Glass mask is by far my all time favorite manga. It means so much to me and I can’t describe with words how I feel about it. I’m glad that it is getting more recognition.
Its really only obscure in countries where the Manga never released there. In Japan, there are exhibitions when it comes to Glass Mask, even plays based off the ones in the Manga.
YES omg glass mask does not get enough credit istg.... hands down one of my all time favorite anime series!!! and i do prefer the look of the manga/1984 series compared to the 2005 anime
The 1984 series Glass no Kamen was purchased by Telecino/Gestevision (Spain) from its italian counterpart so the version purchased to be broadcasted would be the italian master. Due to a strike of dubbing actors in the 90s in Spain, the show was sent to Etcétera Group in Venezuela for its dubbing (Latin American Spanish & Spain Spanish dubs are too different regarding accent & vocabulary but understandable between each other). Strangely, the series was never broadcasted in Spain but in Venezuela! Actually this italian version based-dub is lost, there's no recordings on the internet.
I love Glass Mask. Was surprised to learn from a Vietnamese co-worker that the series is popular in Vietnam. I can't bring myself to watch the other adaption beyond the 1980s tv series because the melodrama and music is part of what makes it an amazing package.
Thanks for the review. I love, love Glass Mask and have seen the 2005 version, which I love and the old OVA, which was ok. I would have to find the 80s series now and watch to compare the differences. I do love the 2005 version and it was a revelation to see how Maya is so consumed by acting that it takes over her, making her acting so scary good. And the voice actor for Masami just made him so hot. I hope the manga artist finish this story.
This Chanel is the perfect encapsulation of my love/hate relationship with ye olde shojo. Like I know it’s stupid & terrible & problematic as HELL, but something about it just warms my heart. You’re basically like my inner monologue when I watch Inuyasha. 10/10
Hi, just passing by. I was very lucky to came across your channel (pass by your Cherry coco post on Twitter) , you're giving us great content about the staples of shoujo which is sadly not as highlighted as it should. Not only that, your research and overall fun presentation deserves respect Its infuriating that you don't have a broader audience, I hope not having as much people watching wont prevent you from keeping up with your videos ! I'm planning to get into more intense old shojo myself, just booted up Attack n1, Ace wo Nerae and Oniisama E
Also, you seem to have a strong european accent Do you understand French by coincidence ? Je ne suis pas sûr d'avoir parfaitement maitrisé la grammaire des engliches !
@@RedAbitbol thanks for the encouragement! I really appreciate it. And my first language is Spanish! (I'm a super beginner but trying to dig up old shojo sometimes means trying to understand Italian and French haha)
i'm sooo happy i've found this video! i've tried watching the 2005 version after finishing the original run of the series (which is the one i watched as a kid too, btw) and it just doesn't have the same appeal to me... surely, the modernized animation must be attractive to many anime-watchers, but it doesn't do the trick for me. imho, the fact that it's set in the 80s adds a crucial element to the story that the directors of the newer run couldn't wrap their heads around -- imagine if a movie like "Fame" had been set in the 2010s... it would've been a completely different story or it would've ended up feeling anachronistic. also- they kind of ruined Ayumi's design? she is *supposed* to look like an aristocratic kid born from royalty, what with her blonde hair and fancy princely get-ups. she isn't realistic, of course, but that wasn't the point in the first place. last thing: the opening. i mean, the two ops for the 2005 version are cute, very shoujo-like and thus fitting in a way, but are they nearly as epic as the original op? sorry but no. the sounds and vibes are perfect for an anime centered around the showbiz -- plus it looks directed like a sequence from "Flashdance"! sorry for the rant!! nothing against the newer run or those who enjoy it, i just feel very strongly about this anime and wanted to share. loved your video a lot, the editing was phenomenal and matched the anime well! thanks for your hard work~
The character designer of 2005 version is the one who did 1999 (OVA) version, in which Ayumi's hair were curly like in the manga. I think they had to find an easier way for the animators to draw, especially with a large number of episodes (51 episodes).
