The MOST INFAMOUS Set In COMEDY HISTORY

Hey everyone, today's video is on the infamous 1997 Iowa Show that Norm Macdonald did along with fellow Saturday Night Live Cast members Jim Breuer and Darrell Hammond. This set has been talked about by so many different comedians such as Tom Segura, Theo Von, Joe Rogan, Artie Lange, and so many more and it is often seen as a hilarious and legendary moment of comedy history. Iowa certainly wasn't happy about it in the moment, but the world of comedy is a much funnier place with this iconic moment. I hadn't seen anyone do a deep dive on Norm Macdonald's Iowa Set, so I wanted to make a video talking about it and I hope you guys loved it. If you enjoy this comedy lore enough please like the video, subscribe to the channel, turn on post notifications, and share this with someone you think would enjoy it. Thanks for watching, I love you guys.

Something I learned not too long ago about Norm was that he actually first got cancer (stomach cancer I believe) when he was a very young man in the 80s, so he would have only been in his 20s (before he was even on SNL.) Apparently he came very close to dying before it finally went into remission and I’ve heard some who knew him back then theorize they believe much of Norm’s humor and fearless attitude came from his early run-in with mortality. I imagine you gain a lot of perspective on what truly matters in and about life once it’s almost prematurely ripped away from you. I assume shielding children from a few dirty jokes they don’t even understand was not high atop Norm’s priority list. However, once Norm saw how high it was on everyone’s priority list in Iowa, he knew what had to be done…

I’d never heard that. Fascinating story, but makes total sense. I’m not like Norm McDonald, but I also survived cancer at a relatively young age, and it made me fearless about many things I previously worried about. I can vouch for the fact that facing your own mortality will absolutely change you. I’d be totally different today if I’d never had cancer. Thanks for sharing.

Agree, and I think that’s a trait all of the greatest stand up comedians share. They say what they think is true, and what they think is funny; they do it in their own way; and they don’t change, compromise, or censor themselves to please anyone, or to avoid offending anyone. I don’t think you can be a great comedian without that kind of bravery. They care that what they’re saying is funny, true, and not mean spirited or intentionally hurtful (i.e., the purpose of the joke isn’t to hurt someone) - but those seem to be their only filters. They dgaf if some people dislike the joke or feel offended by it. Norm didn’t care if everyone else hated a joke, or hated his entire set, as long as he thought it was funny - as as this set in Iowa demonstrated. Other greats who share that bravery with Norm and Patrice would include: Carlin, Pryor, Chappelle, Gervais, Bill Hicks, Bill Burr. Bill Burr’s legendary rant in Philly is high on the list of most infamous comedy sets of all time.

My wife and I visited Vegas with some friends a few years ago and I suggested we see Norm MacDonald. My wife and our friends are more inclined for family type entertainment and like the Iowa crowd, thought Norm's show would be fairly mainstream and readily agreed. About 2/3 of the show was relatively clean and we were having a great time. Then he suddenly changes course and starts telling the filthiest gay jokes. Everyone at the table was becoming more and more uncomfortable while I'm torn between laughing hysterically and dealing with upset companions. Several people started to leave and when about 1/3 of the audience was gone my wife drug me out of the show in disgust. She was disgusted with Norm, I was disgusted to miss the end of the show. To make it funnier I was wearing a Norm Macdonald t-shirt with his big grinning head on the front so everyone was reminded of Norm the rest of the evening. I loved Norm, miss his brave type comedy. Great video, thanks for reminding me of that hilarious night in Vegas.

Norm was such a legend. So many people didn't "get" his comedy because they only looked at it at face value. I feel a kind of regret for those people because they really missed out on some incredible creativity and subversuveness that we haven't really seen done in the same way by anyone else. Norm was something else. He only ever wanted to have fun with comedy-and I'm sure he would probably hate to hear someone say this-but his idea of fun and comedy would often cross into a kind of art. As an Iowan, it’s unfortunate this whole thing happened. Especially since it seems to have been a situation where communication wasn’t good and how Norm went out with the idea the audience would just be adults and not have kids, which it obviously had. The fact that Norm wasn’t told that it was supposed to be a family show really shows how communication failed and that someone should have mentioned to him before he went on that it’s all for families. It’s definitely an interesting piece of history in comedy as well as to the state of Iowa to an extent. Thanks for the video man, hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!

I think it was shitty of him to do x-rated comedy in front of little kids. I like the irony of it, but I think that crosses a line. You can tease adults with that, but don’t mess with kids’ developing brains. They can’t unhear that.
@BrunoEwok

I love the idea of pissing off adults, like some of his various interviews from Hell. Or reading kids jokes at a roast.But I'm not so keen on telling filthy jokes to kids. He's deservedly an absolute legend; this just doesn't seem like one of his brightest ideas. It's like, hey, those kids are real.
