This was so incredibly helpful. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and paralyzed after receiving an R&R from an agent! Didn’t know where to start. I feel like the fog has been cleared and I know exactly what to do now! Thank you!

I like this. As a new novelist, learning how to revise my story is overwhelming. I am going to do one thing first. The retired FBI agent who read my story (she has advised me on procedure) gave me several areas in the story where I need to change procedure descriptions. I'll do that then do a big picture revision.

Your Save the Cat! book greatly helped me progress to getting my first draft completed. I have been working on a lot of developmental edits and I created a reverse outline to make it easier to look at the big picture. I am looking forward to the scene editing but I know how important the macro edits are before I get there. I have been consuming craft resources like crazy to get me through this revision/editing process. Thank you for your video!

I'll keep this method in mind but what I like to do is adjust the zoomed lens of the story from line to big picture whenever necessary because there's always the chance to discover new ideas as you plan and write.

So, we have to read the novel once to mark what part goes in each of the 3 levels, then read and revise more 3 times, one for each level?

Do you read the first draft entirely before starting the first revision level?

This is a great question! I can't speak for everyone, but as the channel owner hasn't answered yet, here's my take: No, you don't have to read the first draft in its entirety in order to revise. You likely have at least an idea of one or two things that need cutting or adding to make the story work. Creating a rough outline listing each scene, emphasizing the major scenes, will also help you narrow down where to start. Every writer is different, though, and if you feel like you need to, go ahead and read the first draft at the outset. In my case, I skimmed through the opening scenes because I knew it was all there to the page-level edit (it began as a short story and I edited that thing to within an inch of its life 😂). Next, I added a subplot that explains two major story arcs, if not three. I'm sure you're up to a similar challenge! I wish you all the best on your revision process, if you're not done. If you are, kudos!

So do you revise with one method for an entire chapter or the entire story before moving on to the next level?
@5Gburn

Yes. It's difficult as heck to not nitpick the little stuff, but yes. Absolutely yes.

Hello, I'm an aspiring writer with an odd question. I have a passion for creating stories, but I have no talent. I was born with a litany of mental disabilities and with a low IQ. Despite my attempts, I've been unable to improve my intelligence in a way that would yield any merit, both in writing and in a number of pursuits. I'm in my late 40s and I believe it's too late to build any career in writing.I've been wasting my time and energy in trying to write a number of books to no avail. This passion for story creation will not leave me. Any advice on how to eliminate this passion for writing? It's not going anywhere and there is no extrinsic value for me if I continue with this dream.
