most hellenic kings did the same.. Alexander the great was one of them as well. but we also had some pussies like menelaus that sent guys like Achilles to win his wars!
@@ededd3175 leonidas was a real person so he's correct in what he said. There really was 300 spartans that stood against a massive onslaught of men. Not as dramatic as this movie and they didn't go naked XD they had bronze armor from head to toe and were awesome heavy infantry fighters. Look up the battle of Thermopylae
@@yepepepep590 that was only because of war and sickness. if you made it to a good age after childhood you could live well beyond 50. Humans were just that resilient back then.
@@Jamplays592 true true I always forget about that, the first year when detailed information about life expectancy was available was 1820, it seems as if those who lived to around 20 got to 60 on average, and it’s a decently sharp incline from there, it’s easy to assume the average in his time was much lower, so still all the more impressive
@@yepepepep590 No, that was the average. Many people died at birth or in infancy so the average life expectancy was very low. Many learned and aristocratic people lived to be quite elderly.
I actually meet a father Whose son was given the name Diinekis from the Spartan who said this phrase. When I said him that in our airsoft games he is going to fight in the shadow his face was the happiest and most nostalgic I had ever seen.He almost cried.I could not see throught his sunglasses. He answer me "Yeah I know".Studying history can be really useful
I think one of the coolest parts of this movie is that a few quotes "spartans lay down your weapons" "come and get them" and "our arrows will blot out the sun" "then we will fight in the shade" are actually historically what was said! Which full credit for spartan badassery and I love that they used those lines :)
The world will know.. That free men stood against a tyrant.. That few stood against many.. And before this battle is over that even a god-king can bleed.
@@Eskii_NZL bleed ^^, hence the part where Leonidas throws a spear and cuts his right cheek, making Xerses bleed... letting his people know he is no god.
Our greek flag is composed of nine blue and white horizontal stripes from the nine- syllable phrase (Ε-λευ-θε-ρί-α ή θά-να-τος)which in English means (freedom or death).Inspired by our ancient ancestors!
Shoutout to the Arcadians. They wasnt superhuman warriors like the spartan... but they came, the only ones who came, and they did their part. True men.
Achilles was way before Leonidas lol. And King Aggamemnon was the coward. Other kings like his brother Menalaus of Sparta fought on the front lines, as well as the King of Ithica, Odysseus.
This is hands down the manliest movie ever made!!! This is what current social justice and feminism is trying to get rid of by saying "toxic masculinity". Well i've got news for you: This is the masculinity that saves an entire civilization from being destroyed.
You seem to be confusing "being a hero" with "being a piece of shit". Plus I'd suggest you, and the rest of the incels that liked your comment, to read a few things about Spartan Women. You're in for a surprise.
Look at all of the triggered feminists in this comment thread lol He was talking about the *movie* by the way, to all of the "history buffs" online who watched a 10 minute video about how 300 was factually incorrect and now know all about Sparta 😎
@@landonjones258 What, this movie isn't historically accurate? What's next, you're gonna say Xerxes wasn't a 9-foot-tall hairless fairy? Fucking bullshit!
That phrase is historically accurate, but it was also used by the Spartans as a quote to motivate and inspire their people. The phrase in Greek is "ή τάν ή επί τάς" (e tan e epi tas). With that quote Sparta reminded to their warriors that it is better to be honoured after you have fought until death, rather than retreat and return alive. Another historically accurate phrase is when leonidas said "Come and get them" which in Greek is "μολών λαβέ" (molon lave)
mmm, I think that she really didn't have to say I love you since that would make Leonidas weak since it would make him think about leaving his wife and kid, instead, she thought of everyone else too. With that phrase she let Leonidas know that the freedom of his people depended on his success or his death, and that his effort wasn't gonna be in vain.
Spartans, one of history's most fierce, feared, and powerful warriors. Souls filled with hunger of blood and no mercy with a mind of courage and discipline. These where true warriors, history will never forget, August 480 BC, the battle of Thermopylae.
mohamed abdullah Yes and no. The Mongels were great in what they did, (in terms of skill, of course) but mounted combat and archers are a whole other set of skills, but for spear men, the best ever to live.
So were the Norsemen. The berserker at Stamford bridge will NEVER be forgotten. For Valhalla, for honor, for strength, friendship, family, love. Everyone disregards these men, they were the navy seals of their time. Spartans and the Vikings to me are the greatest warrior races in the world.
Philip sent a message to the Spartans saying “If I invade Lakonia you will be destroyed, never to rise again.” The Spartans replied with one word, “If.” Alexander's father got threatened by the Spartans with one word
@@MasterGhostf well even though that was the case, they taunted a lion who conqured all of asia and half the world, dying in battle was their lifelong goal
@@thesailo602 lmao Alexander never conquered all of asia. He couldn't conquer India, China, Japan mongolia, Vietnam etc he only conquered Egypt, persia turkey, Afghanistan and Pakistan that too for not too long.
As you can imagine not EVERYTHING about this movie is (far from it) correct historically, but most one-liners are, awesome enough. For instance Diokenes actually said "We will fight in the shade then" upon hearing of all the persian bowmen.