I just wanna say that I finished watching 2005 and I really enjoyed it. But when I tried 1984 afterwards, I stopped after the first episode. Everything is so rushed, that important moments are not there. Suddenly this and that just happens because. Weirdest thing, Maya is what Chigusa was looking for, just because she jumped into the water to grab a ticket. 2005 at least showed Maya acting in the park, which gave Chigusa the impression that Maya is the one, although that was weird as well. The rest of 2005 feels pretty smooth though, but the end is a tad open, so there could have been some room for some more episodes. That being said, 51 episodes sure offer enough room for explanations than just 23 episodes. But 1984 really looks like half measurements to me, so why even trying? The music is catchy though.
Totally loved the video and I'm glad that there is someone in anitube who covers underrepresented 70s shoujo. Though what does hamper my enjoyment of this video a bit is the sound. Its hard to understand what you are saying sometimes and thats not because of your accent but mainly because you seem to mix the music too loudly and the production (or the mic) for the voice track isn't optimal. I'm sure it's a bit easier to understand for native english speakers who have a better ear for the language than I do, but I'm sure that there is room to improve here. Again, I wanna emphasize that I don't have a problem with your accent, in fact I low key love it because I love and study language.
I'm never entirely sure if the music is low enough, but I'll lower the volume more than I usually do next time (my mic... gets the job done, but I really need to upgrade as soon as I can), thanks for the feedback! glad you liked the video 🌟
Wow I'm so HAPPY that I come across this video. Glass Mask means so much to me. It has always been a great source of motivation for me since I was little
Yeah , I could see your point . Maya always being called useless and nothing girl by everyone around in her life until she met Tsukikagi . it's not hard to see why her mind and self-esteem would suffer because of it .
Honestly I think when the manga ends, it will be Maya who wins the Crimson Goddess, she is the main character, but she will say that Ayumi deserves to play the part as well. So both girls win.
You did not give the full picture thou: Harada called Maya "Stage Storm". Harada actually mentioned that to point out that being stage storm was her strength, but simultaneously, also her weakness at the time, which Maya later recognized after playing Elizabeth (a doll). This seemingly oxymoronic weakness of Maya was emphasized when she played Catharine. The stage was called a failure by one of the experts (despite the commercial success), because Maya's young Catherine was not harmonious and emphasized many gaps and contradiction it had with the adult Catharine, hence the stage was said to be 'torn in two'. This 'torn in two' was actually a further tribute to Harada's stage-storm remark where "Maya will cause rift (or indeed, vandalize) in every stages that she attends to" "
Interesting, the full meaning does seem to get a little loss in the translation (i do try to avoid getting too specific with plot details in case people want to check out the show without feeling like they've been too spoiled) thanks for the comment!
@@MarionBea Btw, you should watch the Japanese drama version. To me besides her acting as Vivi, the acting in the Japanese drama triumphs over the anime versions, and some theatrical versions ☺
Another great video! I used to dismiss the 1984 series as "B-grade Dezaki" in that, compared to Dezaki's animes of classic shoujo (2nd half of Rose of Versailles, Oniisama E and his various Aim for the Ace which Glass Mask may most resemble), it feels clumsy and uninspired. Whereas even the 1974 Ace has wonderful art, stylized backgrounds, strong character designs, interesting angles and direction techniques, a lot of Glass Mask in comparison feels routine--the early episodes have boring backgrounds, for example, and only some stylized sequences. Even though its director, Gisaburō Sugii, has done a lot of great work in his own right. So I used to always just wish Dezaki had done it. (All of these works also, aside from--perhaps--Rose of Versailles, have antagonists with huge flowing blonde hair and Western style dresses...) However, I recently bought the DVDs and rewatched it all, and realized it has a lot of its own charms. Also, the art itself gets a *lot* more interesting around the midway point. Dezaki is at the top of anime directors, of course, but Sugii still does a lot more interesting work here than most mid 80s tv anime, and I was surprised how addictive I found the rewatch. I haven't seen all of the 2000s remake (I'd like to watch the second half especially to see where the story goes), but from what I have seen, I think you're completely right. Losing the over the top/stylized quality to try to make everything more realistic also loses a lot of the appeal (and makes moments like her jumping in the lake seem all the more weird). Also, at first glance the art looks more complex and superior, but I actually think visually it's far less interesting (and it's not as well directed). Also, Ayumi isn't a blonde? And REI DOESN'T HAVE GREEN HAIR?? WTF?!? I need to rewatch the 3 1990s OVAs, but I seem to recall them being a happy middle ground between the two
