It just struck me, now, years after the show ended, that Dr. Murphy is called Murphy, and that with him everything that can go wrong, does. I am a slooooow man...
The part I loved about Scrubs was that after a couple seasons you clued in on the fact that Dr. Cox was a complete burn-out. He _really_ cared about his patients and the whole insulting and ranting routine was just his way of dealing with the sheer existential horror that is being unable to help so many people -- That's why the "perfect game" episode is my favorite. All the man wants is just *one* day when he doesn't have to stare death in the face.
Backed up even further by Season 5 Episodes 20&21. He had a deep connection with a patient, albeit through childhood trauma, and when him and 3 other patients died because of a freak accident he causes, he completely loses it. Dr. Cox always plays some villainous role to drive people away, but when it truly matters and the balance of someone's life or career comes into play, he shows who he truly is. Which is why the finale (I don't count season 9 as a show, much less a season) was such a perfect finale.
@@neralvan2738 Yeah that one episode in particular is probably my favorite in the entire run of the show. To make it all worse, there was one patient in that episode who Cox was friends with and was not in any danger of dying until receiving the rabies-infected organ donation. You could see just how personally he took that death and how responsible he felt for it (as it led to his stint away from the hospital), and it showed you--as you said--just how much he truly cared for his patients.
I knew a guy who worked at either a funeral home or crematorium (I forgot which). The people there would make the most fucked up jokes according to him. nothing was sacred, anything was allowed. Not because they were bad people, or had bad morals. It was purely because they NEEDED to do it to get through the day. It's one thing to have a ceremony for an elderly lady who died peacefully in her sleep. Its another to hold it for a 9 year old who was struck dead by a car. That info always stuck by me and it's the main reason why I feel Doctor Cox is quite possibly the most realistic aspect of the show.
Or and hear me out he just loves rants which is shown when JD gave him an encyclopedia with every rant he’s every made...the delight on his face is telling
because most people think it but our society says everyone should be treated nice even when its just not true. its also why so many love insult comedy (think of a roast)
Its surprising.A shock, and its there to make you laugh so its ok to laugh at poor dr. murphy being emotionally crippled by his superiors because its a joke but irl he would probably become severely depressed so we dont say that irl. Its fantasy about letting out rage but in very inappropriate ways, imagine if the show focused on dr murphys sad background or something, those jokes wouldnt be so funny. However we know the struggles of cox and his therapy so it makes it a bit more real. You get assholes who just take jokes from this and find power in using it in real life, but they don't know the suffering the guy on the other end goes through. A lot of people are raised by tv nowadays. Time and place.
“There seems to be a mix up, this hell. Hello Hitler, hello Mussolini, Captain Kangaroo? That’s weird.” Not just the dialog, but the way Cox delivers it, laughing too hard to breath. 😂😂
The writers of this show came up with a brilliant way to deal with the Dr./Mr. Murphy character. If you are a fan of the show (spoiler), you learn that Murphy eventually specializes in Pathology and, it turns out, he is superbly good at his job. Why? Because he had accidentally killed so many patients when he was still treating them, that he became a walking encyclopedia of causes of death. Just genius writing (and acting)!

