Anyone else has watched several of Scott's videos, and is gradually becoming addicted to his style and feels sad when a day goes by without a new video?
Growing up in the 70s, you couldn't get away from radio hits like 10cc's 'I'm Not in Love' or Doobie Bros' 'Black Water.' I grew to hate them because of the overplaying. Listening to them recently, they floored me with how good they were.
AOR radio stations is where I got my start into Metal, Prog, and Prog Metal. Classic Rock stations made me hate Fleetwood Mac, Boston, and the Eagles for overplaying them until I never wanted to hear them ever again.
Honestly a good point. Just because something's overrated doesn't make it automatically terrible, it could just be decent but with an unjustified amount of hype and reputation to it. I do like some of the bigger singles off of Thriller, especially the title track, but I can see why the album on the whole doesn't quite match the sales figures. (And in my opinion his best song was Smooth Criminal, anyway, that's a hill I'm prepared to die on.) As for albums I'm a bit more specifically versed in, I might have to be a bit controversial and say The Wall, at least among prog albums. I don't think it's bad, by any means, and there's a lot I really like and appreciate about the themes and some specific standout tracks. I just have a bit of a hard time wanting to go back to listen to it as a whole because I find the plot, while good in concept, a bit scattershot in execution, a bunch of songs are a bit boring to me even when they're necessary for the story to work, and that inflates the run time a bit past what I'd be willing to put up with. That, and the bitter irony of an album about the dangers of self-isolation only driving Roger Waters further from the people around him. It's still a really good album, but coming after a string of truly great albums it's a bit underwhelming for its reputation. There's still the makings of a great album in there, it's just not quite finished. (As unpopular an opinion as it is I find myself going back to the Gilmour-led albums more than The Wall, maybe I'm just weird but there's some good tracks buried on those.) That said, you can't argue with Comfortably Numb. But hey, I've seen plenty of people be harsher than me about The Wall, so, if enough people call something overrated, does it cease to be overrated in some sense? Worth pondering, I suppose.
Great show and observations ! Evaluating albums from another era reminds me of a comment made by Miles Davis when a journalist told him he had been listening to an album of his from 1948. He said that he thought Miles had improved greatly since then. "When did you first hear it ?" Miles asked. "About a year ago" said the journalist. " Man" said Miles, "you should have heard it in 1948 !"
To me, "Off the Wall" is a much better record. Actually, "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", as recorded on that album, is the very best thing Michael Jackson ever made as a solo artist in my book.
Thriller is kind of like the Mona Lisa of pop music. If you go to the Louvre, people are crowding to see and photograph the Mona Lisa. No other painting attracts anything like as much attention. This is not because it's the best painting of all time but because it is the most famous painting of all time. Its status as the most well-known has perpetuated its popularity. Thriller has continued to be the best-selling album of all time simply because it is the best-selling album of all time. Having said that, a bit harsh on Beat It!
I was NOT a Clash fan..but all I knew was Rock the Casbah (or however it is spelled, Hate that song!) BUT when I set down and listened to ALL of the album LONDON CALLING, I thought it was one the best albums that I had ever heard!! Believe it or not, I had owned the album since the 80's but never listened to it. It was given to me by a friend in a Punk band....I wished I would have taken the time to listen to it back then. It wasn't because it was punk, I liked punk, it was just because I hated Rock the Casbah so much!! That said I may not have enjoyed London Calling back then as much as I do today as my tastes have changed.
Thriller is a perfect culmination of the times. It's a Quincy Jones album with MJ on vocals. They were at their zenith at the time with the rest of the session players.
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Anything by Wilco Weezer - Blue Album/Pinkerton Bad Brains - self-titled Nirvana - Nevermind The Beatles - Rubber Soul/Revolver Neil Young - Harvest David Bowie - Aladdin Sane Anything by Eagles Michael Jackson - Bad (Relied too much on vocal layering, very maximalist. Doesn't show off his vocals in the same way his first 2 proper solo albums did.) Pink Floyd - The Wall Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (prefer everything else they released in the 80's, as well as the three-album run when Jim O’Rourke was a full-time member) Devo - Q: Are We Not Men (prefer their next 2 albums, Duty Now for the Future and Freedom of Choice, even their 'Hardcore' compilation) King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King (Everything that came after makes this look like child's play. Definitely a product of 1969.) And just to piss you off, Can's Ege Bamyasi, for Kanye clearing the "Sing Swan Song" sample, interpolating it for one of his worst early-period songs ("Drunk and Hot Girls"). Yes, this was back when the music mattered more than public image or whatever's going on with him mentally/financially/politically.)
