I mean I wanted some inspiration about my group hug deck so I watched his decktec about his group hug deck... It just got out everyones lands from their deck and destroyed all lands... I didnt know how many mass land destruction spells there were until DJ's deck was shown haha. I honestly dont think he is far off Craig when DJ is in the mood for a rough game 😂

Important note about the knowledge pool teferi lock that many players miss. Knowledge pool says specifically "from your HAND" you can still cast your Commander. Also importantly for decks like Karador, Muldrotha, Kess (there might be others but I can't think of them off of the top of my head) you can cast cards from your graveyard. If you have an answer in your graveyard you have access to it.

I had a mass land destruction happen last weekend. One player was able to search my library (I'm playing a Windgrace deck btw) and played Reshape the Earth for free. He had 15 lands at this point, which was like turn 5. On my turn I cycled Decree of Annihilation, because he forced my hand. However, my wife played Heroic Intervention and it was such a fantastic play. I was able to recover somewhat quicker than most with my lands matters deck. The other two players were not so lucky. My wife on the other hand took the game easily at that point. Nobody could ever catch up. It was so fun. Haha!

I really love these episodes with DJ. The best part of this episode was the one with replacement effects for carddraw for drawing more cards. But the rest of the episode reads more like how to break the social contract rather than how to add great synergies to your deck. So just as a little feedback. It would be nice to see more syneries that don't break the social contract :)

Command Zone: you do cast the first spell that goes into the knowledge pool. You should should make a disclaimer. This synergy works when you lock someone out with a card like curse of exhaustion.

For the Disk Synergy: Throw in a Mycosynth lattice to prevent the enemy from getting rid of your Indestructible by destroying lands.

Aye, this be a mean one that my play group tends to forget about. I have also swiped someone's entire board with hellkite tyrant combined with thos combo before nuking the board. Probably one of the coolest moments I have ever had with my Daretti deck.

So for the second set of synergies (TeferiPool) you can also use Possibility Storm if you happen to be in red. Additionally, if you have a method of breaking parity on-board, such as a planeswalker, a Rule of Law effect works with both Pool and P. Storm.

Hey @The Command Zone There is another synergy for the Sylvan Library + Abundance and that is Sylvan Library + Teferi's Ageless Insight. You always draw keep 3 cards and can dig 5 deep every turn AND have card selection so you can decide which one you want rather than the randomness of Abundance. But both are pretty great!

Bloodchief Ascension also synergizes with Mindcrank. And if you hit them for any damage, once Bloodchief is 'online', then so long as you don't choose to have them NOT mill, they will either die from damage, or mill out.

My favorite synergy is one that I heavily use in my Lord Windgrace and Gitrog decks and that is Splendid Reclamation for mass return or Crucible of Lands (and friends) for targeted return of lands that hit the graveyard. I've seen you Josh push this recently with Fetch lands, but there are ways to take this concept even further by playing Squandered Resources and Rain of Filth essentially doubling your mana, Constant Mists to blank everyone's combat step, Overlaid Terrain becomes the most efficient mana doubler. There's a lot of really strong effects you can get out of these synergies that I find most people aren't giving proper consideration to.

Probably obvious to say, but the Sylvan Library trick works with any draw replacement effect. Personal favorite would have to be Underrealm Lich(4BG), replace draw with "look at top 3 cards, put 1 in hand, put 2 in grave" can also pay 4 life to give it indestructible. Works amazing in anything with grave synergies like Gitrog Monster aswell... also tiny upside for the draw replacement effects, not that it hardly ever comes up, but it does make you immune to mill death since you are no longer able to "draw" when you have no cards remaining XD

Worth noting: Karn the Great Creator's -2 works really well with the new Boros Commander deck. Exile an artifact for 2 token copies, then -2 and put the original in your hand.

The Maralen / OP Agent lock doesn't only let you tutor their decks, also stops your opponents from drawing cards. Forever. Once this lock hits the board, your opponents can only stop it with the cards they have in hand right now. And every turn, you get to steal more protection for it. There's a reason it's a pretty powerful lock in competitive stax decks, I run it in my Tayam list.

I actually played in a Commander game once where one of my opponents cast Armageddon while I had both Smothering Tithe and Anointed Procession on the battlefield doubling my Treasure token output, it was great!

I play Muldrotha and I have many times done the Sylvan Library trick, but with Underrealm Lich instead of Abundance ─ that's essentially draw 9 per turn. Feels good.

One of my favorite rules for tournament play is that, if you Brainstorm during your upkeep and have Sylvan Library, you are required to call a judge to look at your hand while you do this.

there's also "you can't have turns". Cast mindslaver, cast lethal vapors. Gain control of target player's turn. during their turn, have them activate the ability of lethal vapors (skip your next turn: destroy lethal vapors). In response, have that opponent activate the ability another 10,000 times. They never get another turn again.

