I feel like the internet is just so over inflated on everything. I've honestly never met a "tactical" ex-military guy who disrespected 22lr. Nor have I ever met a prepper who didn't own (or plan to own) a modern centerfire rifle. 22 has it's place.

CMMG .22 conversion for the AR works very well, is relatively cheap, and you dont need a whole new rifle. Heck, you could carry it with a mag and a 50rd box of .22 into the field with your main loadout.
@Kalbee
@Kalbee 25 дней назад
I think PNW guerrilla has a video on it and it pretty much killed their gas system on their AR after a few thousand rounds. But they did say you might be able to mitigate that by sending a mag of full power 5.56 through the gun after a range day training with .22lr
@Hatchet_Jack556
@Hatchet_Jack556 25 дней назад
@Kalbee this is correct, the fouling will clog your gas system and CMMG recommends shooting a handful of rounds of 556 after a couple hundred rounds of 22lr. You could also build a cheap, dedicated 22lr upper

I have the CMMG kit, 1500 rounds through it. The mags suck to load, like a lot. My extractor had the tooth chip off so my extraction occurs sometimes. The firing pin spring also broke on it. Honestly, it is not a good tool to teach you how to shoot it is extremely unreliable even before these issues. I have tried expensive CCI all the way yo cheap Aguilla and it gets catastrophic malfunctions every other mag. If I did it again I would buy a used dedicated .22 AR instead. I have not had issues with my gas system but concur that accuracy is nonexistent. Even so, rimfire is frustrating to shoot because every 10 rounds you get a dud, I think rimfire is outdated. Use a 380 to hunt rabbits and at least it will go bang every time. I would not recommend training with rimfire unless you are practicing clearing jams. .22 is very good at jamming any gun.

Good rundown. Thanks for not mentioning the moose your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate took down with a .22lr at 1,200 yards with iron sights. There are misconceptions on both sides of the aisle which is why I had to address it hyperbolically. .22lr has some very practical uses and I use mine for pest control almost daily. But when the perimeter alarm goes off in the middle of the night, it's definitely not what I am grabbing.

@@TheOVprodigyIt’s not impossible, of course. Even elephants have been brought down with .22. Bears are still living beings with organs and if those organs are perforated the being cannot sustain its biological processes. Where the problems comes in is that the parts of a bear where .22 can achieve sufficient penetration to perforate the organs are few. Also, the size of the perforation matters. A .22 sized hole in a bear’s lung will kill it, in a few minutes to a few hours. A 2 inch hole will kill it now. I wouldn’t want to use something for hunting or defense which isn’t likely to have an immediate effect, if it has one at all.

My wife hates the concussion caused by anything that isn’t a 22 or black powder. She’s also not exactly a very big person, and can’t really lug around a heavy gun. She doesn’t enjoy guns or shooting a whole lot, but she enjoys shooting with me, because I’m there, we’re having fun together, and I don’t make her shoot anything that makes her feel uncomfortable. She is comfortable shooting her 22s, and if the world goes to hell I’d rather have her help me with an M&P 15-22 she knows how to use than with a 556 or 308 she’s uncomfortable using.

@@scott_hunts Idk why everyone brings up armor when it comes to 5.7. MILITARY rounds, sure, can go through some serious armor with that caliber, but the general rounds you can get with a 5.7 aren't much different than a 5.56 when it comes to ballistics. Sure it's a pistol vs rifle round, but you might as well be firing a rifle round out of a pistol. That's pretty much what 5.7 is. Either way, point of the matter is, 5.7 is low recoil and high power like a 5.56.

@AhHereWeGo 17 дней назад
@@MrCobb-rq8iv the entire point is to have something small and compact. Also, a 26” barrel on a 22 is more accurate because it slows everything down to subsonic. After 18”, most .22 is done expanding effectively and your barrel actually causes it to slow down, so it’s only more accurate because you’re staying subsonic. It’s the same reason all .22 match ammo is subsonic, going transonic destabilizes the projectile. Which is to say, CCI standard velocity out of a 10” barrel gives you the same effect

I agree that the .22 is overlooked often by the tactical community but I also feel like it's sometimes overrated by some people. You always hear about it being "the most lethal round ever" without citing anything other than anecdotes, and not understanding why it's so often used to kill people. There's a reason most people don't choose it often for self-defense, and why most militaries moved away from it in those instances of duty roles you mentioned.

My second gun was a Remington 870 express youth model chambered in 20gauge. It's still a very good shotgun imo. It's a super handy size since it's the youth model. Then...I went down the rabbit hole. Next gun was an AKM. Then a Glock 17. Then a bunch of AR15s, more Glocks, some Caniks, Sig, some more AKs, etc.

I feel ya, my first gun was a 2 gauge rem 870. I don’t shoot it much but hot dayum it’s a light handy and very maneuverable gun. I’ve honestly been considering moving that over as my home defense weapon as they just WORK and 20 gauge still isnt ANYTHING to shake a stick at in terms of the smack down it can dish out.

Now that you are thinking fud guns for the zombie apocalypse, try sniffing the 22 magnum. Ammo does cost more, but I have killed piles of gophers, coyotes, badgers, javelina, trash pandas, a skunk at 100 plus yards. It hits harder, further, and penetrates armour. Still not as loud as a 223. My get home bag has a marlin takedown 22 mag. Lite weight, not so scary looking, ammo is lite, so you can carry more. And it fits in a ukulele case. Grey man.

Accuracy testing with CCI Stingers are not the best way to test. Let me say this: Every 22lr weapon is very ammo specific. With blowback weapons the name of the game is balance and timing. CCI mini mag in a Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin 60 are amazing IF you balance the recoil spring with the round. It's not unlikly to get 1.5inch groups at 100 yards. Also, cheap weapons have places where the handle touches the barrel. If you float the barrel, then you make it more consistent which equals accurate. Then find which ammo run most consistent in your weapon and stick with it. 22lr can be finicky but with a few tweeks can be the most accurate thing you shoot inside of 100 yards.

In an alamo scenario defending the homestead, don't overlook the FIBSA factor you put on the marauders from multiple defenders throwing down heavy .22 fire from several semi autos. In Canada, for example, there's no limit on rimfire magazine capacity, and.22 is relatively dirt cheap, so you could call it the civilian version of suppressing fire.

Drew's breakdown of all the role-specific guns at the beginning hits home and is exactly why I love this channel so much. I feel like I have every base, short of Anti-Material, covered after a trim-down/modernizing/updating of my collection over the past few years. Even with distilling a 20-year collection down to the neighborhood of 20 new Purpose-built tools, I still had 3 22LRs make my final cut. A Henry with sentimental value, along with a Ruger Silent SR-ISB 10/22, and TBA Sicario Ruger 22/45 you could hunt squirrels in the suburbs with. I also have a 300BLK JTAC Elf Owl bolt-action pistol/CGS Hyperion combo that I could quietly take a deer with. Plus an extensive "End Of Times" set of Chaszel 12 gauge Caliber adapters that will let me shoot just about anything through my H&R Ultra Slug.

One point to consider guys, if .22LR is all you have, or even a .410 shotgun, YOU LEARN PDQ to make it effective. Especially in a defensive role around the homestead. You adapt your tactics to match the ability of the gun you have. If .22 is all you have then PRACTICE, PLANNING and Preparation become very important. And experienced .22LR shooters usually learn to be VERY accurate.