If you want my opinions on overrated rap albums, it's definitely Wu-Tang, Beastie Boys, and Nas' debuts. But then again, I'm a child of 1999-2008, so a lot of the classics, and I mean "shit released before 1995" didn't do a lot for me.
My 5 are .............. #1) U2 - Joshua Tree #2) Taylor Swift - 1984 #3) Guns 'n Roses - Appetite for Destruction #4) David Bowie - Blackstar #5) Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
@@johnhoran9840 It's not widely known that the guitarist's nickname was originally "The Hedge"but that obviously became ridiculous after all of his hair fell out over a long weekend. That's what overusing delay pedals does to you.
9:42 “just cause you’re playing a bunch of notes doesn’t make it good” That right there is my review of so many prog bands 😂 great video, btw! It’s really good to just shoot the shit.
Even that cool "Mama say mama sa..." part in P.Y.T. isn't that cool since he ripped it off wholesale from “Soul Makossa” by Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango.
Best show of dislike I have seen! So much to love in the music world, I never like to watch "dislike" videos. I so agree though with almost every pick My Bloody is crap, Guns, Amy, Eminem, and Wilco Yankee was so overrated, Stayed away from all hip hop, rap, except De La Soul's Me Myself & I, glad you pulled out great records that you liked. Keep on going on!
I'd pick Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart as the most overrated album ever. It's an intentionally wacky experiment to make an album as painful to listen as possible. It's just musically terrible. I don't believe anyone actually likes it, people who say they like it are just admiring it for it's novelty value. -Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. It has two or three great songs, but to me most of it is just okay. -Dark Side Of The Moon. It's mostly an album of inoffensive and accessible soft rock at heart, but because it's dressed up with "meaningful" lyrics and cool sound effects it's considered a work of art. And don't tell me I need to be high to appreciate it best, that's like saying you have a girlfriend who's prettiest when you're drunk. Led Zeppelin 1- okay it was very influential but over the years I've become aware of just how much of it is unoriginal. Some songs like Dazed and Confused, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and How Many More Times , Communication Breakdown are reworkings of other peoples songs. Black Mountain Side is a complete ripoff of a Bert Jansch song. And with a couple of admitted covers like You Shook Me and I Can't Quit You Baby, that doesn't leave much original songwriting left. -Beatles "White Album" - I know they were experimenting but there's just too many silly throwaway songs. -Queen Greatest Hits albums. A lot of "fans" these days merely own the Greatest Hits albums and enjoy watching Freddie the Showman onstage. 1970s Queen albums are full of obscure gems that a lot of fans seem to have never heard. Like Black Sabbath, Rush, Yes and Genesis, it's the 1970s work that has them at their best. Paranoid by Black Sabbath. I *do* think this is a great album, the trouble is it totally overshadows the other Black Sabbath albums. The first six Sabbath albums are great. They were actually getting into prog metal territory with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage. It's like people only heaping praise on Revolver by The Beatles while ignoring the other albums.
I agree about Trout Mask Replica, it's one of those albums I've tried to "get" for decades, and just can't. I also agree about Led Zeppelin's debut, it's practically a cover album (Led Zeppelin II is half covers as well). I'd also throw in Nevermind the Bullocks by The Sex Pistols. It has 4 great tracks on it and the rest I never need to hear again. However, those are offset by your takes on Pet Sounds and Dark Side, which are insane to me.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I think Captain Beefheart is like a 'cult' artist, he has a small but faithful following. I actually heard "TMR" as a youngster, and it just didn't grab me. I tried it again as an adult, through this site, and I had the same reaction. But Frank Zappa seemed to like him, that likely helped his career.
Stop talking about Dark Side being overrated. It's as close to perfection as you will find in any album. I understand people are tired of it but it's never overrated.
