I’ve had the gen 4 2.0 gr sport touring since July 2022 and it’s a fantastic car. People saying that this is only a car for the elderly are missing out. I had an Octavia vrs before this and the Corolla is definitely the quicker car in real world driving, largely because of the immediate torque from the hybrid engine compared with the turbo lag in the Octavia. It’s also practically bomb proof in terms of reliability and very well equipped for the price. Seemingly gen 5 is even better.
I’ve just ordered 1.8L Fifth generation. Test drove 2L also. The extra power upgrade for the 1.8 means it has plenty of umph, you don’t really need the 2L tbh.
Enjoyed this review immensely as an owner of the first generation Touring Sports with the two litre engine and Excel trim. After 46,500 miles and three and a half years it has averaged 53mpg overall- the most economical vehicle I have ever owned. It's possible to achieve 60mpg (UK) without too much bother on rural or town routes, and even on a 70mph cruise on the motorway it will return 48-50 mpg. Very happy with it- only a dud 12 volt battery a few months ago spoiled the 100% reliability record, though I think this is a fairly common occurrence nowadays with a lot of cars. Would I buy another? Yup.
Prefer the 16 inch tires and wheels over 18 for better ride, better MPG, lower cost to replace tires, better protection to suspension against potholes.
This Corolla still looks so striking to me. It's such a good looking car even in Estate bodystyle. Plus the usual Toyota attributes of excellent build quality, reliability and the smooth and economical hybrid drivetrain. A very appealing package.
It's crazy what sound the 18 inchers let out vs. what 16" wheels sound like, both in the inside as well as outside the car. I wonder if downsizing will ever happen in this aspect. If you buy the top spec, you always get the 18s, even if you wanted the quiet and comfortable 16s. With certain designs, like black or gun metal, even 16s can look good. And of course they're better for the environment... less consumption, dust flying from ground (matters in the Nordics) ;)
My mum brought a Corolla Tourer last year with 18's, brought 16s from the dealer and sold the 18s and tyres separately on ebay. It makes a huge difference to comfort and road noise.
I really like this refined Corolla (I prefer the hatchback rather than the touring) and it promises astonishing drives in real day driving. The only thing that disappoints me is the outdated steering wheel design. My opinion is that it could have the Yaris's design with more rounded shape in the center. ♥️
The digital driver's display looks great. Having the display in its own binnacle is much more elegant imo than the wide-screen solutions adopted by many automakers today.

This is one of the most exciting vehicles in the world. Built for amazing trips from A to B for people that don't want the hassle of the latest technologies, too much power, advanced chassis, and firm sport suspension. Toyota makes the best vehicles for the typical new car buyer, old people!
So the car has all the latest driving assistance technologies that you have to pay extra for on virtually all other manufacturers. Toyota also offer a ten year warranty, I tell you the excitement of my Alfa Romeo soon ran out after a £2000 repair bill and being stranded on the side of the road with my kids!
@@da911beast Starting off with less money, feeling "poor" is unfortunate, but beyond a certain extent it becomes an excuse. I was pretty much broke after bills and putting what little's left into investments, did this for over 10 years (wouldn't have needed this long if I was more talented), now I live a relatively comfortable life. What we do when facing constant adversity really counts.
@da911beast & @swong6757… so not spending thousands of euros on a car with the latest tech, better chassis and power just to drive from red traffic light to red traffic light, drop the kids at friends/sport, go visit family … and drive a real trip every other month at best… that classify me as « poor »? Cars are not assets, they are liabilities… the typically poor behaviour I see the most is people spending too much on a thing that makes them feel rich. And if you’re passionate about sport cars, you should just not comment on a video about the corolla, it’s just not the place for your passion 😊
Thank you for this review! I have been trawling both youtube and google for proper 2023 corolla reviews for a weeks, and waiting for the Autogefühl review especially. Gonna order a 2.0l executive corolla soon and this review makes me even more certain that I'm making the right choice. Thanks again! Great review!
Thanks for this review Thomas. Have you considered a Japan holiday where you can try out some Japan exclusive cars? I think that it will be very interesting to see your impressions and hopefully it will get you lots of views.
Nice review, I love my touring sports hybrid for the comfy seating, fuel economy and great visibility for my short height. And the TSS being standard across the range makes even the entry level worthwhile too for effortlessly cruising!
