seriously. It's everything I like about a tepee tent with non of the disadvantages of a tepee tent. Every review of this (and the Sierra Designs version) have nothing to say but good things :-)

Couple of small points. 1) the material is silicone polyester not silicone nylon. This is important because the poly doesn't absorb water or stretch when wet. 2) If you put in a stake by the small panel at the door one hand opening isn't a problem.

The detachable inner is money in the rain. Pack up everything dry inside the fly and throw the fly on the outside of your pack. Also zippers are way easier when the vestibule fully staked out.
@sgriffin8739
@sgriffin8739 Год назад
You can basically do that with any tent i.e. pack the tent and fly last. It's the ease of setting up in the rain that makes this nice.
@smellybearc7411
@smellybearc7411 9 месяцев назад
@@sgriffin8739I think he’s talking about the inner tent. Many trekking pole tents are single wall tents. But with this tent, you can pack up the inner first so that it’s dry the next time you take it out. And like you said, it’s awesome that you can set up the fly first when it rains and quickly too.

I own a Durston 2pxmid. Not only is the tent awesome, but I have emailed Dan Durston with questions and he, Dan Durston responded with honest, informative advice regarding my needs and his products. The addition of reflective lines was an excellent change. That said, the reflective lines upgrade is proof that he listens to his audience. I can't wait for a hopeful future backpack that accommodates a smaller person size with enough space for equipment (ie to alow a 500bv to sit inside with other equipment and ability to handle up to 40lbs).

I keep the inner bug net separate from the tarp fly. This allows for easy set up in the rain, keeping the inner dry. The tent also packs much smaller in separate compression bags that fit really nicely in my pack. Because the fly can be staked really close to the ground, the tent becomes a really decent 4 season tent in my area of the country (south) reducing drafts. My only con is that the tent requires a pretty broad space to set up in, very similar to what a larger two person tent would need. I can live with it. I would give the tent a 10 out of 10. It is an impressive, high quality, tent at a really good price point. Thanks for your review, it helps to reinforce my opinion of it as well.

Dan, just want to preface my comments by saying how much I really enjoy your channel......keep up the great work! Now, regarding this review.........what rock have you been living under?!?!?! I am sure you have pressure from manufacturers to review those well funded companies, but this tent is by far the best tent I have ever used! I bought the original season X-Mid 1P that Dan Durston had built by DROP. Now I was successful in ordering the new X-Mid Pro 2P tent......and am anxiously awaiting delivery!! For two+ years I have used the 1P tent........easiest setup, as you emphasized.........bomb-proof wind resistant and bomb-proof rain resistant! I do feel it is narrow for me.....but the HUGE vestibules make a major difference. With this tent, more than all my previous tents, I keep the doors open as weather allows and I just love it!!!! With the Sil-Poly design, the sag from water exposure is not an issue compared to most of all my previous tents. SOOOO freaking excited to get the 2P version with the Pro (Dynema) tent that will be delivered later this summer. Great tent, great price, great performance!!.........again, IF you can be patient to get it.

I landed on the durston line a while back. I'll be getting the x-mid 2 soon. since I'm a side sleeper and a roller, I feel as if I threw out a knee to one side I'd be pushing the mesh to the ground, and in worst case scenarios, ripping mesh, or getting wet.. Plus the extra floor space would be nice, to keep a little extra gear inside the inner tent( or incase I ever want to bring someone). But they are most definitely always out of stock lol. Only because they are well on the way to being one of the top tents out there. They came up with an ultralight version with a dynema outter shell, and the inner tent is connected in a few points, making it a semi- double walled tent. But actually shedding a decent amount of weight (that's saying something since this tent is already light as a feather for its size, and capability.

Really depends on your preferences and priorities. The area under the fly is big enough to sleep 2 people, so you’ve already got a 2P for winter trips or hiding out for an hour or two from a storm where you don’t need the bug protection of the inner. And personally the wide open sightlines from those big vestibules mean I never feel trapped even inside the inner. I have the 2P as well, but it’s just way more space than I need for a single person trip given that the 1P’s inner is already big enough for a luxury (30” wide, 4” thick) sleeping pad.