One that I just discovered recently is isochron scepter and strionic resonator. If you have a deck that wants both, such as a mono blue wizard deck with both ETBs and a lot of instants, you may incidentally run both already. You can copy the imprint ability putting two spells under the scepter. If those two spells are Counterspell and Dramatic Reversal (again two spells you would likely already run) you can cast them both with the scepter repeatable. With at least 2 mana in mana rocks, you can cast both to counter a spell and untap the scepter to do it again. Effectively this locks out any spell you want besides those that are uncounterable. (See Rule 607.3)

"To the listeners" answer: Necroptence and Venser's Journal, in a Karlov deck. Also, military shore leave and lots of money to freely spend on cards, are a good life synergy that can lead players to have more deck test time and the access to that nearly perfect mana base. One more, Blackblade Reforged and Balath the red Goad commander with the white background that makes Balath get 2 +1/+1 counters each turn. All opponents must attack, but not you.

A good, cheap response to hull breacher is crafty cutpurse. While you don’t have any cards, you take all the tokens from them that they would make that turn. If you can repeatedly blink it every turn, it will continue to steal all the treasures.

Abundance also stops you from losing to an empty library because it replaces all draws, and to lose you must draw into an empty library.

Nice to see DJ as a guest again. Notion Thief, et al. effects can synergize with Teferi's Puzzle Box that when timed right can steal your opponent's draw phase. Zur's Weirding is Muldrotha's bestfriend. Opposition Agent can be a good search option for Wishclaw Talisman.

My Muldrotha Deck has both Narset and Hullbreacher in there. No wheels though, but they're more in there to punish card draw. The deck in general functions by slowly grinding the opponent down.

For the spikes out there, Drannith Magistrate + Possibility Storm is a nice lock that costs about 2.50 and Drannith Magistrate + Uba Mask works too. For the casuals, Syr Konrad + Living Death is a really fun synergy and if you land it it costs 10 mana so no one can be salty about it

If you are going to run the darksteel forge / nevs disk combo. Make sure you toss in mycosynth lattice as well. All permanents are now artifacts. So when you wrath, you also blow up the opponents lands / creatures, basically they start at turn one. So even if they have a swords or a bounce answer it’s very unlikely they will be able to ever afford the casting cost to play it considering when they play a land and pass the turn you blow it up on your turn.

One of my favorite synergies is ether the wanderer planeswalker or blessed sanctuary, which prevents damage, and command the dreadhord. Then just choose all the creatures that can be used from all graveyards then the damage preventers prevent the damage. If it said loses life it wouldn't work but it says deals damage so it oddly works.

I have Zur’s Weirding in my Muldrotha deck! Muldrotha let’s me pull the things my opponents put in my graveyard back out so it doesn’t affect me as much. It’s also a way for me to check my opponents hands for counters before playing my combo out. Love this card!

On the topic of Teferi + things to force your opponents to cast something else instead, Possibility Storm works with them as well. Also, if you have the Knowledge Pool but no Teferi, there are a number of cards that limit the number of spells people can play per turn, so they cast the first spell but can't cast the second because they can only play one per turn.

I love the zur's weirding combo, its one of the weirdest synergies, but I love things like this. I built an entire deck based around it helped by tasigur. Its a really strong one, and I love playing it but I dont get to play it often because its mean.

One of my favorite cards to synergise with is Fertilid. It's a surprisingly flexible card for what seems like such a boring design. During one of my most recent games, I played Fertilid into Simic Ascendancy. This was already an incredibly powerful combo, but then I combined that with a Seedborn Muse and went from a 4 counter Ascendancy to 19 in a single round of the table. I could have won!... if I didn't forget that the "win the game" trigger only enters the stack if you already have 20 counters.

How Josh described his usage of Jolrael, Empress of Beasts is exactly what I did to my brother in one game years ago simply because he was bullying a player he played against in a previous game. At the time people were surprised I Exiled Avacyn Angel of hope when I casted Final Judgment but a lesson learn: Commander is about having fun not grudges.

Very important thing that should be addressed in the Teferi Pool combo, ESPECIALLY by a Commander channel, is that Commanders aren't stopped by it. I've had a net decker in my area just blindly play the comco and think the game was over, and it took quite some time to explain why "No, you didn't just autowin with two cards, there's a reason neither is banned". Of course, abilities can also be played.

I actually think you guys missed a pretty big one: flicker/blink + ETB effects. Some of the most difficult to counter decks I've played against in the last couple of years work by getting small value cards in play, then repeating that value until you have an overwhelming advantage. As an example, Emiel, the unicorn from jumpstart that can blink other creatures. Many times someone will play a spell that goes under the radar, like Wood Elves (ETB: search out a forest). You don't think about it at the time; it's a Rampant Growth, who's going to counter that? Then, Emiel hits the table, and suddenly that wood elves is increasing the available resources by up to 50% each turn. Hint: exponential growth = powerful. What's insidious about blink effects, particularly those on permanents, is that they occur at instant speed, so once the card is on the battlefield, you can't stop it really b/c they can simply do the blink in response to whatever effect you are using to remove it. Also, usually, they can blink targets to prevent targeted removal from working, and use delayed triggers (blinks that return on end step, for example) to get around board wipes. Finally, on the _really_ mean side, blinks that set up delayed triggers are one of the few ways to _permanently_ remove a commander from the game, if the player who is the victim doesn't properly understand how it works. You know what's not fun? Trying to play your build-around commander deck --- without the commander.