It is a romanticized retelling for sure, but it is pretty good nonetheless. If it had shown the Spartan slaves fighting, then the whole message of freedom wouldn't fit in the movie.
I'm 58 and in my life the Spartans are the most proud of FREEDOM group I respect.. about 99% of the words I use on my computers and my phone like "afreegreek' - '300' - 'King Leonidas' and a few more...
most of these quotes were actually pronounced during the actual events, or were at least written as having been pronounced by the Greeks and Spartans. But that's actually something for what Spartans were known for : the Laconic Phrases, basically punchlines as retorts : short, funny, and savy. Here's an example of it from around 360BC between Macedonia (Philippe II, father of Alexander the Great) and Sparta. Philippe II having conquered much of mainland Greece and imposing the other cities into a league under his control, sent an envoy to the remaining uncontrolled greek cities, asking them if they wanted him to come into their cities as friend or foe. The Spartans answered "neither." Losing patience, Philippe sent another letter, saying that "if he invaded Laconia (Sparta's home region), he would rase their city and civilisation to the ground." The Spartans answered " if. " Philippe left Sparta alone for the rest of his life. And you can actually be sure that these lines were truly delivered, since it's been recorded on both sides.
The arrow that was fired is completely fake and has no historical evidence. Although King Darius of Iran launched a military campaign against Greece, which met with resistance in the marathon and was defeated, neither he nor his son Xerxes were present at the battle. But long after, the third Sassanid Shapur avenged this defeat and Alexander's conquests. Also, the clothes in this movie are fake and the clothes of the Persians were not like this. The title of the film is "300: The Rise of an Empire". But which empire? If we mean the "Athenian Empire", it must be said that this empire was formed at least two years after the events that the film focuses on, namely the naval battles of Artemisium and Salamis, both of which took place in 480 BC. But the truth is that it was the Persians who invented the empire word and the Greeks imitated it from the Persians. The Persians were the first and largest empire in history and had the religion of Zoroaster. They did not attack to seize and plunder the resources of each territory, but they sought to establish and spread justice. For the first time, they wrote about human rights, as the charter and inscription of Cyrus on human rights are proof of that .
I just watched a Gerard Butler interview where he said that "This is sparta!" shout was just him experimenting how to act that scene and was like "was it too much?" but the director loved it:D
I don't know how much of 300 is based on historical facts, but it was a kick-ass 🎥 movie and Butler did a great job as a bad-ass King Warrior! Enjoyed it thoroughly!
Im an indian ... After watching this movie we named our college cricket team Spartan and we won inter college Cup for nine consecutive times ... And before every match in team hurdle we used to say ...spartans whats ur profession ...ahu ahu ahu. People used to fear us while playing ...
For some reason I wanted to see 300 again. This saved me the money of renting it on RU-vid. All these scenes satisfied me. Thank you SeNs3NoEviL. May you live forever.
MaximumEffort 33 Yes and no. It’s really far from complete accurate, it’s like a very loose translation of history, but based on real events and twisted a bit. Just a basic idea of Spartans
@@generictoasterstroodle1080 yea ik but I think it pretty good and not to far from it. Yea there are moments that happened differently but it was still not bad
Cersei, always a Queen. To see her irl, you see how tough, foul-mouthed and tattooed she is. But, in movies, she is simply regal. Such a fascinating woman.
I'm jatt sikkh , comes from similar kind of background, my ancestors fought similar kind of battles many time during 15th to 19th centuries. Massive respect for spartans and Greece . You r true heros and protectors of democracy
@Bo Zi lol In this case though It's true Spartans were not 300, they had help from few thousand more soldiers from outside They were also beaten by a women army That's what I'll call pathetic This 300 is nothing compared to battle of saragrahi Where 21 Sikhs faced 10000 Afghans Spartans are just overrated piece of trash
Well, Spartan females. Exercising nude with the equally nude males and subjecting them to scorn when the males do not measure up. That is what Plutarch tells us
"no retreat, no surrender that is Spartan law and by Spartan law we will stand and fight and die" - whenever I lose hope in anything, these lines get me through it.
Remember this day this day will b written in the history for all time... Spartans ready ur breakfast nd eat hearty tonight we dine in hell, what a golden words
Gerry was born for this role. The way he looks at, his growling voice, his masculine animal charisma are making me feel goosebumps all the time. He’s real king! Why Scottish men so hot???
The Holy Bible paints Xerxes in a nice way as well. He was the husband of queen Esther. But unfortunately, too many Westerners including Americans believe Hollywood more than the Holy Bible.
Don't forget that one day half of the world was ruled by the Persian government, and one day, of course, any government will disappear. But the values that existed during the Achaemenid rule are still unique, and this film does not in any way provide a true picture of the Achaemenid rule.
"A *thousand nations* of the Persian Empire _descend upon you!"_ "Our arrows will _blot out the _*_sun!"_* I never forgot that intimidating line, from the first time i heard it in a trailer when i was a kid.
