For any of these "overrated" majors I would say that they are all fine provided that you reach a sufficiently high level of education. In other words, if you study sociology because you actually want to be a sociologist then just keep going and get a Ph.D. As a sociologist you won't be rich but you will do OK and the point after all is that you will be doing what you want to do. I make a lot of money as an actuary but anesthesiologists make damn near half a million every year! Would I give up my career to become one? No because I don't want to do that kind of work.

My bachelors is in English, and i tell EVERYONE who wants to be an author TO NOT MAJOR IN ENGLISH. My English degree has helped me immensely with being in grad school because i know how to be a decent academic writer. along with the that my masters I’m working on is in Shakespeare so having a precursory degree in English is really helpful. If someone wants to be an author then they should spend the day writing, not going to school.

I think the reason why people get caught up doing liberal arts or general studies is because it's very similar to how we are taught in high school and middle school. In grade school we are taught a bit if everything...so when people come out undecided and go to college they go into these general degrees and because they are used to the format of grade school, they kind of never get out of it

Yeah, but as an aspiring adult you should understand, at the very least, the way the world works; this means money. The average 18 year old understands that money is important, but they think any and ALL jobs offer that. School is not as horrible as people say. Life is SOMETIMES pretty obvious. If you go to an elite university (e.g. Ivy League) then you can major in something irrelevant and useless and still land a good-paying job. Why? Networking! Those schools enroll more kids from the top 1% than the bottom 60%. If your roommate's dad is a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, you won't be looking for jobs on Indeed. Also, for some jobs, a degree from an accredited university just checks a box. The military is a good example of this.

I'm currently a French and English major in my final year ( I only picked up English because I discovered this year that it was possible to squeeze it in and still graduate on time ), and honestly, I agree that there's little value in an English degree. A French degree is pretty valuable where I live, but I have to say, there's absolutely nothing you can learn about English in university that you can't learn online...Not to mention that English is supposed to help with critical thinking but I don't think most of my peers (at my university at least) have really sharpened that skill... so much for that. I do kind of regret not going into computer science or some type of engineering simply because I think it would have challenged me more (and the better job prospects is nice too).

Ok I'm just gonna spill: As a high school junior I'm thinking either a major in biochemistry or physics (most likely physics) since I'm debating between having a physics based career (probably astrophysics) or something related to medicine (more on the research side). Then maybe a minor in history/literature/philosophy/psych/comp. sci (I know nothing about comp sci but it's useful)-one of those. So my issue is that I like nearly everything and the reason I want to major in something science related is because it's interesting and I feel like it's easier to learn humanities related subjects on my own especially since I absolutely love them. I guess I ultimately want a science-based career and then have a side gig based on writing (books/journalism??) because that's grown into a passion. I also want to learn more languages but I'm thinking I should just do that on my own time. With AP credits, I hope I can save some time and money and honestly, after undergrad I wanna get at least a Masters or PHD (cause science based careers generally need one-though if I change my mind, physics could still allow me a degree of flexibility I think) and I'm considering getting out of the U.S and studying in Canada or the U.K or something. I will say though that sometimes I just want to forget about it all and go start a bookstore or bakery or something in another country and live life in peace. That's probably not happening until I reach retirement age though....I dunno but hey I guess I"ll come back to this one day and see how much these semi-formed plans have changed. Edit: lol it's only been a few months and now I'm thinking about a double major in physics and political science....just wow what am I doing😅

