On a tangent here, I was a bit concerned when Adele lost her weight it would be detrimental to her voice. But I can't promote being overweight, so it is a bit of a conundrum. Ultimately Adele is _rollin' in the cash... deep_ so she doesn't need to care and I'm happy for her.
I met Michelle Phillips when I was a security guard. The team I led at the time had stopped an aggressive fan from trying to follow her from her town-car into a hotel. She thanked me for my team's professionalism. The letter of recommendation she gave the company got all of us a raise. So needless to say, I love her!
My 16 year old daughter came to me so excited. She heard a "new" band The Mama's and Papas.Heard the exact same words from a young co-worker a month ago about a new group called McFleetwood. I laughed my head off....priceless. I guess the music is timeless.
32 years a go some young guys at work said have you herd that new song "Bohemian Rhapsody" by that new group Queen, I said kids the Band Queen was started when I Was just born and was still very small when that song came out and I have heard it 100's of times in my life where have you been? We saw it in that "Wayne's World" movie last night.
Mama Cass is such an icon in so many ways. Her voice being a big one (no pun intended)! She had such a powerful and full sounding lower range. One of the best alto singers.
@@reubenblanco3021 Who are you talking to? Mad at me because I picked on Peanut Butter (easy to spread)? She helped write songs, yay. She is still a horrible person.
Let's not forget that John and Michelle had a daughter, Chynna, who was very successful with Brian Wilson's two daughters in the group Wilson Phillips in the early 90s.
I saw them at a country fair, about ten years ago... singing to recorded music... Carnie the best singer, Wendy the second best... Chynna the best looking, not as good of a singer..
My mom passed away in 2018 a few days before her 66 birthday. Growing up I didn’t really like her music, except for California dreaming. I always really liked that song. In the years she’s been gone, I’ve found a new appreciation for her taste in music. I always find myself listening to something and it brings me back to my childhood where she’s playing the exact song. I miss you, mom. I love you and you had great taste in music.
I saw an interview with Dennis Doherty a long time after they broke up. He said that when the record label they were on was bought quite a few years after the break up the accountants found that had not been paid all the royalties coming to them. The new company paid it to them. He said in hindsight it was fortunate. The money was enough that he could live comfortably for the rest of his life and if he had gotten it when he should have it would all have gone up his nose and in his arm.
The group was on ABC/Dunhill, which, if memory serves, was bought by MCA circa 1979-1980. The record business is such a sleazy, ripoff industry; glad to hear of a company that acted honorably!
Dear Cass Elliot. Bless her heart, she took all of that on the chin with style and grace, all for the benefit of the group. She deserved so much more. I have no doubt that the Angels in heaven were happy to receive her,for she had a voice that could reign in their choir.
I'm guessing she had a very big heart, just saying. Great powerful singer. I was in high school when their first record came out. Played it over and over.
California Dreamin’ was always my favourite song of theirs. I had the record as a little girl and used to play it over and over, I just loved the harmonies in it…
Sometimes forgotten about this quartet is their role in organizing the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, which brought to greater public awareness such performers as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding and a host of others. We can all be grateful for that part of their legacy.
Although Phillips’ pivotal role in the organization of the Monterey Pop Festival is often not mentioned, I actually think it is the main reason the Mamas and the Papas are remembered as much as they are. In the past, I could not understand why they had not been relegated to the black hole of historical oblivion, like almost everything and everyone is. They seemed so trivial, eminently forgettable. Cass was an interesting personality, but not, in my view, enough. But when I read about Phillips’ work putting together the genuinely historical Monterey Pop, it made sense he would be remembered, along with his group.
❤Back in the summer the year that album came out, my family and I took a summer vacation and the songs on that album played the soundtrack in my mind - also my older brother Bill was alive and there with us!😎💖💚🖤💯💥👍🤍thanks for the memories🤍!
Yes, Michelle's look is something else, she just immediately jumps to the forefront on every picture. Radiant beauty. No wonder everyone else paled into insignificance.
People forget that mama's and papa's were also a big part of organizing the monterey pop festival in '67 that featured the breakout of janis joplin. You can see cass elliots face during joplins performance and she's seriously blown away by her voice...
