The Taylor Hall trade. The devs got some good prospects and we don’t mind a first round pick, containing another top prospect. On the other hand, Taylor Hall was terrible for the Coyotes, giving them close to no help last season, causing him to be let out into free agency without a single offer, and getting picked up by Buffalo. Even there, this season he hasn’t lived up to the hype. I don’t think he’ll ever be the same as the 2017 Taylor Hall.
I'm a Devils fan. Scott Gomez. He fit in perfectly to the Devils system. He had a couple decent seasons in new York but was never near the same player he was in New Jersey. Even when Gomez came back to New Jersey near the end of his career, he put up numbers he hadn't attained in years. At that time though, the Devils were going younger and rebuilding. He is one player I wish would have stayed his whole career in New Jersey. I believe he would have ended yup well over 1000 points and had his number retired there with the other greats had he stayed there his whole career. The guy had some Gretzky like vision and playmaking skills.
Ottawa won the Lehner trade hands down! Buffalo went no where when they had him (plus lost him in FA) and sure Colin White had a rough season last year but has become a very solid Top 6 Centre to help compliment Ottawa's growing forward core.
They also had Craig Anderson at the time, who may not be a top 5 goaltender but he was definitely solid in net. Having 3 starters is kind of pointless, you could argue they didn't keep the right one but Ottawa's problem surprisingly wasn't goaltending lol
Ryan o’reilly was treading water and mired in a losing culture in Buffalo, the blues sent a pair of bottom six forwards who had a small impact at the time and are no longer with the Sabre’s, an unproven prospect who has 14 points in 75 games with the Sabres, and two draft picks, who might turn out to be elite but if so, is several years away. The blues received their current captain and conn smyth recipient who helped them win a cup. That was one well timed trade.
@@maxrates another one was getting brayden schenn for jori lehtera. Every now and then Armstrong can pull off a magic trick, and absolutely fleece another GM.
@@xlr0gd205 oh I knew he was gonna be good. His only issue is consistency. He needs to carry that into next season, which should be doable considering he's more mature now. Good kid, glad he's doing well.
What is strange is that Domi DID perform. But when they saw that, Habs next year decided to make him play with the wrong players on the wrong line so he could be trade for 3 sticks and a jack-strap.
Extra info about the Subban trade: -Nashville traded one of the picks to the Flyers(which they used to pick Bobby Brink) for a pick they used to pick Egor Afanasyev(expect to see him in the next 1-2 years) -Jeremy Davies made his debut with the Preds midway through this season due to massive piles of injuries and he’s looked very solid from the minutes he’s played.
You need to go way back, but legendary Hab's GM Sam Pollock's, trading their 1970 1st pick and a prospect for the Golden Seals 1971 1st pick. Pollock's crystal ball was dead on, the Seals tanked, finishing last, and Pollock got exactly who he wanted; Guy Lafleur.
You should do a video on the most confusing trades in the NHL. Not necessarily the worst trades but once that didn’t really make sense at the time of them happening. Like Ryan O,Riley
Raycroft for Rask. Previous Calder award-winning goaltender who had underachieved for a couple of seasons for Boston traded for a then very young Tuukka Rask. Turned out pretty good for the Bruins in the long run.
Great vid rob!! Just some trades i can think off that were timed well. Phaneuf--> Ottawa ---> LA Kessel --> Pens --> Arizona (Allowed leafs to fully commit to rebuilding by trading their best defenceman and best forward , and they were able to get Marner at 4th that draft year, and Matthews at 1st the next year draft. Without this move maybe they finish with a few extra pts and missout on Matthews and Mitchy. Also it gave the hotdog man 2 cups and gave Reilly the icetime needed to develop into our Now #1 dman.)
I had to reach wayyyy back for this one. When Dave "Tiger" WIlliams was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 1980, they actually outperformed the other hot team at the moment: the Oilers!
I think the Ilya Kovalchuk trade away by the Thrashers was the best move in a long time, he went on for 3 more seasons with the Devils then went on mostly to the KHL and wasnt the same since.