It looks like you have the start of a good plan: 1. Major in either Physics (for a career as an astrophysicist) or Biochemistry (for a career in medical research, maybe MD-PhD?) 2. Minor in one of the humanities you are interested in. Philosophy seems to encompass a lot of them. 3. Take electives in the remaining humanities classes of your interest. You can also learn coding languages online.
@honjokun0615
@honjokun0615 4 года назад
Hi. Have you looked into either biotech, biophysics or biomedical engineering? Those majors might offer an overlap of your interests and you will have enough background credits to go into many fields. Majoring in BME might be a very pragmatic choice, too. As a scientist, I'd say that you're making the right choice to choose physics / pre-med for your undergrad and study languages and the humanities on your own or as a minor if your heart is still in the sciences. Growing up in Thailand, I was a bio major with a wide range of interests, so I kept taking language and social science classes on the side. But it was a good prep for work in public health. I eventually ended up in a state school in NY to study for a PhD in Epidemiology with a focus on global health. I worked on hand hygiene promotion in Sub-Saharan Africa, so I had to read Foucault (or tried to do so) alongside scientific papers when I was preparing for thesis defense. I had no formal qualification in the humanities. Maybe you see yourself in a role like this, too? Also, there may be more demand for a scientist with a moderate level of French than a French interpreter with moderate background in science. It's easier to study languages outside of school than to work on experimental studies, considering all the required resources, regulations and ethical clearances. Just my 2 cents.

I watched these videos and for the most part, it's helpful but Bachelor's Degrees in Exercise Science arent to become personal trainers. There are clinical positions in hospitals for exercise physiologists that require you have a Bachelor's in Exercise Science or Kinesiology. A person with just a personal training certification or high school diploma could not work with a patient in cardiac rehab for example.

In re: Psychology. I was an LVN (LPN) pulling a shift on a psych ward. Most of my coworkers that night were men/women who had a BA in Psych. They were glorified nurse's aids (called "counselors"); they made little better than minimum wage. My certificate (not degree) in Vocational Nursing takes 3 semesters to accomplish. I had a license; they did not. I got paid twice what they got and actually did less work. To a man/woman, they deeply regretted spending that much time getting such a useless degree. The "counselor" job was the only job they could find in the field.

Just about a week ago I made the decision to pursue a degree in sonography (ultrasound tech). Originally, entering college as a freshman this year I was convinced that I was going to become a doctor so my plan was to major in biology. After a lot of thinking and watching your videos, I finally came to the conclusion that a biology major is not a smart move. With the school that I will be applying to (after earning two prerequisites that I’m missing) it’s very easy to advance from the associates to a bachelors, leaving me with just prerequisites if I decide to go for an MD or PA. To any premed students reading this, really make sure to ask yourself if a biology major is worth it. Life is very spontaneous and does not go as planned and the only thing I have to say is that getting a degree that promises job security and is still a steppingstone towards medical school is an amazing approach. I’m not really sure why sonography isn’t really covered on this channel but I think it is a great career to pursue

I was a History major and now I'm an exec in the software world (I've worked in software my entire career). What History was great for was learning to intake a ton of information and distill it down to the pertinent facts that you need AND communicate those facts to another person. These skills have been invaluable during my career. (Plus, it's fun and interesting). Perhaps it's not for everyone, but I have NO regrets about majoring in History. (If you actually want to work as a Historian though, you will need to get at least a Master's degree).

I know this video is light hearted but I hope that doesn't stop kids from taking his advice. I graduated with a BS in civil engineering (the lowest paid engineering field for the first 4 years, after you get your PE your in the money), and landed a fantastic job. Excellent work/life balance and close to six figures starting pay. Folks, do engineering and don't let the math scare you. I got a GED and was terrible at math but I worked harder just to catch up and ended up with a math minor. Don't let people crap on environmental engineering either, oil and gas companies are paying a ton of money trying to keep a good rep. Industrial hygienist and industrial management are also good fields from what I've seen. Bottom line, if you don't know what degree to pick just don't go or get pressured into going. University is a trap and is predatory in it's tactics, it will ruin your life forever. A friend of mine got a 1 year mechanic certificate and is making just as much as I am right now.

Hi Shane will add my opinion here. 1. Those who are already wealthy can major in anything and still have a great job. 2. In many cases a Bachelor's in anything is not enough. Chemistry, History, Communication, etc. Look at grad school before graduation. Engineering is good and maybe something business related. 3. Many Liberal Arts/social sciences can be double majors. Food example Communications (PR) and Marketing. 4. Many are false taught college is the only way. In low college attendence Communities. It's seen as a "miracle" ladder, then people end up seeing your perspective.

