The most OVERRATED thing about THAILAND 

My experience is most people will always crave the food they were brought up with

I lived in a Homestay in Chiang Mai and the lady used to cook Thai food and sell it on the streets at the weekends, that was enough to put me off forever, raw chicken was left out in the midday sun for 2-3 hours, flies all over it and cats walking on the table, I tried to politely suggest this is unhygienic, she had no understanding and just laughed it off....

You’re dismissing Thai food as being nothing to write home about, yet lauding shepherd’s pie?! To use your own words, what’s so special about minced lamb and mashed potato?

I like Thai food, is simple and almost in any place is good enough. But is less healthy than we think, lots of fried food and lots of sugar everywhere.

I came to Thailand for the hot weather and spicy diarrhea.

I love a good burger its grilled with a nice brioche bun actually not very unhealthy. But the gf will moan at me saying its unhealthy meanwhile shes frying everything in sight 😂😂

I have to disagree with you;-) I eat Thai food over any other food any day of the year. It is not just rice dishes, but all the soups, fruits and different mixes of flavors. I had a Thai girlfriend in Germany for a while, she had a Restaurant and her food was to die for. I have been to many countries many times, may it be France, Italy, UK, USA or Mexico, just to name a few of the countries that I have spent many month or even years in. But nothing comes close to Thai food! As an example, I had the best Pizza of my live in Bardolino, Italy and I also had the worst Pizza of my live in Genoa, Italy. Same is true for Tacos and Enchiladas in Mexico or USA, from best to worst. However, in Thailand, I never had a bad meal and the variety along the roads is just out of this world. I remember a little soup kitchen in some alley with this lady in front making simple soups, 3 tables that barely hold together to sit down, behind her. The last time I was in Bangkok, I went there several times, as the soup was just unbelievable and it cost $1.00.

Shepherd's pie... man, I love that stuff. Only positive thing I can say about Thai food is I lost 5 kg within one month of living there. But maybe it was the heavy perspiration.

I've had a few dishes for around 60 baht that were really tasty, mostly in the countryside. The noodle soups in Silom are awesome. The place is so crowded that you have to wait 15 minutes to be seated. It's not that important to me either. But it's by no means off the shelf, I see it differently.

You’re probably right;it is nothing to write home about. I think it is tasty food that goes well with a cold beer. It seems not long after you’ve had Thai food you are hungry again.

Same in Vietnam. Food is left under the sun for hours and smog and flies everywhere. In Vietnam they have a rat situation and you see rats everywhere even in broad daylight. You can eat super cheap but is the food clean? Has the oil been re-used a hundred times? Sure u can eat for 2 bucks but do you want to do it? How bad is the impact in your heath?

Love the food, khao soi, pad ga prao, som tam, noodles, sticky rice, curries, laab, tom yum, fried meat and rice. But I also like a good beef filet from FX Buckleys (where one dinner probably costs as much as a week of thai food in chiang mai😅). Cheers

You cant counter arguments about food preferences. Thai food is obviously loved the world over because many people think it's delicious. It's not rocket science. You obviously don't agree and that's just your preference. While perhaps not healthy, I find it to be delicious.

I've been moving around SEA for a couple of years. Thought Thai food was great, then I went to Malaysia and the food there just blew Thai food out the water. Huge portions, roughly the same price, not overly spicy, curries, breads, nasi kandar... Just delicious 😋

Just difference of opinions mate. These uncharitable summaries are stupid though: "dead fish on rice", "meat on a stick". You said you want a taco? I can just say it's "dead cow in a tortilla" Personally, my only complaint of Thailand is the weather actually. It's too hot and the pollution is terrible right now.

as someone who has an addiction to carbs, and fried rice being my fav dish, as well as seafood being my fav type of food, and as a woman who loves spicy foods... and cheap prices..... I def want to travel to thailand to experience the food! so many veggies too sounds like a food kingdom

Finally Someone I can agree with. Weather first, food nearer to the Bottom of the list. There's a few dishes I like, but overall it is generally not my cup of tea (though it is quite better than some other countries').

I love shepherds pie, fish n chips and most comfort foods but I also like Thai food like deep fried fish chilli sauce, curried crab, beef broccoli oyster sauce etc.

I like a mixture of local food and my own western favorites the are available here, but I am probably 75/25 western, but I haven't been here long - so maybe that will change. I too am not a seafood person, nor am I big on fruits like mangos etc. It is just a slightly broader set of options.

An Irish gentleman dissing Thai food is quite interesting to watch. Sarcasm aside, I find Thai food leagues better than, let's say Filipino food, a country I seriously considered retiring to but could not, due to the food I just could not stand, no hate to the lovely people there, just to be clear.

I always thought the best part of Thai food is that it's relatively healthy fresh and inexpensive and accessible to everyone when I first started to go to Thailand all the dishes were new to me and exciting to try anything is better than microwaved 7/11 meals health wise and Bangkok has every imaginable food available today so there are no limits

I haven't had Thai food yet that I didn't like... but I choose carefully. I regret not trying the boat noodles. I've since started putting a fried egg on damn near any soup, rice, salad, or pasta.