Thomas, as always your way of reviewing a car is top. Just saw a review from a Dutch reviewer. Cant compare it with yours. Have fun with all the coming tests in 2024. Willem, The Netherlands
Thanks, Thomas. Excellent review as always. I have the 2023 Touring Sport 1.8 Design on order (6 months waiting list, apparently!) I currently have the Icon Tech version of the same car which I purchased 2 and a half years ago. Your review at the time was influential in me making my decision to choose it. It's been 100% reliable of course, and achieves 50.8 mpg in summer, dropping to 58.1 in winter. The advantage of the estate version to me is that I can throw my bike into the back, and it's great for doing runs to the tip with bags of garden waste, etc. I've previously owned Toyota Versos in various forms; in my opinion, the Verso was one of the most useful and versatile cars Toyota have ever produced, for anyone with a family. If only they'decided to produce a hybrid version instead of discontinuing it!
Toyota are doing great work with this Corolla. The balance of new technologies and reliable powertrains make more a brilliant family car. Will you be getting to spend some time with the Land Cruiser?
Hi Thomas another great review and extra points for getting the purpose of B mode correct….every RU-vid reviewer usually gets that wrong. My only thought is maybe try to review a bottom of the range and a top of the range versions as that may be of interest to many viewers? Regards Mike
Just picked up a Certified '23 with 6800 miles on it. I freaking love it, so far. My only reservation is the CVT. I'm fine with the performance (def peppier than past base model Corollas), as long as the reliability is there. Hybrid was a lot more expensive for a fairly modest MPG gain and 29 fewer HP. I maxed out on the SE, plus, the one I got was literally the only 23 or 24 corolla on a lot in my area. Metallic Gray - didn't pick it, but I like it a lot.
No worries there as it is not actually a CVT. It is an eCVT (or HSD) with a planetary gearset so the chance of that breaking down is about the same as a differential (because it uses the same principle) - so about none. No belts in there at all as in Honda and Nissan traditional CVTs.
Thanks for that nice review with attention to a lot of details! Interesting that the drive mode selector is not changing the steering wheel forces in the new model: I have the previous 2.0 hybrid model. There the drive mode selector definitely changed the steering wheel forces. For that reason I like sport mode best in the previous model...
Beautiful paint on this Corolla. Would be useful for you to mention or have a graphical pop up which mentions where the specific vehicle being tested was manufactured. Potential buyers which are supplied by those factories would have an idea of what quality to expect.
Just wish there was a proper hot hatch version for the masses. Yes I know about the gr version but that's limited availability anyway and not at all in the UK.
It is a hybrid, it is pretty much the same increase as you would have in a common ICE vehicle - lower temperatures, winter tires, more AC usage and add less than 0,5l / 100 km to consumption.
The most beautiful hatch in the last 5 years maybe more , nice and practical interior , the exterior it's the best special with this dark Blue , good job Toyota
@@milan4ever it was great, this car drives super and still love it. But this op comming thursday my kia ev6 gt will be dropped off at my house. Been driving allot and with solar i can easlycharge. Would i reccomend this corolla 100%
I’m Belgian and I agree about the license plates… glad someone finally mentions it! Why can’t we just have white with black lettering like almost ALL other European countries? As a graphic design lover, I also must say the spacing between letters is way off, very sloppy, and the two horizontal lines are unnecessary, makes it very ugly. Grrrrr. 😅 Personally, I much more prefer the German and French designs. Besides that, very good review once again!
Why do Belgian numberplates have to look as any other number plate in Europe ? The colour never bothered anyone in probably 100 years except some German RU-vidr. Anyway the question of which colour to use was also asked by our Belgian government when they switched from 6-digit plates to 7-digit plates in the early 2010s. The white background would stay for readability. Some wanted black digits (especially the police so their cameras could better read those plates aka issue more fines) others wanted to keep "our" red digits. The compromise were darker red digits. Typical Belgian.
superb review Thomas, as always. as a Gen 6 2.5L Outback driver, hoping Subaru will take note of what Toyota has done with the Corolla engines, to perhaps in the next Outback UK/EU refresh they give more power and fuel efficiency -- or give us the turbo model!! 👍
People laughed when Alberta installed approximately 2,300 miles of rat proof fencing around its perimeter at a cost of $40 Billion but no one who regularly goes to sleep to the sound of rodent gnawing is laughing now. 😉
Another fantastic review! Huge thanks to the Autogefühl team! I enjoy the details so much. (Door closing sound!!) This level of detail is important when assessing a new car. Thanks!