Most of the people I have met in college and at university who study for a degree in criminal justice or forensic sciences are already employed in law enforcement. These degrees allow them to be eligible for promotion and pay raise. They are not useless, they are not necessary for employment, but they are necessary for job growth. I could only assume that for many other degrees there is a similar case. Going back on your comment on psychology degrees, as much as I appreciate you recognize that there are different types of psychology degrees, you are still under the impression that they are useless. A general psychology degree does not qualify you for a specific job, the same thing is true for most degrees (i.e. chemistry, biology, math, history, sociology). Did your undergraduate degree, prior to obtaining your Pharm. D., get you a job or was it the fact you had a college degree and you also had valuable skills not linked to your studies? Do not confuse criticism with hate, I still feel that when you present this information coming from a "personal finances" approach, the fact is that no degree (even your top rated ones such as PA and NP) are worth it. Degrees are very nuanced opportunities and there is more to them than just taking out massive loans; otherwise, you wouldn't have gone all the way to a Ph. D.

My degree is in Mass Communications which covers everything media (TV, Film, Radio, Music Production, Sound Design, Books, Video Games etcs), additionally, it covers Journalism and PR/Advertising as well. Schools that have students differentiate and focus on just one of the broader domains (PR, Journalism, or Media) tend to yield more equipped graduates. Organizational Communications is the discipline that is often referred to as the "College Athlete Degree" where you do indeed learn many great concepts, but they tend to be muddy in the specialized expertise aspect Three examples of potential jobs for them are HR, copywriting, and possibly social work.

So this is very specific to me. I am currently in a program for a General Study degree which applied most (72 out of 74) of my credits earned while serving in the military. I am going for the General Studies Degree because it is that fastest degree that I can get to commission into the Army Guard as an Officer. Commissioning in the Army Guard requires 90 credits earned toward a specific degree path so, in my very specific case, the general studies degree is the best one for me to fast track the process.

While I appreciate the heck out of this guy for his input and what he is saying is DEFINITELY worth considering… BUT… Here’s thr thing: Not everyone out there is looking for the major with the best career outlook. Some people just love their subject… they can’t imagine doing anything else… to those people, make SURE you are serious about your school work, making connections, seizing every opportunity available to you and working hard when you graduate. Yes, there are absolutely useless degrees out there that you should steer clear of (gender studies, art, etc.) but for History, Biology, English, Psychology, etc… there is still a lot for us to figure out about that stuff and we need folks studying it, going on to masters/doctoral studies and making progress in it. Go for it!

As a history major who is going to graduate in Spring 21', I can confirm history is awful. I plan on taking a random job that requires a B.A. or enrolling again in either a STEM field or medicine. (Only reason I can't right now is that I am poor and I am growing tired of having to study 24/7. Currently preparing for my midterm tomorrow. And not that it matters but I maintain a 3.9 GPA). So why is history awful? Well, mainly due to the vast amount of information you have to engage with in order to do well. If you don't, not only will you do poorly in most classes but if you actually attempt serious historical writing, you would inevitability be clueless and make a mess of things. History deals with nearly anything and everything and utilizes a lot of literary theories. I was not aware of this prior to going in; they (the teachers/professors) wait until you are a junior before they explain how "historical thinking" and "historical writing" works in the humanities. Essentially, I will have to continually write research proposals for the rest of my life to gain grants if I want to sustain my life with only a history degree. Aside from this, the only other option is teaching K-12 or continuing my education and going for a Masters or Ph.D. (both of which require more studying, work, and are very costly). And on a side note, history can be also very toxic. History deals with all of the details and interpretations of humanity's past. If you are uncomfortable reading extensively on American slavery, the holocaust, war crimes, and images of the deceased, then this might not be for you (not to mention that almost every person you will read will have been dead for decades to centuries). TL;DR History requires a lot of reading, studying, and writing. There are only three main ways of making money with 'just' a history degree: Writing research proposals for grants, teaching K-12, or becoming a professor. History is also toxic and deals with humanity's worst events (i.e., it is not for the faint of heart).

