He wasn't allowed legal aid to defend himself as his girlfriend (future wife) had been left an inheritance, which had been specifically left in order for her to buy her first home. What can I say, us brits have an acquired taste when it comes to comedy 😅 I love the pure brutality of Frankie Boyle and how Jimmy Carr tells a dark joke in layers, gradually getting worse. You say the 9/11 jokes aren’t funny, it’s the same level as when they made jokes about the Queen dying. Difference is, we left it a decent amount of time before dropping the jokes, where as jokes about the Queen were going around while she was still on her death bed 🙄

If you say so ShinobiVIPER. In all fairness 9/11 didn’t take almost 100 years. She was a person, not a building full of people. Sure there should've been time for public mourning, and private grieving. I did notice some tasteless jokes about her sleeping with Snoop Dogg after her husband Duke Philip passed. Honestly though… you shouldn’t care about what Americans say about your leaders… because you guys have only had 3-4 rulers in the past 100 years… how many have we had?? The Queen was loved by people all over the world, and not just in the United Kingdom. She accomplished more in her reign than Charles will… or is that too soon?

I always find it interesting that speech seems to be freer in the UK, without a formalised right to freedom of speech, than the US which has built it into their codified constitution. We're also more secular even though the Church and State are literally entwined with the Head of State also being the Head of the Church and the Upper House of the legislature being called "The Right Honourable the Lords Spiritual and Temporal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled." and having Bishops and other spiritual leaders as a specific group of those people who are in it. Yeah I don't know how American comedians do it. They either have the choice of being totally pc and not funny at all or going full on Chapelle and risk the death threats. Uk and Irish comedians have total freedom to say whatever the hell they like with no backlash (almost none, there is always one grumpy granny out there) and are generally much funnier because of it. The thing is because they have such freedom and ppl here are far less sensitive they don't have to overdo it either, but it also means when the Franky Boyles come along they are just totally accepted.

@@NTL578 I didnt say American comedians dont push the boundaries so how about you read my comment again before telling me I am wrong. I said they have a choice of being pc or going full Chapelle and that is the truth of the matter. I love a lot of American comedians. As for these shows being bland now well thats just not true at all. All these shows end up with 2 cuts. One for the early showings and the full cut for the later showings. The full cuts are every bit as bad as the old episodes with the likes of Franky Boyle in them. The one problem these shows DO have today is they have a lot of the newer female comedians in them who are just NOT funny. The shows are being forced to have their "ratio" in order and its ruining things. An all female episode of QI last year had the lowest rating of any episode EVER and even Sandy Toksvig said it was a bad episode. Older female comedians like Gina Yashere used to hold their own with the men no problem but the new ones are just woke cowards afraid to offend anyone. So I suppose your not totally wrong but they are still in no way "bland"
@NTL578
@NTL578 2 года назад
@@ASavageEye Good comment. I agree with some of it. Certainly your assessment of the American comedians. But from what I see here, there are no Chapelle’s willing to get cancelled and they certainly wouldn’t get shown on TV here. Maybe the American Netflix would give them a chance, but I can’t think of any? Maybe Jimmy Carr still? I agree on the female comedian statement I don’t think much more needs to be said on that. When you say there are 2 cuts, I presume you mean that the more offensive one doesn’t get shown and the other one does ? If so I think proves the point really. Just going off the top of my head without forensically examining the video. There is NO WAY, the Mecca joke would be broadcast now, and even the Tim Minchin Kylie joke (which was the only one that wasn’t funny, no set up, no cleverness, just ‘haha she can’t have kids’) would be met with widespread indignation about, ‘What about Caroline Flack’ etc. To be honest, the really just unfunny personal attacks that were a bit more common 20 years ago are the only thing I don’t mind being toned down. Because they were usually just from a place of ‘haha, they’re thick’. Haha they’re a scumbag, that’s working class, compare to us middle class comedians on the panel etc’ My overall point is these typical comments on all these types of British humour videos of ‘Oh yeah, we just don’t care here, you can say what you want. Especially compared to America.’ When I think the reality is, 15 - 20 years ago we could say more than them, but now I think at least they have the Chapelle ‘s etc. Who do we have? American comedians used to come here because they felt more free to perform here, but that is certainly not the case anymore. Social media has changed our culture more than any other country on earth, including the US.
@CrazyInWeston
@CrazyInWeston Год назад
I also agree that female comedians arent funny. I have never laughed at a 'joke' that theyve ever said. I also agree that social media is ruining the freedom of expression that the UK has. One joke made that these weak ppl cant hack and it goes viral by other triggered weak people who feel the need to shout out just cos they cant take a joke. However it is, the Beeb is now just a woke channel, if you want anything done, go to Channel 4 as they put it out there with shows like naked attraction (find a date based by what they look like nude) etc.

The Madeline joke was a reference to a little girl who went missing in Portugal while on holiday while her parents and the other adults in their group were at dinner. It was absolutely HUGE when it happened and every now and then there's a resurgence of "Maddie" headlines and case "breakthroughs" that circulate for a couple of weeks before it dies down. The thing with cancel culture is that we had it back in the 60's/70's led by Mary Whitehouse. She, at one time lived not that far from the town I am from. The local council used to get so many complains from her they got fed up with it, and started to review everything she objected to. And most of the time it was "well it's not that bad, I've seen worse in real live", then let the film or show go on in the town. It end up with people coming from all over the place to watch or rent films, because they could not see them else where. In the end she moved. But in the end, the majority of people got fed up with her and what she stood for and just ignored it, so you could say that cancel culture, got canceled in the UK 40 years ago. We learnt that if we do not like something, we turn it off or just don't watch it.