Going way back to 1985 when Boston traded Barry Pedersen to Vancouver for Cam Neely and a 1st round pick. The Bruins used that pick on defenseman Glen Wesley. In Vancouver Cam Neely had scored 51 goals in 251 games. In Boston Neely became a great scorer, scoring 50+ goals in 3 different seasons and 344 goals in 525 games. If not for a bad knee injury, his stats would have been even better. Glen Wesley was a good goal scorer and top defenseman for Boston. Barry Pedersen had been a good player in Boston, scoring 39+ goals in his 1st three seasons. In Vancouver, he only topped 20 goals once.
Haven't seen the whole video yet, but I am reminded of John Cullen with Mario/Jagr and the Pens, and he was a big part of a deal for Ron Francis. Guess who won the trade! LOL
In the 2008-9 season, my team traded Thomas Walser for Damien Brunner in a one-on-one deal (it is not customary in Europe to do so) in the middle of the season... Brunner had 3 assists in 17 games before that trade, 36 games, 12g 14a for the remainder of the season with Zug and in the following five seasons was one of the best snipers with a Swiss passport and made the national team and later played for Detroit and the Devils... Walser had 20 games, 1 assist for our organisation and 37 gp, 4g 1a for Kloten... he soonly fell under the radar and played for Minor League teams only.
My friend is a huge Sharks fan and was so hyped about the Karlsson trade, but I knew once he was given that contract it was a mistake, especially since the very next season the Injuries started. I get the sharks wanted to keep Karlsson because they gave up so much, but they already had 7mil into an aging vlasic, and 8 mil pylon burns. But hear me out when the sharks are fully healthy on defense they are a monster, but now they have no production up top because Meier isn't looking like the 30 goal scorer he was signed to be.
The Summer of 2018 The Sabres get: Patrick Berglund (leaves the league after 23 more games) Vladimir Sobotka (leaves the league after 85 more games) Tage Thompson (15 goals and 11 assists in 104 games; Missed all but 1 game of the 2019-2020 season) 2019 1st round pick (#31 overall, Ryan Johnson, hasn't played in the NHL yet) 2021 2nd round pick (#49 overall, later traded) The Blues get: Ryan O'Reilly (Selke and Conn Smythe trophy winner with the Blues first ever Stanley Cup victory) It's easy to forget that Berglund and Sobotka were solid, 2-way, middle-6 players at the time of the trade, and Thompson was one of the Blues top young players in the NHL at the time of the trade.
I haven't even watched it yet but I know it'll be a great video I got so excited when this notification popped up keep up the great work man we love you
Kase trade wasn’t very good for either teams. Kase is the opposite of what the bruins need, while backes is a liability, axel Anderson won’t be ready for a while, and the pick wasn’t anything like people expected
Old school: Cam Neely from the Canucks to Boston for Barry Pederson. Neely was phenomenal as a Bruin while Pederson was washed up at 25 after several injuries.
Josh Anderson... having just watched Game 3 of the Habs v Vegas series, that's kinda funny to see him pop up here. Don't know where the series is gonna go but hoping for a Canadian Cup!!!
@@gimmick7389 If Habs definitely need sergachev because their left side is pretty bad, then Habs will definitely need a top6 left winger to "replace" Drouin. That trade was a fair deal for both of teams. Drouin is an excellent playmaker and he can score.
@@alexc1926 Drouin has 21 points in 32 games right now, he would be on pace for roughly 55-60 points in a full 82-game season. I haven't heard all that much about Drouin aside from people wondering if this could be his breakout year, he's not over-hyped he's been over-criticized by Hockey fans for the past few years and I'm even guilty of this. Sergachev would definitely help the Habs blue-line but if you have Sergachev instead of Drouin, who has that type of chemistry with Nick Suzuki that's helping him turn into a potential superstar center in the coming years? Drouin is probably the Habs' best playmaker right now and if he keeps this up could be just that for the next few seasons.
He is good otherwise he wouldn't play in the NHL, but he is not that elite defenseman anymore, he used to be and certainly not worth 11.5 million dollars a season...