Beautiful "Thomas Blue" I think I'd take the new Civic over this as it's an all round better car with much more interesting hybrid technology. The Corolla does look nicer though externally and it's made in the UK so it's good for our economy.
I like the new Civic, I have 2 kids so the boot is still not big enough and there is no estate version. Honda need to improve their warranty length and back their cars more as it’s a bit rubbish at 3 years
I don't know if I missed it in the video, but was cabin noise mentioned? Is it quiet on the inside or nah? People always complain about toyotas in that regard. Oh and also Thomas, nice hairstyle
Was quite ok actually! They re not leading in insulation but it’s not that bad, is better meanwhile. EU corolla have insulation windshield though, US corolla is louder!
Love the car 💙💙💙💙 unfortunately some of the states in the 🇺🇸 required front plates also 😖 like Virginia (my home state) . I agree 👍🏾vehicles look better without them 😊 another fantastic review.
Drove the precious model for 4 years and now upgraded to the 2023 business plus TS. Have to say I'm more impressed than I expected to be. Packed with options and more comfortable engine/drive-system. Also the lane assist works much, much better dan my previous car. I expected a bit better car, but I'm surprised how much of a difference it makes (but the extra options compared to previous first edition help with this off course).
@@JimboRustles You say it by yourself. It's a 30k+ car, there is no excuse not to have something that it's standard in most of the cars today, especially in lower priced vehicles...
@@JimboRustles For me, it is, because I would like to use that USB port for storage with my music (I don't use my phone to listen to music). But having only one data port in a car means I can listen to my music or use Android Auto.
One thing i wish they would learn from germans is 40/20/40 rear seats split. It is really usefull for family car in my opinion. Even koreans managed to offer it as option...
own the 2015 hybrid - got 3 tanks at 3.3l/100km until now, consumption w/o autobahn driving is at 4.25 l/100 km over 39.000 km. i honestly love it, it's comfortable, reliable and economical. nothing compared to the BMW X3 e83 i had previously. the better acceleration is everything this model needed, and the higher electric top speed. i'm really looking to buy the facelifted 2.0 hybrid now. the biggest turnoff are those low profile tires - stupid consumer trend.
Hello, I am interested, but how do you get such a good numbers? I am driving Auris 2018 TS 1.8 and I can berely squeeze 5l urban, winter is even higher. And I try every little thing to decrease the consumption. Thanks!
Great looking car, I really like the exterior design. Toyota's have always been a let down on interior style and tech for me though, but this looks a decent effort. Appears to be a simple, unfussy cabin and response times on the touch screen look decent. The great looking seats are set against really disappointingly cheap looking areas (those cup holders are awful) but that always seems the way with Toyota. Overall though, I like it a lot and this generation could become a bit of a high point in Corolla design I think.
No wagon version of this in the US, and the hatch is too short for my XC skis, so my only remaining option in the US is the sedan. Of course the sawn-off monster-truck version, the Corolla Cross, where one little lazily-positioned junction box in the rear prevents you from putting in a spare tire and the cargo area is still quite a bit shorter than the estate/station wagon. So annoying. And if the 2 liter hybrid wins on economy, why is the 1.8 hybrid still the only non-SUV Corolla hybrid option in the US, where if you want the 2 liter you have to get a Prius or a Corolla Cross hybrid?
On the last note, the more hp you use the better scenario for the 2L variant. Remember Top Gear M3 vs Prius fuel consumption show. It will only be if you really push past what is possible for the 1.8L but then there is no valid comparison to speak for.
E-CVT is where it's at. Completely different than the old rubbish CVT with belt and pully drives. It makes full use of the very efficient (39%) petrol and electric engines, very clever use of planetery gears for continuous gearing and regenerative power, and actually makes for simpler mecanical parts. It's not a new concept, but nice to see on a Corolla. Anyway, Corolla Estate 1.8L will be my new drive, if I can find one.
I was recently in the US for work and yes, while the front grill without number plate looks good, it is a huge problem if you’re finding which car is your cab in a hurry esp at airports 😢 You basically have to peek over each and every car and you only know which one is yours after it has passed you 😅
8:10 thank you for saying B is for engine braking for long downhills. I hate when reviewers know shit and say that it increases braking recuperation and they use it in the city. It drives me crazy.
