On this walk we join the crowds on a busy Saturday afternoon and take the simple and quickest route from the entrance to Malham Tarn Estate to the stunning limestone pavement at the top.
Look out for the erratics scattered all across the ancient river bed where the stream passes through. The rocks and boulders strewn all over were put there by raging Ice Age rivers when the cove was a powerful waterfall, so it was quite something to walk amongst them.
I hope you all enjoy this one, after all I have saved you from a pretty challenging walk up a lot of steps!
Got a spare five minutes? View Malham Cove from above by watching the 'From The Air' film which accompanies this walk.
Malham Cove is a large curved limestone formation 1 km north of the village of Malham in North Yorkshire, England. It was formed by a waterfall carrying meltwater from glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age more than 12,000 years ago. The limestone pavement at the top is a superb example of later karst weathering and was formed during the early Carboniferous (Dinantian, 359-331 Million years ago), when sea levels rose and northern England was flooded by warm, tropical seas. At this time the area was about 10⁰ south of the equator.
Malham has become even more popular since being used as a unique location for a pivotal scene in the seventh film - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part One.

I loved this. I could not make that trek if my life depended on it as I have a serious illness, so it is wonderful to have the chance to see it. Thanks.

That brought back happy memories! Was there in ‘50s on Youth Hostel trip in my teens. Hard to believe number of visitors today. Interesting rock formation from what was a river on the surface wearing through limestone and appearing at base of what must have been a waterfall. Doesn’t it make you wonder how long it took to build all those miles of rock walls! Thanks for posting so I could see it again. There was no easy path back then! Beautiful England, my homeland!

Wow, Malham in the 50's! Must have been a struggle going up without steps. And yes, it was an ancient waterfall as I mentioned in the video description. Glad you enjoyed 🕊️