The Answer IS INDEED Dark Side. It’s not even in the better half of PF albums. So bland. And odd that it was sandwiched in between two of their best albums, Obscured and WYWH
It really is personal opinion which I think everyone should be entitled to, but for me I don't care much for any Radio Head album, but enjoy most of the songs on Michael Jackson's albums.
Thriller’s biggest weakness are the ballads. Who wants to be serenaded by someone who hasn’t figured out their own sexuality yet? Billie Jean is easily one of the best songs of all time. Beat It, Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, Thriller & P.Y.T. are all solid. Human Nature is passable. The rest of the album is pure garbage.
Hiya, Scott! Say, we're in 95% agreement here, but just some notes . . . . Jackson had a lot of high quality help on Thriller like Rod Temperton, Steve Porcaro and Quincy Jones. One might say that the ALBUM isn't overrated, but that Michael Jackson is for recording it. And, yes, "Bad" is better. Quadrophenia and Tommy are indeed both prog; great prog! "Who's Next" is definitely not prog, but a masterpiece of solid rock 'n roll. The three songs, Bargain, Behind Blue Eyes and Mobile carry that album into greatness. I think AC/DC is overrated, but only because their singer sounds like a cement mixer. The Eagles aren't all that country-ish. They just suck.
I can agree with you to a degree that Thriller is overrated just based on how iconic and massive it is and the sales numbers. However, it is not even close to the most overrated album ever for me, per there's still a lot of good music on Thriller that holds up better than many others (I actually still enjoy Human Nature, even if it is basically a Toto song). That is very cool you got to meet MJ..reminds me of the experience I had meeting Prince, although you got to spend a lot more time with him. Those 3 huge albums are MJ's legacy, however his greatest song for me is his Prog song with "Earth Song." Most overrated? I would probably go with either Nevermind or OK Computer. OK Computer though I'd give a stay of execution given it infliuenced so many bands/albums I love.
@@TheProgCorner very cool video idea. Yes, I did get to meet Prince. I talked about it in a video a few years ago. I was music shopping in Minneapolis an afternoon in November 2009, at a store named "Cheapo," and barely anyone was in the store. He walks in with his small entourage and nobody, including the staff noticed. I went up to him and asked him 1 question and told him I wouldn't bother him. I asked him about Jellybean Johnson and he goes "he's not a very good drummer" lol.
Off the Wall is Michael Jackson's best a;bum. It may be disco, but it's disco the way it should be done. Pink Floyd is my favorite band. Dark Side of the Moon is their magnum opus, but that doesn't make it their best. Wish You Were Here is my favorite.
You lost me at Prince. He was the bane of my 1980s. With the exception of his surprisingly good guitar solo at the end of Let's Go Crazy, I hated pretty much everything he ever did. He was one of two people (the other being Donald Trump) that made me despise arrogance as a character trait.
most people dislike 'arrogance' in others. Prince was certainly ego-centric, but so are many legimately talented artists. The Rolling Stones actually labeled themselves the 'greatest rock and roll band', and they are not far off in that assessment.
@@wylierichardson-tu6zs That's true about artists thinking highly of themselves, but even though most of them do, most also have the good sense and humility to go light on blowing their own horn. It's great to be proud of your hard work, but claiming to bet better than others marks the line between confidence and arrogance. I don't care how amazing or overrated a person's talent is, as soon as they openly brag about being the greatest, they lose my respect and interest. I didn't know that about the Stones, but to be honest, I was never much of a fan of theirs either. Start Me Up and a few others were good, but I never thought much of Jagger's singing or dancing.
Led Zeppelin has been my favorite band for decades, but I do think that Led Zeppelin IV is a bit overrated. I would rank Led Zeppelin III, Houses of the Holy, and Physical Graffiti above it. "Black Dog" and "Rock and Roll" get way too much airplay compared to the rest of the Led Zeppelin discography.
@@shaynewest8757 Led Zeppelin has dozens of great songs, yet those two songs are not only overplayed, they are always the go-to songs for radio DJs, and usually top lists of greatest Zep songs.
Overated means something that tops every poll that doesn't deserve to not a good song your sick of hearing. I don't like LZ but can't deny IV deserves its place as one of the great albums even though I never need to hear any of it ever again. Again learn the meaning of the word.
