Many thanks for an excellent video and history lesson. Back in late 1973 I came to Dublin for my first job after leaving school. With a few spare bob in my pocket I was finally able to afford to buy my first bicycle. I distinctly remember one Sunday evening cycling to the city centre on an exploratory tour and ending up beside that sign post for Misery Hill. At the time the general Docklands area was very rundown and dilapidated. I just assumed this was the reason for the name. But, as you explained very well, the history of the name is much older and much more sinister.

Thanks Peter, that was a truly great and well researched piece. There is a lot more to be told of this area. Townsend Street along with having at one time had a pub on every corner had one of Dr. Lock's Lock hospitals. Also, a huge boiler complex which provided steaming hot water for the Wash House and The Driers also heated two swimming pools, one for the men which also had actual baths up on the mezzanine, and a smaller pool for the women. When all of this was eventually cleared away in the early nineteen eighties an archeological dig unearthed a treasure trove of bones, human and animal, and vast quantities of wattle from the origional river banks. This area is so rich in history that a life time of study would only scratch the surface. Mise le meas, Lorcán Ó hÉalaighthe

Thank you, Peter, for this interesting video, combined with warm greetings from Germany. A friend from Dublin brought it to my attention. What was particularly fascinating for me was the story surrounding the pilgrimage to Compostela. I walked the Camino in 2010 and can hardly imagine how difficult it was for a person suffering from leprosy to endure these hardships.

Dear Peter! We had a very interesting walk through the historical past of Dublin. History is mostly sad and painful. Regardless, we have a duty to learn about the events that happened in the past. This part of Dublin has also become wonderfully beautiful. Thanks for the experience as always.

Misery Hill. It's a fine street now but you should have seen it in the 1970's and 1980's. It really lived up to its name then.

Hi Peter, Splendid! through out the film The opening with your selection of the music and the footage of the sign....is that slow-motion?.... The storyteller is an expert..oh it is YOU, Peter..hahah Time-consuming research..taking in each words.. your voice slightly changes tones from time to time whether you noticed or not. Every country carries bitter History in the past...we must not forget. I cannot imagine to see corps(human dead body) left somewhere for public punishment after the death. ahhhhhh not to me...cremation in my will..hahha Great production and more to come, I wish. Thank YOU, Peter for a lot of thoughtful mind into the film. ciao Stay cool....

Hi Ms.Kayak! Thank you as always for joining the premiere. So glad you liked the video. It's not slow motion but I used a DSLR to film to get the narrow depth of field. Haha thank you i'm still learning how to write these stories, it takes me so long to make them. I agree it is important to remember these tales from the past. I can't imagine seeing that sight either! Thanks so much for your kind words of support. Have a good night. Peter.

Fascinating! As a native dubliner, I had a general knowledge of misery hill and gallows hill but was not familiar with some of the specifics mentioned here, so thanks for the interesting tales. No doubt you are aware that the east side of St Stephens green was also , unfortunately, another gruesome location for executions.

I was born around the corner in no 50 Sir John Rogersons Quay. There was a pub, Kelly's, on the corner. We were surrounded by Gas Co workers, dockers, sailors and prostitutes. With that lot you knew where you stood, unlike the pretentious toss pots these days!

Pirates... Would probably be the only option to the peeps of misery area.. the blue light pub.. used to turn on there blue light... Seen by the port... To tell smugglers/ pirates that.. the cops are not around... Come on up... And if the light was " broken" the cops are in it.. and there is old trails up to it.. sly trails.. Yu can flow from windy harbour, dundrum... Alllllll the way along the dodder ? On a lovely sly trail ... Riiight down to the southside docks/ liffey.. tis vonderdfull ! Probably the first leg of a sly trail up a long way to the land of the free... Ballinteer.. and up wards with bails of smuggled tobacco and booze.. Heres one for you.. Ballinteer history.. as far as i suss it... It was a farm... If you look far left of the ludford entrance down from vesley colledge... Yu may find the origional ballinteer farm entrance pillar with the origional ballinteer plack on the pillar... Mmmmm history... So much ignorance and bull shii... That now.. anyone with a bit of intersest returning will become a mindblowing piofknneer of history... Because of all the ignore ance of the subject... Like fekn babel again... Maybe thell mixy us... I mean yuz lol again... I should be grand.. i can hardley spell.. lol ," parl eh vu franca ?? " "Eh duh ! Yu wat ?? " Should get me off the hook... ( Cambodia )

Lol what a voice for history.. perfect... I even half here some words but the get prossesed as if my brain skips by and the words are completle and flowy with short cuts my brain is so familier with... Wonder how a foreigner prosseses it.. yu know if the aint used of southside lingo... People be asking am i from the bronxs... ?? No . The dry side of dublin. The liffey used to run trough... Wat is now... Her royal majesties holy " trinity colledge ". " Air hair lair " " howaya ! " Can see why they shortends name... Yep trinity sank about 4-5 times before the sinking libraries.... Made a foundation ... For the others.... Jeez and thats a education centre... Hope not for construction studies... But ye.. the river ran trough that spot... Had to put those big trees ontop of the boggy graveyard inside the court.. to suck up all the remnance of the dubh linn.. and turn them all into conkers.. not a good place to house the book of kells and the skeliton of the giant... And the other old ass books and shi they got there... If my memories correct they had water disaster in it from the past... Being tick... I stick to the cricket and a pint in the club house... I was nearly housed there as a live in imployee... Right next to the club house... Wuh huh huh huuuu ! But nah fk that..

It might have being science labs rather than libraries that initially sank... A few times.. 4 5.. The sinking buildings are.... Left after the main entrance recepion building to the left.. with stepps up to it.. looks like a yanky corthouse.. yep be fun digging there... But... Who cares... Even if ye did... It dont matter... To them... Yur imployees... ( Site under "christ church" ) n o g a f a y Not one fk.. cluster b dont care bout ye...