2016, Rutherford get Trevor Daley from the Hawks for Rob Scuderi. Daley was a big part of at least one of the Pens back to back championships. Scuderi was sent down I believe
Bergevin is highly underrated. Gets a ton of flak but he winds up on the right side of the deal far more often than on the wrong side. For instance the Subban/Weber trade was universally panned at the time. People wanted his head. Looks a lot different now...
You have NO idea the emotional rollercoaster the Karlsson trade has been for a Sens fan over the years lmao. That has to be one of the greatest “bad trades” of all time.
Penguins fan here. Most perfectly timed move was firing Rutherford because he was about to trade Kris Letang... KRIS LETANG. Only the best defenseman in Penguins history. A almost yearly Norris contender. And a cornerstone to 4 Stanley cups
Sens fan here and im pretty mind blown about all the trades gm pierre dorrion has made they’re controversial at the time but looking back he’s a genius now hoping matt murray will bounce back😅
I have a future video suggestion, if you haven't already done this one, but what about each team's 'best team' year. Like what year did each team have their best overall team? Maybe for the last 40 years or something so you don't have to go so far back. What do you think?
I think that a trade of evander kane for M.Ekholm and C.Jarnkrok would be crazy benificial for both sjs and nsh. Offensively for nsh and saving a few $ for sjs and to move up burns to F, and Jarnkrok would be a nice addition to the 2nd line
Montreal Canadiens trade for Ken Dryden at the draft after he was drafted by the Boston Bruins, for Alex Campbell, Guy Allen and Paul Reid. Ken Dryden won 6 stanley cups in 9 yrs... Won 6 Veznia trophies, 1 Calder, 1 Conn Smythe trophy. He also sat out 1 yr during a contract dispute. Ken Dryden retired at age 32, because he could. None of the other 3 ever played an NHL game.
Penguins trading Jagr to Washington. Or penguins trading for Samuelson and Francis. Pens aquiring and trading Petr Nedved. Pens getting Ron Hainsey a couple of years ago and winning the cup. Pens getting Tom Barrasso from Buffalo and winning two cup with him.
My NYRs traded a Beloved Derrick Brassard for an Excellent but not yet proved Mika Zibanejad. Even though Brassard was an impact for Ottowa Senators eliminating the NYRs the following year, thereafter Brassard began a Decline, and, has been sent to different teams, since, while Mika Zibanejad has thrived for The NYRs. Thanks, Jeff Gorton
Going in the way back machine, Rick Martin to Los Angeles for a 3rd and a 1st. The Sabres management knew Martin sustained a potential career ended injury, and were right, as he only played 4 games in 2 seasons. The first round pick was used to select Tom Barrasso, who won the Vesina and Calder in his first season and later a pair of Cups in Pittsburgh. Would Yashin for Chara and Spezza be another?
The Wild haven't traded anyone that immediately fell off a cliff recently, but we've found players that immediately played better upon arrival (Dubnyk, Foligno, and Fiala come to mind)
The Sens once had a very highly regarded prospect named David Rundblad. He was projected as an elite offensive defenseman, but after only playing 24 games for Ottawa, the Sens saw holes in his game so they traded him to Arizona for Kyle Turris. Turris turned out to be one of Ottawa's better players while Rundblad (who was brought in to be Arizona's defenseman of the future) became a total bust.
Blues trading away Berglund and Sobotka for O’Reilly. Sobotka ended up in the minors and Berglund flat out quit, O’Reilly wins a Conn Smythe (for narrative sake, I left out the additional draft pick and Tage Thompson inclusion, but neither of those help the blues win the 2019 cup)
I'm not sure it's fair to critique players too harshly as playing in today's NHL with the COVID protocols and the overall state of our country, I think it has to be difficult both on and off the ice. Maybe and mostly off the ice? What the heck do I know? I'm not an NHL hockey player but I will say to every player, good for you to be able to play this great game at such a high pace!
You mentioned Duchene, but remember what kind of haul Sakic got from the trade? I mean 1 for 1 trade for Girard would have been sad as a Avalanche win for the trade, but noooope. Another notable piece is the draft pick, which ended up being Bowen Byram. Then Duchene went on to have an expensive contract and struggle.