@@shaynewest8757 Did you read my last comment? I said, "...usually top lists of greatest Zep songs." Not only do I understand the difference between those two words, you apparently do not know the spelling of "you're."
I disagree about Back to Black. I think it was more "fashionable" than overrated. Amy W. had her own "retro" groove that was not built for large arenas. My respect for this album grew when I listened more closely to the arrangements, and they're fantastic. And her vocals are superb.
A Prog Rock connection to Thriller is that Jon Anderson of Yes said in an interview that Quincy Jones told him that he and Michael Jackson got the riff on Billie Jean from a track on the The Friends Of Mr. Cairo, an album Jon made with Vangelis.
Everything by the Clash, they were good but personally ive always preferred The Damned who are so much more diverse and criminally underrated (and much better musicians) im sure ill get some hate for that, what can i say Scott, im feeling inspired:-), also can't stand ELPs Brain Salad surgery.........thats it ive done it now haven't i, great video as always
I love that Zon record behind you, I remember buying the album when it was released and it was pretty good. I agree that the followup to your number one is a better album! Awesome story about meeting Michael!!
For me, I tend to think albums are overrated when they are over exposed. It’s hard for me to listen to Led Zeppelin IV, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were Here, Rumours, or anything by the Eagles. They get played so much. Not that they are not great albums; the media ruined them for me
It figures that it took a dance move to start the feeding frenzy. Says a lot about pop music. All those boy bands and Britney Spears etc were always more about dancing than they were about music….not comparing MJ to any of those…he had more talent in his pinky finger than most huge pop stars.
@@TheProgCornerDave seems like a lovely human. He’s supports new acts, respects the classic artists, and draws nary a negative word. But I find FF’s music dull as dishwater. 😂
I think most of these albums come into this category not because they are bad but because they are overplayed to death . I don’t care if I never hear Rumours again ever .
I think to talk about GnR’s Appetite you have to look at it in the context of the time it came out when MTV was drowning in synth pop and hair metal bands( a few of which were good), but nonetheless, Appetite felt like a breath of fresh air at the time. I also think the deep cuts on that album are better than most of the singles that came off the record. In retrospect I still think it’s their best album and I do still like it, but not as much as I used to, so maybe it hasn’t aged very well.
An album can be way overrated and still great, that's why I'd probably go with Sgt. Pepper's. It's at number one on so many lists and in terms of how many great memorable songs are on it it's one of the weakest Beatles albums from A Hard Day's Night on. For a concept album it's not got much of a theme, but of course I heard it in the context of all the other concept albums it inspired and can't really understand what it meant in 1967.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is BY FAR the most overrated album, I remember when it came out I and every R&R fan said this a bunch of crap they orchestrated out of their childhood . It good music but not earth changing like the marketing folks say. Electric Ladyland was a earth shaker
It's a great record, but yes it's overrated. Almost half of it is filler, or close to it - getting better, she's leaving home, fixing a hole and good morning good morning. I don't like Mr kite personally but the sort of circus music fits thematically and it's successful at what it is. Same with the title track. Rita and 64 are sort of cutesy vaguely irritating little things that anticipate wings cornyness but they're still structured well and memorable, they're good songs. Friends, Lucy, within you and day in the life are enduring classics. So yeah it's a mixed bag. What's it's highly rated for seems to just be the pioneering/adventurous nature of highly polished mildly psychedelic pop on that high level in that mainstream of a channel. It definitely had a huge impact, even if I skip like four tracks.
I have always thought that it has a generic elevator music quality to it, so perfectly performed by great session players that it lacks some needed humanity. It is too cool for school.
Yeah, Steely Dan is for listeners who think Rock needs sophistication (it doesn't). Consequently, the Dan's records are Rock that wants to be Jazz but not Fusion. Nevertheless, I've always though 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' is fantastic.
Love to see the Frank Black album behind you Scott. He’s my absolute favourite singer / guitarist songwriter as his written work for all his solo stuff ( and the Catholics) and Pixies stuff testify.
ditto! so many great tunes and that little rasp in his voice. first time i heard Calistan i was hooked. GREAT. (i also , want to live on an Abstract Plane)
Your opinion on dark side of the moon being overrated and not their best album is so accurate! I think animals and wish you were here are both perfect albums with incredible depth and meaning putting them above dark side. Love the energy and vibes from Canada 🇨🇦
Nirvana should always be praised for shutting down all those horrible guys who look like girls and treat women like crap poser bands like motley spew and poison.