I used to love the Mama’s and the Papa’s and my favorites songs were Monday Monday and Baby it’s Cold Outside. Thanks for the memories. I’m a 1960’s-1970’s girl, a “baby-boomer”. 🦄🦋☮️🇺🇸🇹🇨🏴🇬🇧😊💜🖤📮😎. 10:13
The problem with marrying women who look like a young Michelle Phillips is that they constantly get new offers, some of which may be better than yours.
No, nope, she's just a terrible person. I saw the interview on the canyon movie, she has no remorse and thinks it's all very entertaining. It's just what was expected of her, saying something like "it wasn't the first time so it wasn't that much of a shock" can you imagine being married and devoted to something like that?
"Most scandalous"? Arguable, though the abuse of Mackenzie may put them over the top. Never heard about the incest, but I did hear that she was passed around like an hors d'oeurve tray at Hollywood parties, in which several big-name rock musicians had their way with her when she was underage. "Monday, Monday" was my fave, but Mama Cass' solo work beats all, particularly her song "Make Your Own Kind of Music," in which her vocal range is on full display.
There was no "abuse". her claim that her father "F'd" her repeatedly is absurd. Heroin addicts don't "F". It's literally the last thing on their mind, and "of course" that accusation didn't surface until after he was dead and couldn't defend it. Don't be so gullible...... she had no income, was broke and a druggie, and needed a payday..... and of course every feminist talk show was happy to give her a check.
@@mj.lI think meaning "was she a willing party" no of course not legally and it's just morally sickening ! As a father it disturbs me to the core and makes me feel rage .
Cass Elliott will always be my favourite from the Mamas and Papas. She had the best singing voice out of all of them and the band success was due to her in my opinion.
Well. And the same band behind all the beach boys, the rhonnettes, Frankie vallie and quite a few post beatles hits to name a few did all their studio work.
Cass Elliot introduced Nash to Crosby and Stills and Diltz to Burden. She knew everyone, and had a tremendous influence on what was still a relatively new art form.
@@davidferrara1105 her solo career went nowhere I think because she was mentally ill and not attractive. She was kind of traumatized from et mama and papas... I think she was kind of finished as a human almost it seems. Her bandmates might have been absolute evil but the less talented people around the talented person .. often there's some reason why they need too exist. Talented people need people to exploit them quite often or you'd never hear of them.
I don't know, she _was_ mediocre compared to the Mamma... do I detect a hint of jealousy? Anyway, I don't think the harmonies and the overall sound would work if you had two Cass like singers.
In 1987, I had a girlfriend, who lived in for a while, who had traveled with The Mommas and Poppas, and before that when there were The Mugwumps. She had also spent an internship at the Smithsonian in DC. She was interesting but very crazy and ultimately dangerous. Getting her out of my life was difficult and traumatic to a degree because she was vengeful.
Twelve-Thirty, Monday Monday and Cal Dreaming. Loved the group. Saw Denny give his "Almost True Story of The Mamas and The Papas" recital at the Chester Playhouse Theatre here in Nova Scotia too many years ago. A Halifax boy, he came home and is buried in Sackville's Gates of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville being a suburb of the city of Halifax. RIP, Denny.
Mamma cass was the whole band. She’s one of the best singers of the 60’s and she’s got a charming personality. John Phillips was a great songwriter but he was a sick, disgusting, and evil man. Michelle gives me bad vibes. She always seemed stuck up and full of herself. She wasn’t all that talented either. The affairs and manipulative behavior make me think she craved attention.
Michelle didn't need to crave attention, she had it effortlessly. She's one of the most beautiful women of the '60s (and beyond), and simply enjoyed the power it gave her. Of course such women are full of themselves, it's only natural.
Oh don't be so hard on John. He just loved beautiful women. So some of them were related to him, we're all related to each other to some degree. You go back a few generations we all have common ancestors. So he was himself the common ancestor in this case, what's the big deal? Lol.
Hey Nostalgic Nick - what's your other channel name, please? They were a bit before my time, but I know of them. I used to think Michelle was so pretty and reminded me of some of the hippies I saw as a little kid in the early 70s lol The band was broken up before I even turned 5 so I only heard the standard two usual songs, which I liked enough to listen to them.
