My Favorite breed. Everything you covered was exactly what I have experienced. Healthy and happy birds. Hens are sweet and roosters are kind, rational, intelligent, but protect the hens beautifully. Roosters do not defeather my hens like other roosters have done so I consider them especially "good with the girls". They are all gorgeous and look very attractive in a flock with other grey/red chickens like Lavender Orpintons, Silver Laced Wyandottes, etc.. When I get more chickens I will definitely order Plymouth Barred Rocks first because of there beauty, demeanor and heartiness

Great video my friend. We love our Barred Rock (we have 4 chickens in our mixed flock). We affectionately call her "Big Momma" as she is the boss, and is always first to greet us and to investigate everything. She is also the only one to just slowly look up at us like breaking the 3rd wall or something (like Jim from the Office). LOL

I've had Barred and White Rocks. Preferred the White. However, I am a first time owner of Brahmas, and pretty impressed with them. "The Brahma was generally considered the leading meat breed for the period of time from the mid-1850’s through about 1930 - some 70 plus years. As broilers, Brahma chicks were killed quite young, about 8-10 weeks of age. They made a most profitable roaster at 8 months, later than many breeds, but it was found that virgin cockerels were still tender as roasters at 12-13 months - making them competitive against capons. As a family fowl they were unequaled, and a large Brahma could feed a moderate-sized family."-Livestock Conservatory

I have 4 barred rock hens in pur flock of 6 hens and 1 rooster. They are excellent layers. The 2 sapphire gems seem to be good as well. We average 4 a day total and a lot are huge

These are the common chickens that backyards/small producers had in my part of rural Vermont in the 1960s-70s. We must have been part of the gene pool that the recovery of the breed sprang from! :) I had no notion that they were ever endangered.

Same! Roxanne is our Barred Rock and she’s a vocal gal! Every Barred Rock I’ve ever met has been loud, sassy, and quite aggressive with the other hens; however, Roxanne is very friendly with us, and most of the girls, and she’s super productive and VERY smart! She’s one half of our “lovebirds,” as her and our Rhode Island Red, Jade, are a bonded mating pair. Yep, that’s right, our two hens are in love😅! Roxanne has always acted like a rooster in that she keeps her eyes to the sky, alerts of any air predators in the area, and she’s always been one to run towards danger rather than away from it. She’s not the highest ranking in the flock, but she’s up around the third or fourth in like, her and Jade tend to swap; it’s hard to determine if Roxanne or Jade is the dominant one because Roxanne is the one who acts as the “rooster” in the relationship, but Jade has always gotten her own way😂, and Roxanne even shares treats with her🥰! It’s one of the most unique and cute relationships I’ve ever seen out of our animals.

I had 2 barred rock hens & 2 Brahms (3) months in a grow out metal pen with hardware cloth around it. A nighttime predator pushed the pen with enough force to pull 8 inch stake out of the ground. I lost both rocks and both Brahms. I am a very deflated new chicken mom. I just put the four outside (the garage) 3 weeks ago. Right now im just not ready to do the heat plate and cleaning out a brooder everyday and start all over.

Hi! Can you explain how to tell the difference between the heritage barred rock and the production strain? If I were to buy some, how would I know which one I’m getting? Also, you don’t mention the bantam version of the barred rock. Are they healthy, good layers and not too broody? Thank you 😊

Are newly hatched chicks auto sexing for this breed? I had read that they were but I didn't see any mention of it in the video

Yes they are. From what I hear you need to make sure you get them from a reputable breeder. is It makes the traits you see between a cockerel vs pullet more reliable. For more info check out this article I found: www.backyardchickens.com/threads/sight-sexing-barred-plymouth-rock-chicks-at-hatch.798635/