I disagree just because there exists many better degrees to go into medical school with. For example, nursing. Nursing actually teaches you much more about medicine than kinesiology and it also has for benefit to be a much more employable degree (if med school doesn't work out). Other better degrees include pharmacology and pre-med specific degrees. Also sports medicine requires more than a kinesiology degree in 95-99% of cases.

A freind got a degree titled “Masters of Science Americanus”. He was a Pit Boss at Ceasar’s Palace in Las Vegas, and a controlled alcoholic. He got of work at 0400, went to an AA meeting, got breakfast, and came to the University to take interesting classes. Started in Psychology, then Socialogy, who told him he had to take statistics, and he changed to taking math classes. Mathe department told him he had to take a lab science, and he switched to physics. Physics told him to take a chemistry sequence. So he starts taking just chemistry classes. The chemistry folks told him to take more math. Math, then told him computer programming. From programming he went to electrical engineering, to understand what went on in the black box. So, after twenty years and never seeing an actual counselor, he knew the chair of nearly every college on the campus, and most of the Deans. He had a solId GPA, and 240 semester credits. So the faculty senate made up a degree and gave it to him.

Who would have thought that a history degree would be a trap? 40000 in debt would take at least years to pay off, and the interest is the worst part. Biology also sounds scary, and I would not recommend going to graduate school, since it is grueling to get through. These degrees are great for certain careers. Exercise science is great for going on to become a sports trainer or doctor, or a physical therapist. Please try to become a trainer on the MBA without a degree; tell them you looked online. Sociology is great for becoming a lawyer or a counselor. Liberal arts is great for becoming a librarian… googling liberal arts is not going to cut it when you apply for a job. History is great for becoming a U.S. diplomat. English degrees could be great for becoming a teacher, technical writer, librarian. Criminal Justice is good if you want to work for the FBI or become a border patrol officer (government jobs do require you to have a bachelors degree in a related field). A bachelors in Psychology can get you a job working with troubled youth, a behavioral tech for people on the spectrum ($30 an hour), helping foster kids transition into real life, etc. A degree in communications will help you to become a language pathologist making $50-60 an hour. I must mention general studies by itself is, of course, pretty useless. But with one strategy, it is the most valuable degree you can get. That strategy is you must do a master's later in something useful. Many masters require a degree, any degree, with a few prerequisite subjects for admission. For example, to do a master's in Math 5 subjects is usually enough (some require more - occasionally even a lot more) - the usual 3 subjects calculus sequence, linear algebra and differential equations. Even if you know you want to do math, general studies sometimes allow 60 subjects in anything. Follow your interests or have the prerequisites for, say, computer science if you want to do that later, or pretty much anything else. You can load up on easy subjects (psychology is notoriously supposed to be easy), and if you know math is your thing, do those 60 subjects in nothing but math and related areas. General studies is the best degree out there, IMHO - when used properly. Personally, I did my undergrad in math, some financial math and computing, plus a master's in math even though I only ever worked as a computer programmer, but before I retired, I wanted to switch to Data science since they were getting me to do a lot of that work anyway as my math subjects included a lot of stats.

There is an exception though to the successful/famous author: Stephen King was an English major and became a English teacher initially. But I agree you do not need to major in English literature, in fact if anything I think it will kill your creativity and mire you in overtly complex introspection like it did for me years ago and discourage you from becoming a writer/novelist at all. It would be better to major in something else if you want to be a novelist; something more useful like STEM or maybe writing-related that can enhance your voice and creativity like Journalism.

May I know what is your thought on Hospitality Industry related course? I, myself is a graduate of Associate in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Based on my experience, this course is a waste of time and money because most classes or lessons are theoretical and unrealistic. On top of that, there are classes (Food and Beverage, Housekeeping, Bartending,…) that you can just learn for free by googling or attending vocational school. And yes, working in an industry like this is all about common sense and being hospitable (which is so ingrained in Filipino culture). They marketed the field as a booming industry, which is kind of true. However, graduates of this course so far does not always end up getting into one. Like myself, I ended up finding and working on unrelated fields.