There’s a reason certain albums sell well. It’s because they’re good albums. Obviously other cultural influences play into this, but to sit here and call albums like nevermind, sgt. peppers, dark side of the moon overrated is a pointless conversation. For example, I agree wish you were here is ever so slightly better than dark side (although it’s close), but I acknowledge there are reasons for its greater success over wish you were here. In the case of Michael Jackson’s thriller, the only way it could not be considered “overrated”, in any way let alone the most overrated of all time, is if it were the best album of all time. And that, IS AN INCREDIBLY SUBJECTIVE TOPIC. What one considers to be the best of anything is bound to have controversy. Therefore, it is an impossibility for thriller not to be considered overrated by someone because of the threshold it is placed in. And because of the negative connotation that is associated with calling an album overrated, the only thing coming out of a conversation like this is turning people away from great music, like all of the previously mentioned albums. Success and quality should not be this heavily aligned!
Dark side of the moon is the most overrated album of all time. Definitely not the greatest album of all time, rock album, it’s not even the best Pink Floyd album. Don’t get me wrong it’s great but it’s not the best anything.
He really threw in the kitchen sink. The E Street Band were cornball and made his tunes hard to listen to. His minimalist detour on Nebraska led to a whole new spasm of overrating because everyone was so excited to hear stripped-down Bruce.
I never got the Guns and Roses thing. I never thought they were that good. The playing was average but went well with the average arrangements. And I couldn't stand Axel Rose's vocals. And Bon Jovi. Awful. I always thought of Bon Jovi as corporate rock's 80's' Hair Band.
@@roy421000 There's a clip of me performing in our local bar dressed in Amish attire and singing Adele while playing banjo. Its not horrible but my brother said it sounded like Axel Rose trying to sing Adele. That was so mean but kind of spot on too. It wasn't too good
Thriller got insane media promo for 2 years. Shoved down the publics throats constantly. Many artists would have had massive success with that much saturation.
MTV actually didnt even play Michael Jackson's videos on their channel, at first. Sure, the tracks on "Thriller" got plenty of airplay on mainstream radio, but many other artists did as well. What made "Thriller" stand out from the pack? I personally dont own it, but I do have MJ's previous LP "Off the Wall". Good, but not quite a 'home run' quality-wise.
Fully agree....I've never understood Beach Boys "Pet Sounds"... pop pablum at best....just nothing there... But MY vote for most OVERRATED ALBUM...and I will stand my ground on this forever....THE WHITE ALBUM......Maybe 3 songs are even mildly OK....it's almost like the Beatles spit on their fans as they laughed thinking those idiots will buy any turd we put out while pretending it's high art...it ain't art...it's a money grab... Be honest....let's say you're having a party, everybody's hammered and somebody puts The Whit Album on.... You'll be attacked with WHO PUT THAT S#!÷ ON!!. I tried making peace with this album, buying 3 or 4 copies, listening ( begrudgingly)...it just never took.. Dark Side of the Moon Overrated? Its an impossibility!! Love your channel, btw. .
It's actually one of the top-selling albums of all time. If it was really that bad, word of mouth would have hurt it. I guess taste is subjective, but you are in the minority of music fans in your assessment of it.
To this day, I still don’t have any Michael Jackson in my collection. And although I’ve thought about getting ‘ Thriller ‘ in the past, I just couldn’t go there due to its burnout play. Speaking of burnout, I get why people are tired of albums like Dark Side, but I still think Rumors is exceptional. It rocketed its way to stardom because its overall appeal to the masses. Rumors is one of those that people enjoyed without even being a fan of Fleetwood Mac. However, I’m definitely into the early Peter Green material.
Maybe it's just me but I heavily dislike the term "overrated" and find it overused. Strikes me as conceited since it's about thinking that you know whether or not something deserves the acclaim it gets and I think that saying "this isn't for me and I can take solace in the fact that it's for someone else" is a far more mature way of going about things.