It That betrays + All Is Dust (in a colorless deck) = all their stuff is yours now, they only have lands, and if you have a haste enabler, you swing for lethal.

While talking about Nevinyrral's Disk + Darksteel Forge, a good include to push the synergie over the edge is Mycosynth Lattice. With this the opponents will just concede and you'll have no friends. (Not actually true, the times I got this combo out in my Kozilek deck my opponents just asked to stard the next one) Also Nekusar, the Mindrazer with Helm of the Ghastlord means your opponents will never be able to draw any card.

Another one for the Mycosinth Lattice "armageddon" is actually OG Karn, Silver Golem. Since you can pay 1 to make any non-creature artifact into an artifact creature with P/T equal to its CMC, and Lattice turns all lands into artifacts, Karn, Silver Golem allows you to spend 1 mana to blow up 1 land. While this isn't as mana-efficient or powerful as overloading Vandalblast, it is another way to get rid of all your opponents' lands while keeping yours in play. My friends may or may not hate my mono-red Daretti deck....

Hey guys, nice video as always. I'd just like to add some value to the "you dont need permanents" synergy because I do play with a kaalia as commander and I put Avacyn in play so I can "create" a win condition with a armageddon or decree of annihilation (by cycling) or obliterate. So this can take out of the game not only permanents but also the main source of mana. I do also have in my deck the new card cosmic intervention, so I can destroy the battlefiel and protect my own game. Nice work of yours from command zone, brazilian lovers of MTG enjoy your canal. Ive gotten Fall of the Thran off and kept all my lands with Teferi's Protection. The table hated me for it but I would absolutely do it again.

What I like to do is have Shalai and Avacyn on the field, at the same time. It's not an instant win, but it's just so powerful and there's very little someone can do. Farewell exists now, and it's one of the few solutions to Hexproof + Indestructible on everything.

First off great video, loved the discussion and your guy's back and forth was great. Now I'm not sure it's a "synergy" and not a "combo" but based on the description you gave I'm surprised Jodah/fist of suns and morophon wasn't on the list? It's essentially 1/2 an omniscience in the command zone for tribal themes and that's a pretty cool synergy that won't necessarily win the game on the spot but it's pretty great value.

Agreed. A combo doesn't have to be an infinite, instant-win loop to be a combo. "Synergy" is a spectrum, with those sorts of combos residing at the extreme maximum end of it.

My playgroup isn't a fan of shimmer + stormtide leviathan (call island for shimmer). You can also use other cards that change land types (urborg, blood moon, etc). Translation for those who don't want to look it up, all lands gain phasing.

My favorite is Brisela, Voice of Nightmares + Gaddock Teeg. I call it "let's play fair magic", as I stack ways to further oppress people's creatures.

Curiosity or Opidian's Eye plus creatures that damage all opponents can also draw 3. Muldrotha and flashback decks also are asymmetric with Zur's Weirding.

Nonland permanent boardwipe into "Kaervek, the Spiteful" and "Living Plane" is also a really funny combo: Noone has lands, but you have a 3/2 legendary creature. This combo will definitely generate a load of spite.

I would also say vedalken orrery, and seedborn muse is an amazing synergy. Play stuff at instant speed, untapped your lqnds on your opponents turns

One of my favourites: Enchanted evening + auratog + aura thief, this is in my tuvasa enchantress. On top of that we also use Enchanted evening + calming verse because being a monster is fun

On the Knowledge Pool synergy, I have an entire deck built around that 'synergy', with a wider Artifact control theme. It also contains Karn, the Great Creator + Mycosynth Lattice. I agree that on paper they look like powerful 'synergies' but if you play that deck, you're playing it like a combo. You usually overload a Cyclonic Rift to empty the board and then cast Lavinia/Teferis + the Pool and explain what's happening. The majority of the time, people recognise the lock and concede, then you put the deck away for 3 weeks. I would not play it against anyone who wouldn't be interested in doing so, but I have also spent a long time tuning my build that doesn't contain Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, etc. I'm trying to play the fairest possible version of an admittedly demoralising lock. Edit: This was posted before I got to the Karn+Lattice discussion, but they missed that Karn's -2 does actually grab things from Exile so the ability is not actually dead. I've been able to get many lock pieces from exile with Karn.

Love this topic. As a question and a suggestion, are you guys working on an Interaction episode? I use the draw, ramp, removal and wipe suggestions as guidelines for making my decks- but I've noticed that that leaves tutors, recursion, clone and copy effects, etc.. as a toss-up category. Clearly, this stuff is waaay sensitive to your pod/playgroup, but I know you guys have some tried and true wisdom, and I'd love to hear you talk on this subject.