Jimmy has too big a following who appreciate JOKES to be cancelled. Most people understand their is a difference between joking about something and actually doing it. The great George Carlin said "I believe you can joke about anything. It all depends on how you construct the joke. What the exaggeration is. What the exaggeration is. Because every joke needs one exaggeration. Every joke needs one thing to be way out of proportion." Even as you kinda reference Chappelle, He wasn't cancelled, his special is still on Netflix, and sure some snowflakes got bent out of shape, my opinion on that is if you are struggling for equality then learn how to take a joke, nothing makes you more equal than being treated the same as any other person, you shouldn't have to censor yourself on stage because you might offend someone's sexual identity, or race, or gender. F those people, don't buy a ticket or watch the show. The irony is the ones offended were happy to watch thinking Dave is going to make jokes about people of colour, but as soon as it turns to them, cancel the dude!

The joke about "looking after Madeline McCanne" is a story that was well publicised in Europe, because the McCanne parents left their 2 year old daughter (Madeline) in a crib on her own during the night, so that they could go out with mates for a few drinks/food etc. When the parents returned later that night, they discovered that Madeline had been kidnapped but a lot of people reckon that she was killed by the parents and the kidnapping story was the best way to cover up the murder.

There was another little girl called Shannon Matthews and (spoiler alert) her mother faked her disappearance inorder to scam money from the public and also tried to get some of the Madeleine McCann fund. Eventually she was found by police in a drawer under her mother's boyfriends bed and both were arrested. Frankie's take on this was: "I see they found that wee lassie Shannon Matthews. Incidentally the last joke in that compilation nearly did get Frankie "cancelled". There was something of a media firestorm after the tabloids jumped on it and (iirc) Frankie was fired from being a panelist on Mock the Week (the show you asked about) by the BBC because of it. He was almost banned from all UK TV for a while, despite being one of the most grounded and level headed blokes out there when he's not in comedy mode

Also Jordan (aka Katie Price) and Peter Andre sued him, and Channel 4 (the channel that broadcast the show) Tramadol Nights, he also got sued by British Olympic Swimmer Rebecca Adlington for the joke he made about her on the same show. Subsequently the show Tramadol Nights was axed but not because of the controversy but because it was one of the fewest watched series in Channel 4 history. Frankie did eventually offer a somewhat muted apology to all involved, but yes he was axed from Mock the Week, and tv in general, but then came back, firstly in a documentary type program about himself and how he got to where he was, then more recently more stand up shows where he was back to his original best.

I also saw him last year, at the Royal Albert Hall. To be honest, I felt he great even though he was a bit tame most of the time, but the person that put me off was his warm-up act. Supposedly an experienced comedian from Saturday Night Live, he made really intrusive, repeated jokes, about a couple, including racial jokes about physiological aspects about a group of work colleagues that in my view could have damaged the relationship between the friends, and among the group of work colleagues. I'm no sensitive wallflower and I love Frankie Boyle's and Jimmy Carr's extreme humour, including when he picks on individuals - but there's a line that they don't cross, and this guy crossed it and ended up leaving with me an uncomfortable taste in my mouth afterwards. I think that even Frankie Boyle and Jimmy car want their targets of jokes to be able to enjoy the joke without feeling persecuted, and I felt this guy would have left some of his targets feeling uncomfortable about the jokes he made.

Firstly a disclaimer; below I paraphrase Jimmy Carr. I am describing an event Jimmy Carr was involved in and this does not constitute my personal opinions. One of Frankie Boyles best jokes from Mock the Week was in a segment titled "Unlikely Things to Hear in the Queen's Speech". He said "I am now so old that even my pussy is haunted!" Once upon a time he would have been beheaded for that. Incidentally, the guy mentions Jimmy Carr would be cancelled if he said anything like the Holocaust joke on Netflix... Well he did. He did a joke about how there were 2 million gypsies murdered in the the holocaust and then said something along the lines of "but you don't hear them keep going on about it". There was an attempt to cancel him, but his defence was that he specifically said he was about to be extremely offensive and that it was to make a valid point about how the other victims of the holocaust are forgotten. His career is still going strong. The US has freedom of speech written into their constitution and it is supposedly sacrosanct. Sorry guys, this is freedom of speech. The right to say offensive things (within certain limits) without suffering censorship, and the freedom of people who do not like it, to not watch. The fact that Americans do reaction clips to UK comedians at all, shows that freedom of speech in America is in fact a myth.

The Madeline joke is a reference to 4 year old British missing child Madeline mcccann - she and her 2 year old twin siblings were left in a holiday flat in Praia Del Luz in Portugal whilst the parents went for dinner at a restaurant round the corner After getting home, they found her gone but the other 2 asleep They then proceeded to whip up a Europe wide media storm searching for her whilst simultaneously refusing to accept any responsibility for leavinf her alone This happened in 2007, IF she is still alive then she'd be 20 but was declared officially dead in 2020 Its a particularly bad taste joke for its era but as time goes on it tends to age well as less people really remember British comedy tends to work on Gallows Humour A good rule of thumb dont attack someone who cant defend themselves and leave at least 2 years between a tragedy and the first joke and you can probably get away with most things that and always read the room What finished Frankie Boyle for a while was a set of jokes mocking Jordan's disabled son Harvey Mocking Jordan... fine... shes an adult, mocking her son who has the mental age of a toddler... people tend to draw their own lines there.. Of course this subjective; as in the case of the mccans the joke's aimed more at their poor decisions than at the child herself...