I think it's so sad and tragic what happened to Mama Cass you could hear it in her emotions and her feelings when she saying she was a really lonely person
Denny Doherty was actually stabbed in the chest by a strange fan woman, you can actually see the 4 tapes in a square around his chest without a shirt on. Mama Cass she played in one episode of HR Pufnstuf as a singing queen witch with Witchiepoo, and many other witches. And also she played in the New Scooby Doo movies as well who ran her own candy factory with 2 green globs.
i heard the tail end of a song that blew me away. didn't catch the band's name. i listened for weeks on my transistor radio for the song to come back on... seldom heard as beautiful song as 'california dreaming'... perfect. (fifty years later, i find out the song was written my barry mcguire!)
Denny Doherty went on working on a children's show in the 90s called Theodore Tugboat as it was set in Halifax (where he was raised). And it was very popular on CBC in Canada and PBS Kids in America as this show ran in 1993 till 2001.
I heard of them through my mother. But I wasn't born yet when they came along. I tried listening to them. But I'm sorry, I don't care for their music or singing. My mother loves them however. Thanks for sharing a piece of history though @DoYouRemember?.
They were my favorite group growing up, with Cass Elliott as the star ⭐️, still is today. Creech Alley would be one of my favorites, but Cass’s solos speak for themselves.
Fun Fact: The "traditional cowboy song," "Me & My Uncle," covered by the Grateful Dead of course, but also by Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, & others, was written by a John Phillips so drunk after a Judy Collins show that he didn't recall having written it, and had to be told. It's said his memory of writing the song improved w/each new royalty check. Twisted, messed-up man -- but one hell of a songwriter. Such is genius, sometimes.
My favorite band from that era. Cass had a voice that was so beautiful. She wasn’t as celebrated as I thought she should have been. The music lives on though. That was a great time for music!
There are some great anecdotes in the biography of Gene Clark by John Einarson “Mr. Tambourine Man” about his interactions with Michelle Phillips. Definitely a part of rock n roll history from that era.
I heard a story one time on VH1 behind the music about the Mamas and the Papas , the story was that one reason John Phillips did not want Cass Elliot in the group was because her voice just was not right , just didn't quite fit in with the others , but one night after they had been playing, Cass got hit on the head by something a light fixture or something , she was all right but the next time she sang with the group her voice harmonized perfectly with the rest of the group.
Always loved them, and played them around my kid who loves them to. CREEQUE ALLEY and STRAIGHT SHOOTER were my faves. The whole McKenzie Phillipes thing really put a damper on my love of the band tho.
What is it about big hats that makes them impossible for rock stars to ignore? Stevie Nicks started wearing giant hats too, and big floppy berets. Even Tom Petty got hooked for a while.
Mama Cass was also in the first Midnight Special episode, hosted by John Denver. They sing a duet to "Leaving on a Jet-plane", you can find it here on RU-vid.
One of John Phillips' best songs is not even in the official Mamas and Papas catalog - "If You're Going To San Francisco" - sung by Scott McKenzie, with John Phillips providing the guitar.
One of my absolute favorite groups of all time. Scandle surrounded nearly every group and movie star of the 60s. The sad part is they all died so young except for Michelle. Cass was my favorite...with group and without!
"Scandle surrounded nearly every group and movie star of the 60s." It's not just the 60s and one of the reasons I never wanted to become a professional musician. I'd get offers and turn them down. It's harder work than people think it is and you're under a lot of pressure.
California Dreaming my parents moved from California 1980 and I would listen to that song everyday dreaming without the back in California again being 14 years old you can't make your choices so so I had to move from California to all I ever did was dream about going back
The sixty's was a big influence on me, as a kid who wanted to play guitar, sing, write songs.. The Beach Boys in the summer of 63, and the Beatles where what fueled my desire.. You could not ignore the mommas and the papas at the time.. California Dream'in was a huge song.. I never got past v.f.w.'s and dive bars... The 21 songs I wrote on you tube are the descendants of the music i grew up with, and playing country in the 80's.. I am sitting on a fortune in song lyrics, and don't know any one.. predivorce paranoia, the love of satin, super natural woman, girls weren't design to pump iron.. Are a testimate to the power of that music.. 21 songs i wrote on you tube, thousands of ideas in note books.. I could never get my muse.. Michell, was what boys dreams are made of..
No matter how informative the subject,I can NEVER get through an entire segment of this "persons" voice. It's so creepy and unnerving. I'd rather hear fingernails scratches across a very dry chalkboard.