The best thing about this show is the few moments it got serious it would burn a hole in your heart so quickly that you didn't know how to process it fast enough. Therein lies the essence of life.
Honestly I think my favorite part of this whole thing is the exchange between Kelso and JD: JD: "Nana Hobbes or Grandma Dorian? Because Nana Hobbes can be a teensy bit racist." KELSO: "Grandma Dorian." JD: "She's dead." Cox may not appreciate JD all the time, but you know damn well JD was doing that just to be an asshole and piss off Kelso, and I love it.
"Perry, it's hotter than hell in here!" "Freezing!" "Great coffee though!" "Rat piss!" "Dr. Murphy is an incompetent suck-up!" "No Bob, in fact he's one of the finest young doctors I've ever had the good fortune of working with!" "Your witness."
Kelso: RoboCop 3 is total crap! Cox: Masterpiece. Kelso: I say po-ta-to, and you say... Cox: To-ma-to. Kelso: How many lights are there? Cox: THERE. ARE. FOUR. LIGHTS. Kelso: Dr. Cox is the greatest physician who ever lived. Cox: ... damn you.
Great moment in Scrubs, but as far as this being his most underrated joke/rant I must quote the man himself. "Wrong wrong wrong wrong. Wrong wrong wrong wrong. You're wrong. You're wrong. You're wrong."
One of the best moments was when J.D. said, "Soon you'll control what I say" and Dr. Cox responds, "I can control what you're say. Watch. Say something annoying!" J.D. responds, "See, it's..." and Dr. Cox says, "TA-DA!!!" That is by far one of Dr. Cox's sickest burns ever.
my favorite kelso moment is when JD's patient dies and kelso tells him. "Dr. Dorian you patient coded, i called it" "wait he's dead are you sure????" "well if he isn't that autopsy's gonna be a bitch" i know this isn't a kelso video, but kelso is still gold in this one too.
My all time favorite Dr Cox moment is still: Elliot: "Dr Cox, I need your help." Dr Cox: "I would love to help you Barbie, but I am plum out of hair scrunchies."
My favorite part: I don't ever want to hear anything that's come out of that man's mouth; unless, of course, it's "Oh, my God! I'm dying. Now I'm moving towards the light. But wait a minute, there's been a mistake! This is Hell! Hello, Hitler. Hello, Mussolini. Captain Kangaroo? That's weird!" LOL
They could have easily had Dr Cox and Dr Kelso switch arguments and have Kelso say he wants everyone to focus only on people who have a chance because it will boost the hospital stats and give us more grants or whatever, but instead they actually made Dr Cox wrong and Dr Kelso right. It humanizes both of them which makes this a great show
What I liked about the show was they put a lot of work into not having a 'villain' , just people with conflicting ideas on how to handle shit. Everyone had a reason for being the way they are, shit even "the todd" acts how he does due to hidden insecurities Kelso and cox aren't bad people, they're just burned out from a lifetime of this shit
All about animation it's good has emotional and comedic scenes... however Frasier and everybody loves Raymond were slightly smarter in there jokes .. particularly Frasier
Nah the best Cox and Kelso scene was when Cox punched him in front of everyone for being a bullying asshole to Elliot and everyone's reaction it made that the best ever scene 😂😂
@@filipjovanovic8138Yeah from what I heard, a lot of research was done as well as talking with some doctors, especially the doctor that heavily influenced JD's character. Plus unlike House and Grey's, the drama of the show doesn't nearly as often come from the actual medicine or the rare or weird cases about it, but about the emotional connection and internal tensions between the characters, so you don't need to lean as heavily into medicine aspects (including fudging more things so they go the way of the plot) which also helps accuracy
I kinda agree with both doctors, on one hand, you need to spend as much time looking after patients who actually have a chance to live but you also can’t let the patients who don’t have any chance just die alone.
And not a single laugh track in sight. Well, except for "My Life In Four Cameras", which was supposed to be there. Oh, and the reworkings of MASH with the laugh track added for stupid people, which ruined it.
@@proudtennessean6152 That is because TV viewers don't want to see a doctor the same procedures over and over. They always get the most unique cases... The reason why this show is reasonable accurate is because they don't focus as much on the patients, but more on the transition of the medical students make into becoming a doctors...
My mum walked in on me watching this on the part where he said murphy was a good doctor. She immediately asked me of Dr Cox was drinking earlier in the episode
To be fair by Kelso he is not wrong. That's why while I found him unpleasant, I never hated him. Families of patients are paying doctors to spend time with the patients. It's not about saving the patient but managing the optics, which, let's face it everyone has to do.

It doesn't take a genius. It's called triage, and every person in the field learns it from the get-go. Sad to say, there is a priority and true professionals follow it. That's what this scene was getting at, even if light-hearted and out of context.
Reminds me a time when I was rushed into the ER from a head wond. The Doctor was using me as a classroom demonstration. The only thing going through my mind is, "don't screw up on me" I still like nurses better than doctors dealing with stitches.

I've rewatched the entire series (not you, season 9) over the last couple months, and am about to re-rewatch it. So all I can say is go deep, and enjoy.
My favorite part of that last bit is that you have two things the audience can't tell (temperature of the room and the quality of the coffee) and then the last one just SEALS IT.
I haven't watched Scrubs in many years. It makes me laugh until I cry or my sides hurt. If the Reruns came on at 3am and I had to get up for work at 6am I would still watch it, sleeplessness and all.
Yeah the producers decided that they needed to expand on the characters in the ‘weapons chest’: the term used for sub-characters who are funny for ridiculous reasons. I.e. Todd, Ted etc.
No matter how many times I see a scrubs episode I cant get passed seeing Dr Cox as Sgt O'Neil from Platoon, and that just makes every thing he does even more epic.
So true. Working in a hospital system is juggling multiple bosses and managers who all want contradictory things. Your best bet is to navigate it without one or both of them getting TOO angry with you.
Rat piss. He says 'Rat piss'. I saw this episode countless times but here in the UK everything slightly quirky gets censored. Now I've gotten this full scene after like 6 years.

I love that this show actually dived into Kelso and Cox, showing that their sarcasm or cynicism is actually their last line of defense because they actually care a lot. So much it actually hurts. That's what they look for in the younger staff and Cox Kelso are just in different stages of struggling with how they want to care for patients and the bitter realities they've seen. Kelso is partly the way he is in order to shape Cox the way Cox shapes the kids; reality can be bitter and tough, but you have to make hard calls and think beyond what you may want for yourself or idealistically think is right. For a comedy show, I appreciated they gave chances for these characters to be deeper.
After 15 years as a respiratory therapist and working in several different hospitals the part I find funniest is the idea that a Doctor of any sort being the one to draw an ABG or have anything to do with weaning a patient off of a ventilator. Most doctors have no idea how to do either of those tasks. But I guess that's why it's funny.
Indeed. It's one of the 2 reasons I never watched this show. The 2nd being I could never suspend my disbelief that Braff was somehow able to get really hot women. I know tv is supposed to be fantasy but.....there are limits, y'know?
actually there are nurses characters, and as the main cast is made up of interns, well, they do quite a lot of nurses work. But mostly, you have to blame the law of conservation of detail to blame: most of the things are done by the main characters, who are mostly doctors. Would be fun to have a show about the rest of the medical personel though.