It checked a lot of boxes. I was worried about the small inner but the at 5’7” I still have room and the two large vestibules give me more than enough room. Finally got to use it in the backcountry a few weeks ago and was very happy with it so far. After over-researching tents for the past two years, I’m happy with my choice. Reasonably priced too.

got one of these for my 2021 pct thru hike (the original 1P). I switched it out halfway through for the GG One. While the quality of the tent is great and held up amazing in strong winds, I personally hated how massive the footprint was compared to the inner tent. From the looks of it, they have fixed some issues i had with the tent in the newer model, but double walled trekking pole tents are just not roomy enough inside for my taste. The two huge vestibules were a waste of footprint to me. I get that it is utilizing the space, but I prefer a smaller footprint with only one vestibule. Chances are if you are using this tent, you are a lightweight or ultralight backpacker, like me, and simply don't even carry enough gear to fill up both vestibules lol. The GG weighed less, had a smaller footprint, and a very roomy interior (i could sit up without my shoulders touching the netting!). X-Mid is a great tent, but just not comfortable for me.
@durstongear
@durstongear 2 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. With the v2 of the X-Mid 1 (launched a few months ago) the inner is now a lot more spacious (+30%) while keeping the footprint the same. It is heavier than the GG One because it’s also more durable (eg #5 zippers, 20D fabrics) and more protective (eg. double wall, peak vents, full coverage fly) but the GG One is a nice tent and can be a good way to save weight in friendlier conditions.

I went for the Xmid1 mesh. Used it in the Dolomites last year. To anyone with analysis paralysis regarding which tent and which version to buy: 1. Go with 1-Person if youre a solo hiker. I think the footprint of the 2p will be unpractical and it will catch more wind (remember: the 1p and 2p have the same level of support and the same 2 trekking poles, but wind forces will be greater on the 2p due to its size) 2. I pondered at the solid vs mesh issue quite a bit. I went with mesh, thinking it would give a roomier feel to the tent and making it more versatile in warmer weather. And it allows for the stargazers add on. I slept in dry weather around freezing temps and was never cold. Zero condensation. I can see how it could be drafty in storms, but there will be ways around that. 3. Its up in a minute. Its really idiot proof, especially if you leave the inner attached to the outer when packing. 4. Yes you can camp in the mountains with this. Enough places at altitude that still have a bit of mid/grass/stones and if really barren then use some stones. No need to go with a freestanding tent. 5. It looks great. Overall a very good deal for a lightweight double walled high quality tent. Roomy and no condensation issues. You wont regret it. Dave

I have the XMID 2P (had it for over a little over a year) and I LOVE IT! The only issues I found with it were 1) the stakes provided with the tent are a bit flimsy so I replaced them and 2) the stake down loops are too small for my replacement stakes. I used some thin, reflective, red paracord and attached new loops to the smaller ones. Bonus - this made all the loops much easier to locate for faster setup. There is a bit of tweaking required with pole height and staking to make sure the fly doesn't touch the mesh (during rain or for condensation), but it is easy once you use it a few times. Great in the rain and wind. I can't praise this tent enough.

@blop507 2 года назад
I agree with you! I had the stakes pop out before. But to be fair it rained for a week beforehand and there were winds of roughly 50mph. Put some msr groundhogs in there and you're bomber. I also tied some 2mm cordage for larger loops for use with sand/ snow stakes. I will say, use some kind of ground sheet with it. I had a small twig or something poke me the first time I set it up in my yard. Other than that. What more could you want?

Tried the 2p (my preferred) again sold out in minutes. I was able to score on the 2p pro but it will be another couple of months before they ship. Been using a Zpacks duplex since I like the extra room. Picked up an Xmid1-Solid also but have yet to put it to the test. What I like about the Durston design is that unlike the Zpacks duplex, the trekking pole location on the Durston is offset so it doesn't get in the way of the tent opening.