Ahh this was a great recap, I have yet to see the 84 version, it's on my list next. But I will always have a bias towards Ayumi's 2005 voice. Yeah it's not as ojousama as the OVA or 80's version but it's kinda refreshing to see a less pretentious version of her. But I will say all Ayumi's iterations are great and I'll love each one of them. Oops, this was an Ayumi comment. Maya being the perfect bean she is (minus her love interests)
As for shoujo manga that ran longer than Glass Mask, there are comedy works like the crazy Patalliro, also from Hana to Yume which has ran since 1078 and is on 101 volumes. Drama wise, starting in the same year as Mask, 1976, in Princess and still running is the wonderful fantasy Crest of the Royal Family, Ōke no Monshō by Chieko Hosokawa. Still running, it has 66 volumes. Not nearly as famous though there is a live musical and an OVA it’s still the fourth best selling shoujo manga ever (Mask is second)
@@tealee All the Dezaki directed stuff has been fansubed and is easy to find here and elsewhere... There's the first 1974 VERY retro original, the big budget 1980 movie, and then two late 80s OVA series to finish the long running manga (so I think he returned to it even more than he did with Joe) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yvv4nqYDFkY.html
@@tealee Don't worry, I won't quiz you ;) As a Dezaki and shoujo geek I did like seeing how his over the top shoujo style progressed from the 1974 Ace to Rose of Versailled 5 years later, and then of course Dear Brother 12 years later.
The the episode 51 is not the end ? I am happy to heard that because I was little bit disappointed... I hope if it's not the end and that's there will be more episodes in the coming years 😭
I think both girls will win the contest. Ayumi's portrayal will be the beauty and sadness the goddess went through. Maya's portrayal will be about the strength and power of the goddess.
They all have English captions, you can activate them by pressing the cc button (or you can find them under the button that looks like 3 dots if you're on mobile). They are not auto-generated, I add them shortly after releasing a new video.
i‘ve watched the 2005 version, and the last episode was so disappointing :( !SPOILER! i wanted to see maya acting in the scarlet angel, but it was just left as an open ending...
Do you possibly have any sites I could watch it?/ I remember coming across the original and being enraptured by the beginning of how selfless Maya would put life in danger for a theater ticket. I only got to see the beginning and Op before I lost the site I was watching it on and I honestly feel like I would be doing the anime a disservice if I watch the remake before the original. So please if you have anywhere I could watch it please share.
So assuming the manga ever comes back, how afraid should I be about the Sakurakouji and Maya ship getting sunk in favor of Maya and Hayami? Because I already had one ship I liked (KohRin in Inuyasha) also get sunk in favor of a disturbing one (and the fact speaking out against it gets considered a hot take is nothing short of depressing as it is frightening) and I *REALLY* don't want to have to add another series soiled by the possible degenerates who want Maya and Hayami as a couple!
@@chih-hsianglo3979 check out the nyaa torrent site ;) It's interesting as it only covers the same plot as the first TV series, but does so in a very different way...
@@EricMontreal22 yeh, i saw the chinese dub version on a chinese website as i couldnt find the english sub version at the time! So, i have watched it, even if i saw it in a dub version. I do really like the animation style in the OVA. Wish the 2005 version used a similar style. Also, the torrent on nyaa i think has no seeders, which is sad.
@@chih-hsianglo3979 I just downloaded that torrent a week back! I'll put my download back up so maybe you can seed from that lol (It said no seeders for me too but after a few hours it found one and downloaded quickly). Ugh, I really disliked the look of the 2005 series.