I find the "overrated *band*" lists pointless and frustrating because most people have only a cursory and incomplete knowledge of a bands catalog. I've seen reaction videos of middle aged guys in AC/ DC t shirts doing first time reactions to Black Sabbath or Queen. Some bands are known for only a few songs, and those will likely be accessible ones that get played on the radio. There's so many bands whose best songs are hidden away on their albums that rarely get airplay. If all people knew of The Beatles was She Loves You and Day Tripper then most people would think them highly overrated. Overrated *albums* lists are a bit better because there's a higher chance that people have actually listened to it all the way through and formed an opinion.
Good point, but with time, some albums do really pan out to attract a lot more attention than they deserve, and pop culture will always be that way, but if you can discern what really is meaningful from the slop, then you have good taste (and that's different for everyone, it's just about how seriously you take what you do appreciate). And in addition, overrated doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad, just that it gets more hype than it's worth.
@@MickSupperI agree with your second point, very few artists were genuinely ahead of their time. Just because Gentle Giant, VdGG, Magma, Roxy Music or Henry Cow were exceptionally good, doesn't mean they were "ahead" of their time, it was just a very good time!
@johnbrowne2170 The eagles used to open for Jethro Tull. Tull has a song called "we used to know" not too long after their time with Tull they came out with the song "Hotel California". Very coincidentally, their song has the same chord progression as "we used to know".
@johnbrowne2170 I agree, it's a better song, Even Ian Anderson, the guy who wrote. We used to know, says that it's a better song. But that's just one song. if you've ever seen the Eagles live and you think they are great. Then you haven't seen very many bands.
Sorry, but I have to go with Pet Sounds. Often called the greatest album of all time, and it's actually bad even by Beach Boys standards, which is not a high bar.
@@bobturnley2787By the standards of their contemporaries. It is the worst of the great 60s albums. All the fancy production techniques can't fix twee songs
@@sbwlearning1372 Aftermath and Fresh Cream are good albums, not great. Revolver and Blonde on Blonde both have one great song, otherwise hugely overrated. It wasn't the best album of the decade but there was nothing better in 1966.

I think the trouble is they made a few utterly brilliant possibly transcendant songs like Good Vibrations and God Only Knows so you want to like the other lesser songs
It was, Rock With You and the title track are amazing. Totally era defining. Thriller was rubbish in comparison, the videos made it appear better than it was.
Glad to see the point made about Off the Wall - great album and superior to Thriller in my opinion. I think those videos for Thriller with their enormous productions had a lot to do with making Thriller so popular at the time.
And here I thought that CCR diss yesterday was enough of a nuke! I don’t dislike Michael Jackson but I never caught on to him as much as some, so this doesn’t bother me at all lol.

rocky racoon, dont pass me by, do it in the road, I will, Julia, birthday, yer blues, mother natures son, me and my monkey, sexy sadie, helter skelter, cry baby cry. A phenomenal sequence of songs. You are so right- aside from the great 'Billie Jean,' the album should be called 'Filler.' The LP that Rock critics adore is 'Forever Changes' by Love. Try as I might, I don't hear it. BTW, the best Stones album is 'Let it Bleed.'
Hey Scott, I've watched a few of your videos and have come to the conclusion that you are the Scotty Kilmer of prog rock. That's cool. I wish I could be as animated as you and Scotty Kilmer, but I just can't. Keep up the good work!!!
It’s depends on HOW something is overrated. Is it in terms of popularity, or is it in terms of its innovation? In that regard, yes, I do think Pet Sounds is not the monumental work of art that it’s often considered. I agree about thriller. Good album, but nothing spectacular. I would also say, that Princes popularity far exceeds his actual talent, but that’s another story.
Prince? Hmmmm. When I saw him live it changed my opinion of him. This was right at the time of 1999 - right before he blew up. I was impressed. But I’m easily influenced…
Prince is underrated if anything. Albums like Around The World In A Day, Parade, Lovesexy, Controversy and Dirty Mind all need more love. Black Album needs to be reissued so more people can appreciate it. His 90's output is better than people make it out to be too, and some of his later works are solid.
Could make any song listenable and always did a great concert. At the end of the day he become like Abbott and Costello - there was too much of him for anyone but big fans.