It's not nylon, it's polyester so it is not going to sag in the rain. With a peg stake in the short side of the door flap the zipper will be able to unzip with one hand after you use it a bit. You would be hard pressed to find a double walled non-DCF tent that weighs less than this tent especially when you take into account the weight of the stakes needed to setup this tent compared to one of its competitors (since it only needs 4 compared to around 8 for others).

I almost had a trip this summer where we were going to have a 'basecamp' and daily go out on day hikes. My question is what to do in late summers where there are often thunder showers in the late afternoon? If I take my poles out and go for a hike and it rains while I'm gone, the rain will puddle on the surface and may even leak inside getting everything WET! (Danger!!!) Can you share ideas on how to deal with this issue? Thank you for your videos which have helped me develope skills and confidence! Katy Dockter

I've been considering this tent (or the 2 person version) for a couple of years. The main design 'fault' that has kept me from getting one (or at least trying to) is that the mesh on the inner tent goes all the way down to the bathtub floor. This is fine for grassy mountain or forest camping, but I do much of my backpacking in the desert Southwest, as well as during shoulder season at high elevation, where snow is a good possibility. This sort of design, when combined with wind, will fill this tent, your gear, and you, with sand, dust, or fine snow that will blow under that fly and go right through that mesh. I'd love it if they made a solid fabric part of the lower wall for at least a foot above the bathtub, before going to mesh higher up.
@Clifford_C

I believe the next batch of XMids are going to have a solid inner. I have the 2p and live in the Southwest too. I would prefer the solid inner over the mesh for reasons you mentioned.

Great video, as always (watched the whole thing like you asked. LOL). I so wanted to try this tent! I ended up with a 1P free-standing tent though. Living in Colorado with most of my camping in the mountains, many times it's really hard to get stakes in the ground due to...well, the Rocky Mts. I was nervous about getting something like this that relies on a solid stake out to make it work well. I was also concerned with the size of the footprint...kind of along the lines of the stake concern. Seems like you have to have the perfect spot for it. Am I wrong, did I miss an opportunity?? Welcome the input.
@chipkormas2840

Search RU-vid for a video on easy set up. You stake out one of the short ends, go to the other short end and fold the corners upwards and put them together. Let the bottom of the middle sag down, grab it and set the point on the ground. Pull that middle section taught to each of the staked ends and holding it down unfold the corners and stake them down. Perfect 90 degree corners and a setup without sag. Works everytime and far easier to do than to explain.

I Just returned from a week long canoe trip. We moved every day. The X-Mid 1p performed very well - with only one frustrating difficulty. The thingy-doos used to fasten up doors in the screen and rain fly were an exasperating pain. About 1/3 of the problems were caused by the tiny “tension barrels”. Some smaller person might have the kind of small, nimble fingers that are handy for either picking a safe, or manipulating these little loops and toggles. I had to wrestle with them over and over. I thought it was fastened, only to see it come apart when I let go. (This difficulty resulted in the invention of two, new expletives that can be used in similar situations.). The other problem with these thingy-doos is the homogenous color of ALL of the strings. The fastener for the rain fly door lives right adjacent to the fastener for the screen door. The strings, in the quiet of the night, conspire to hunker down together. If one set were the black & silver, as they are now, and the neighboring fastener were, say, red and silver - they can be visually separated quite readily. (Though I didn’t invent any new expletives over this confusion, I did recall a couple that had lain forgotten!) This is the best two-wall tent that I have ever used. And, I quit single wall tents several years ago. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I bought mine from Drop (v1) two years ago. It took me through the entire JMT through some harsh winds and some rainier days. Super easy setup and light weight. Only took at most 3 minutes to set up each night. I do prefer to have the trekking poles not in the upside down orientation since the poles can dig into the ground for more stability, and I do not need to wipe down the trekking pole handles in the morning if it were upside down.

I also have a treking pole tent that relies on an upside down pole, which I do not like. So I filled s pilot hole in the top of the pole handle and added a short screw off the proper diameter: problem solved, my pole stays upright and the tip anchors to the ground.