Spare us the full electric. At this moment neither the cars or infrastructure are ready to replace combustion and hybrid engines. Only Tesla is somewhat better off with its own infrastructure. I see more of a future in maximised hybrids which drive almost entirely on self-charging electricity and a minimal amount of petrol/gas.
Could you elaborate a bit more on the suspension? I know that for the pre-FL model you said that it is not as good as the germans. Also, with the current prices, I’m really thinking what would be the best option. If I want to have the matrix led headlights than I have to buy the highest trim, which is around 42000EUR in my country. But for this price I can also pick up e.g. a 2 years old Audi A6, which should still be a better car suspension and noise insulation wise. So what would you recommend?
Ah sorry this was to the Corolla vid hehe. So an Audi A6 is ofc a totally different car. Maintenance will be higher, noise insulation and driving better
I was really hoping the Corolla Cross would be a lifted wagon. To chase the Subaru Outback buyer here in the US and to offer a Toyota Wagon. But sadly nope. It's also very very annoying how much harder automakers try in Europe for small cars than they do here in the US. I was just on the Toyota Website here and absolutely no way to add the rear vents or connectivity. Same goes with the Civic. The hatchback is also significantly more expensive. No wonder people move to crossovers when a impractical sedan trunk isn't going to cut it. The Corolla Cross comes standard with rear vents. Absolutely ridiculous.
Thomas, I have two questions to ask. Do people across Europe know that Toyota has been making AWD Hybrid Corolla Hatchbacks and Estates for years? Who would buy the Hatchback when they could have a Touring Sports? 🤔After all, if you are worried about being 'cool', you would not buy a Corolla in the first place. 😁
In Belgium they sell the hatchback and Touring Sports 2WD but not the sedan or AWD. 4 finishes, from low to high : Dynamic - Style - GR Sports and Premium. All hybrids. All available with 1.8L , some with 2.0L engine. I got the Premium 2.0L which costs about €41.000 (about the same amount in USD).
@@flitsertheo Hello from Canada, You may be interested to learn that your European Corolla Touring Sports is made in England and rides on a substantially longer wheelbase than the Corolla Touring made in Japan.
Sadly in Australia we do not get the 2.0 litre hybrid, only the low powered 1.8 litre hybrid, for reasons unknown. The fuel economy between 1.8 and 2.0 hybrids is almost the same (~5%?) but 2.0 hybrid performance is much better (7.5 sec versus 9.2 sec for 0-100kmh). Most of extra performance seems to come above >60kmh making 2.0 hybrid much easier to drive on motorways and on 80-110kmh country roads with better overtaking capability on single lane roads.
Toyota is still Toyota now with improved dynamics and also the interior and exterior are good upgrades.Good sized reliable and eficient engines so it is more than you want for the class.Good job Toyota!
Would you consider going to higher trim to get matrix lights or stay with GR sport for the looks ( i like black details/roof much more)? Higher trim should also have acoustic windshield. I just cant decide.
Danke for the great videos Thomas! What do you think of the sounds isolation of the 2023 Corolla? Did you experience more tire + windnoise compared to rivals?
Is there a way to tell how much EV range you get after X min of driving? For example, my commute is 45 min. 30 min average 70km/h then rest is city driving. Can I somehow know that I will have enough EV charge for city? I don't really know how E-hybrid works compared to plugin hybrids. Same with long distance driving. Say that im going on a 3h trip. Will it use EV, then only gas, then EV when it is charged and repeat like that or save EV just for lower speed?
It doesn't work that way. The car will switch to EV or petrol/gas according to your driving style. Even at high speed it could use EV as long as you drive "economically sound". As long as there is gas/petrol in your car it will drive. It probably drives on EV only also, though with reduced power. The car recharges automatically (don't remember how that works, brake energy ?). There is so much to discover and learn when I receive my new Corolla.
Hate the digital instruments and especially hate the tablet perched up in the middle. This is a big turn-off. Everything else is fine, and looks great from the outside too.
Must be nice to get a Corolla Estate. Us here in the US have to make due with the Corolla Cross which, yes, it’s a good car. But the Corolla Estate to me is a far better vehicle.
After watching some reviews for the toyota i really like it. The deal breaker is that there is no heated steering wheel. How can they only have heated seats and no wheel? My focus does have everything even the heated windscreen.
