Let’s talk about one of the best yet sadly largely unknown classic rock guitar players and songwriters Frank Marino! Get the 6 hour video set here! www.mahoganyru...
I have 6 of his albums and a few of his CD's. Most folks in the Deep South have never heard of him and are blown away when I "introduce" them to him, lol.
I'm in B'ham AL, and me and all my friends were into him in the 70's. We saw him live twice, once in Atlanta & once in B'ham. I saw him again during a work stint in Houston, TX. Some of us young players in the 'deep south' knew who he was. Fantastic player, singer & songwriter.
my pops got me into Mahogany Rush. he is quite frankly one of the top 10 best guitarist ever. i have several songs that i play over and over...Stories of a Hero, Land of 1000 Nights, Dear Music, Dragon Fly...his show at the agora theater was simply amazing.
Growing up in Niagara Falls n.y. i had the LUXURY of watching Frank since the mid 70's ! Over 6 decades now. The man IS incredible and also a stellar human being.
I have most all of Franks catalog and he can do it all. Hard rock, psychedelic rock, even some jazz. For straight up guitar jams it doesn't get better than What's Next,IMO. Smokin' hot.But i love em all!
The Most Humble Outstanding Guitar player I have ever met. He does not even own his own house. He Rents. Lives about an hour from me and Frank I hope your Shoulder gets better. The World needs to see you again.
Managed to pick up an EP "Fourth Degree Burns" at my local record shop about 20 years ago. I've never seen it anywhere else or even any mention of it. Great record. Also got five other albums by Frank - he's a legend. Hope he recovers from his injury and can start making music again. Such a genuine nice guy and very talented he deserves a lot more than he actually got from the music business. We need more people like him in the world 😊
Poor Frank spent years restoring the audio that was lost from the Agoura gig, but he did an amazing job fixing it!…he is the nicest man to meet, so humble, I witnessed him playing for three hours without a break when he did his 35th anniversary tour, it was truly staggering, a juggernaut of a player!….my favorite album is still Tales of the Unexpected! 😎👏🏻🎸💫
This also happened on the RealLIVE 2 CD album live in Montreal, 2001. The Tape machine got accidentally turned off. Luckly a fan video recorded the whole show. I read this in an interview. Frank found the recorded fan video, and used it to fix the damaged songs. i'm not sure how many songs were damaged , but it was guite a task to fix. Frank super excellent sound engineer.
My problem is that I have 2 pedal boards or more worth of pedals of every type. I’m sure these will be collectors items but its hard to justify 500.00 on another pedal.
Thanks for covering frank sir managed to see him 5 times spanning the '80s - 2000's I've listened to most of Frank's interviews Your bio-tary is great thanks again. I have the DVD. Frank had problems with labels the agora thing may be an attempt to re release a lot of the songs where most of the proceeds go back to him I find frank plays a lot cleaner on the agora stuff to further prove to people he's not hiding behind effects, something he's been dodging since the mid 70s
Been a Big fan since I got Strange Universe on 8 track in 75. Was one of my all time favorite albums. Never got any air time on U.S radio , probably because he was self promoting instead of record corp deals. P.S. you didn't mention Tales of the Unexpected. Somewhere around 79 album I think, nowhere near his best but worth a mention. Also no mention of his brother joining the band. He was also a very accomplished musician. If you like hard / psychedelic rock, Mahogany Rush is a must listen to
Thank you for this excellent overview of the great Frank Marino, absolutely one of the top guitar players ever who as you said never got his rightful due. If it were based on talent he would have been a giant.
Child of the Novelty and Strange Universe ! I wore those albums out on the 70’s! Saw Mahogany Rush and it was Amazing. Never understood why the radio only played their covers. Frank is an amazing performer. The real deal!
Get the Boxset! Well worth it 👌 I would have paid that much for the 1st set alone, which includes 3 Jimi Hendrix covers ... Are You Experienced, Bold As Love, and The Wind Crys Mary. I haven't heard anyone do Jimi covers any better. He had to digitally create the drum tracks for this DVD ... it took him 7 years to do it. There were another 6 hours of music form that show, 12 hours in total. They recorded the sound check the day before as well. I'm not so sure he would fix all of the drums tracks for all of that, but maybe a select few.
You missed out Red House from the first set, and you're correct, Frank is the best interpreter of Hendrix there is. Btw the soundcheck recording from the day before was fine, no problem with the drum track on that but it can't be released as it contains so many covers that Frank can't get permission from the copyright owners. The drum track wasn't digitally created by Frank, he enhanced what bled through to the vocal microphones as the original drum track recording failed on the day. I believe his health problems stem from that experience, although he hasn't released details of what his sickness is there are whispers that he has chronic pain from a frozen shoulder joint caused by over 1.5 million clicks of a mouse over five years while fixing that drum track and cannot play guitar anymore. Keeping any joint in the same position for that length of time will cause serious problems but there are ways out and I hope he finds it soon.
Strange Dreams / Midnight Highway / Stories Of A Hero / Free / Maybe Its Time / Ditch Queen / For Your Love / Juggernaut! CLASSIC ROCK N ROLL ALL OF IT! @@shanghunter7697
While to the common person Frank may not be known, guitar players know exactly who he is. He's the guy who influenced Joe bonamassa,Zakk Wylde and huge number of other players including myself. Franks playing is otherworldly, insanely good!!
rory gallager, robin trower, hawkwind ozrick tentakiels jon bonnamasa, beth hart, tangerin dream ,klaus shultse, rush, clutctch bel. jazz rock canto,so mutch. jazz rock. al de me ola. jean luck ponty. so many. just fucking love it
He was super big live in the late 70's California Jam 2. But radio? No. He did it by word of mouth and live. He peaked and could NOT take it any further coming through Chicago 3 X's on the brilliant Juggernaut L.P./ Last show at the Metro he did Van Halen, Santana and one other like ....f(^kk you...I've got this man. But after 11 years of road album he backed away as things changed and he needed a break. Check out 83's live at Park West if you can find it. Phenomenal.
Much better. Stevie got better towards the end. But Frank was Frank even though he had the Hendrix thing hanging over him for his first several years. What's Next and Juggernaut are two albums none can compare to.
3/3/83 We were outside of the Park West on a balmy 50 degree night in Chicago arguing over which was his best album What's Next or Juggernaut. He was touring for the 1st of 3 times thru Chicago on that night on the Juggernaut LP. Before he went away. BTW Tim Biery who replaced Jimmy Ayoub after Power of Rock and Roll was the best drummer I ever saw.
