The Most Scenic Trail In Maryland! - The Billy Goat Trail and Great Falls of the Potomac

DO THIS HIKE! Located just outside of Washington DC, exists the most popular trail in Maryland, and for good reason. Here you have the third most powerful waterfall in the United States, leading into a sheer rocky gorge as the Potomac River crashes over the fall line on its way to the Chesapeake Bay. River Islands thrust out from the water like miniature mountains, speckled with grizzled pines that seem to grow out of bare rock. The area teams with bird species of all types and unique flora and fauna. The setting felt utterly out of place in Eastern Maryland and more attuned to a western landscape. Just downstream of the Great Falls begins the Billy Goat Trail which hugs the rivers edge, weaving up, over, and around ancient weathered boulders. Seasonal vernal pools hotbeds of amphibian life can be seen from the trail as well as many wildflowers and unique plant species. This trail has it all. Views, wildlife, unique ecosystem, and ease of accessibility. As a result the trail is VERY popular. This trail is considered a rock scramble with one technical section - the traverse - but is certainly manageable for even the fairly inexperienced hiker. I simply LOVED this trail and look forward to seeing it again during a different season.

Wow! Such a beautiful video. At my age those rock scrambles are too risky so it was wonderful to do this hike through your eyes. Thanks so much for sharing.

Try to go off peak hours, it does get crowded, but it's awesome 😎! Happy hiking my friend, perhaps our paths will cross some day soon.

I have hiked the Billy Goat Trail 4 times in the last month and a half and let me tell you this is the best and most challenging hike my wife and I have done. I can't get enough of this trail. The last time we did it we did it for time and didn't stop. It is appoximately 2 miles of straight rock scramble and we generally get 5.5 miles of hiking all together with this hike. I live two hours away and crave having this place closer to home. If you are ever near by this trail is an absolute must!!!! The views are priceless.

Spectacular video! I found your channel from Hiker Dude Dad's recommendation and I'm so glad I found it. I'm fairly local to the hikes you have done so it's great to see places I've been and places I'd like to see. You do a wonderful job with your filming, editing, narration, and music. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. I've been to Great Falls on several occasions but haven't hiked the Billy Goat Trail. I have done some whitewater kayaking further down the river at Little Falls. I definitely have to do that rock scramble, it looks awesome.

Walter, you have such amazing content and have a library of quality episodes. It is unfathomable that you don't have more subs. It's terrible, but I have to say it's a great encouragement to me to keep creating for my own artistic expression and video journaling mission. You're so close! I hope you hit 1000 by the new year! Peace & Prayers.

So kind of you to say that, I admit I have been frustrated by the slow growth of the channel, but I think you are correct in your assesment that you really need to create these videos for your own personal reasons - whatever they may be - and the subscribers, likes, and views are a bonus. Thank you so much for your encouragement, I have been dealing with some very painful issues in my personal life recently, and documenting my hikes is one of the few things that allow me to really find personal fullfilment, and inner peace at this time. I would be remiss to say that another part of youtube that truly has been a blessing has been meeting the aquaintance of so many amazing fellow creators and subscribers and I am grateful that our paths have crossed here on the platform. Peace and Prayers to you as well.

How long is the Billie Goat Trail? Does it start in or near Georgetown DC? And is there any transit systems nearby?
@WALTERZOLNA
@WALTERZOLNA 2 года назад
The trail itself if you follow the route I took was about 3.5 miles, though you could extend it to about 5. I can not rate this trail any higher it is an awesome adventure. Unfortunately I am from Philadelphia and am not very familiar with DC at all. The trail is adjacent to the Great Falls of the Potamac. I could not answer your questions regarding accessibility and proximity. Lots of information available online however.... Best of luck in your adventures my friend!