I'll have a boul of noodle soup and some fried rice occasionally but that's about it. I shy away from street food. Falang food is pretty cheap also.

I totally agree. I have lived in Thailand for nine years and I am not impressed by their cuisine.

It's common to get " home blind" . Eat fried rice for a week and then tacos for a week and I'm pretty sure that fried rice wins in the long run.

It's the inconsistencies that do my head in. This normally applies to street sellers and food courts but it's also happened in restaurants. I just feel like Thais wing it when it comes to following a recipe or portions lol. Even from the same vendor. Dependent on the time of day, the mood they are in.... you can get lots or almost nothing. Same with spicy lol.

That's the problem. You don't like seafood. I LOVE it!!! I could easily become a pescetarian if I lived in Thailand. The Thai seafood dishes are remarkable in their variety and preparation.

There is a restaurant in the Hilton hotel in Pattaya on beach rd. Some of the best food I've ever tasted. I can taste the techniques that went into preparing it. They have a Thai soup that's amazing.

I fully agree with you, Pad Thai is delicious but everything else is okay, I was in Italy last month and everything there is top notch.

Try gambas in tamarin sauce or other very sophisticated Thai dishes. But for that, you'll have to go in a restaurant like "Local" on soi23. lol.... You are characterising Thai food by what you find on cheap street stalls... But I do indeed love my 40 thb Kai man gai (chicken rice) in my street or my forever soup in Chatuchak.

So true about the food - glad you say it so bluntly because i thought it was only me that felt that way. One thing to remember though is that when people asked others like me why i visit Thailand - I would just say it was for the food - just to throw them off topic. ...and that's how the myth continues.

I’ve got to agree. There are only a certain amount of dishes. Different areas are known for their dishes. Thai seafood is brilliant. Vietnamese food tastes fresher and isn’t disguised with chilli like Thai food. I do like western food cooked Thai style. Fish and chips cooked with a hint of chilli and Thai spices is delicious.

Some valid points, but yes... the food was a factor. I don't like to shop/cook/clean/handle waste. I cant afford to eat out much in the West, but I can in Thailand. The key in Thailand is to find good vendors. Some are 9 > 10 but a bit rare.Find ones that use a lot of fresh veg in their dishes and u are on the right track!

It depends on how you food pallet has been educated. I cannot stand Indian curry, but I love gent kiao wan. It’s a personal thing

Thank you for your honesty. I am thinking about retiring to Hua Hin two years from now. In November I will travel to Thailand for a month and I really need to know what westerners don't like about the place. All these "rosy" videos about the place can give the wrong impression. No place is perfect, it's just a matter of how well you can fit in and overlook those things you do not like.

There’s crazy variety of food available in Pattaya, Thai Lebanese Indian…for me the Som Tom at the Essan joint is epic, as is the food court on Soi 15.

I looked at the obesity statistics of the world. Thailand has higher percentage of obese people than Cambodia and Laos. Cambodia, Laos and Thailand eat similar food and Why is it. It turned out that Thai people use too much sugar in their food. No surprise! If you eat thai food, you will notice it tastes so much sweet. It tastes so good at first few bites and then it taste starts getting richer and richer until you say that’s enough.

Dave how many times have you done this topic? How about some new content? I really don't think you have truly tried tradional Thai food. It's not about the street food and friend rice really is not a Thai dish.

You appear your own worst enemy picking food such as fried or 7-11 profit driven food or maybe just kindly asking the cook not to add sugar or msg. Msg is a little tricky and you have to know and trust the person not to add it. Same any country, there is healthy tasty food if you wish to eat that way.

You are 100% correct about Thai food. I went to Thailand for two reasons: low cost & the fitness atmosphere "Fitness Street" in Phuket (Chalong ).

Come to my house, in the UK, where my Thai wife produces a Thai banquet - the best food ever. And I love Thai street food.

Bangkok has thousands of great non-Thai restaurants in every direction, with great prices compared to the West. Most foodies fall in love Bangkok for that reason. Outside of Bangkok though, the customer base disappears.

Fried food has lots of Omega 6 (unhealthy, inflammatory fats). Recycled cooking oils. Sauces with MSG. That is why Asians age so fast. Also, they don't waste anything, they will happily fry up old or unwashed food for you; hygiene is questionable. Handling food and money at the same time. Better to buy food at a supermarket. That way you have control over your health/ageing.

Agree 100% Thai food is overrated. Theres a reason why there are not many Thai restaurants in a place like London. Vietnamese food is much better and probably the best in SE Asia

Why would anyone from the UK know anything about good food? England has some nice restaurants. All are Indian and Thai restaurants. A well known British food critic wrote a hilarious essay on why English food is mostly horrible.
