Don't worry mark, that ending would have just changed the story very little and ended the game early. There's still plenty in the swamp and another way to get home. Don't lose hope, it happens. Look for a location with a gas masks symbol, that is where you can continue towards the other ending which is the normal route. The way you took was more of a "secret" Ending. Keep up the series. With love
@@Sunnysideanyway that's true and I get I adds more insight to the games lore but I was just trying to justify that the other ending isn't bad and it wasn't marks fault he lost the chance of the true ending
I died at this part too, and I was so unbelievably bummed about it, completely defeated, needed to break before playing again. Looking back after beating the game I'm glad I died at this part. It was much more fulfilling to see the rest of the game's content and its way more satisfying to get the other endings. I later appreciated how badly I wanted to get out of the woods and how defeating it was to be so close, the game did a good job provoking that, because I cared.
I think it's a pretty dick move though on the developer's part. If the stakes aren't shown then it feels completely crushing. If you hadn't chosen to play it again, that part would have entirely ruined your experience of the game solely because of how obtuse it was and that you had no way of knowing how significant or insignificant the loss was.
Honestly though Mark is right. It's a cheap fucking move. It makes me unfathomably angry to see something so unfair and stupid put in there, especially with how well Mark was doing. Like seriously you get everything right and all that hard work goes out the window if you wait for a second too long? That's just idiotic in my opinion and it can ruin someone's experience. If I were playing this I don't know if I would want to pick the game back up after something like that.
@@HappyLarry. Exactly. It just ruined my experience, I am already so bored with this game, I've given it around 40 hours and it's so boring and frustrating I do not wish to come back to it just to see the ending.
this method of escaping the woods was implemented for speedrunners, you know, people who have played the game a lot and already know what they're doing. the game warns you that you only get one shot at the dream sequence multiple times, and makes it pretty clear that you need to run into the maw seeing as you're being chased by black chompers.
Yeah, but he still has a fair point that the ending completely screwed him over. If you get inside the mouth then you just get canceled out, that's not even ok because he was completely out of range of the teeth
Relax Mark that is kinda speedrun exit you going through there you would've skipped EVERYTHING and there is still much to explore you haven't even found half the stuff in the swamp
Gameplay Therapy I generally ignore it but you really need to stop camping in Marks comments and shameless plugging. I understand growing a channel is difficult but it’s starting to look like you’re just trying to coattail Mark which is cheap.
Lixian's editing, the game itself, and Markiplier's commentary makes this one of the best gameplay series i've seen. Also if Mark ever gets too see this, remember you haven't explored a lot of the swamp, so needing to get another tunnel is not bad :D
@@jeremykennee7942 not everyone likes top down games like this, I'm not a fan of this type myself, but I gave it a go out of curiosity, and I'm just in it till the end now haha
I was actually very impressed with the entire secret ending sequence and how Mark was able to get through everything without dying even once. There were many moments where I thought “Ah, he’s gonna die here and then wake up,” but he kept it up all the way until the failed maw ending. I can totally understand his frustration from that. But like I said, I’m always endlessly impressed by you, Mark. I hope you can continue this series, it’s honestly one of my favorites that you’ve done so far. You’ve got this.
lmao, it should be more like this game:i think you're lost game: i think you're lost mark:almost making it too ez on me game: aight fam, here's an unbeatble chomper, 3 spider fuckers running after u without u having any weapons and ofcourse, a shitty ass plot that made u lose :)))
Right? Mark's all upset that it's "unfair" but the game tried several times to tell him to quit dickin' around and focus on the objective. He just couldn't seem to help himself even all the way to the end. This day, curiosity truly killed the cat and Mark's shot at the shortcut outta the swamp.
@@ApocolypseChild I get why he chose to wander around since there's usually extra stuff or easter eggs hidden in "alternate" paths and the random people saying "you're lost" could have been a "lie" to turn the player away from potential findings. Also a different version of the quote is "Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back" lol. I hope he does stop being mad about it and come back to finish the game with the other path :(
@@pickleslayer3381 well from what I read the original quote was traced back to 1598 while the "satisfaction" add-on was traced back to 1905, hence I referred to it as "a different version"
I'm so glad that he got chomped on at the last second of his dream sequence. I know it pissed him off, but if it weren't for that, he would've finished Darkwood having only experienced 1/3 of what Chapter 2 has to offer
I understand the frustration. I felt the same way when I first played through the game. Darkwood is equally satisfying as it is punishing and frustrating. It doesn't really tell you anything about what you're supposed to do. Most of it is just a big guessing game, especially towards the ending(s). I can say that me and the rest of the community are thoroughly enjoying your playthrough though. Don't stress out about it, we love seeing the decisions you make. You're entertaining as always Mark. By the way, loved the "Almost too easy" motto from the first videos. lol
Artuurs Z. how is somebody who never played a game before supposed to know to do all of that? Just calm down and view it as somebody playing a game, FOR THE FIRST TIME, at their own speed, with no guides or spoilers. Just don’t watch it if it bothers you so much. You don’t need to be here. We’re lucky enough that he decided to play through it despite all the people, like you, complaining.
The fact that is been an entire 4 days since his last Darkwood episode and the previous ones were only 1 or 2 days apart makes me worried that he actually got extremely upset about the death. Please come back Mark. You must escape the woods.
Besides needing some time to cool off a little from the sting of that, he has suffered an indignity at the hands of RU-vid and was forced to not upload for a week. I'm sure he'll return, don't worry. =3 This game has so much more in store, according to the other commenters. He's bound to hear us!
@@aubarlowe I'm not sure, and it was a couple years back but I feel like it was some issue RU-vid had that put a hold on his ability to upload.. I really can't recall details, I'm sorry. I think he does mention it in another video around that time, but I'm not sure which it would be. If it was the [Redacted] channel, it's lost to time anyway.
That was a "secret" ending Mark, that skips alot of the rest of the story. Usually only people who are trying to accomplish the secret ending and know that it's a secret ending and know what to do would succeed. In other words, now you get the route that completes the story, and just dont get the speed run ending.
This works amazingly in top down perspective. I might even say it works best in this perspective. I dunno why you want 1st person, because half of the game's "creepiness" relies on this view
@Furious Cubes I was just quoting the beginning of the game, dude. More focusing on the "You will not be held by the hand." From what other comments have said, that was more of a speedrun ending, giving in to the woods. I can understand why Mark is frustrated, but I don't think you should think of it as failing the dream sequence. . .you made a decision to not immediately trust the mysterious thing that said "Come to me," and that's a decision that affects the ending. I think they could have done the door a little better other than saying "I can't go out this way," but still.
@Furious Cubes To be fair, the game used the exact same story-telling that it always has. It tried to tell Mark several times that he's "lost" and even attacked him for it. It was saying quit trying to look around or go slowly/carefully and instead just charge forward and focus on the objective. Even at the end there, Mark chose to keep looking around and waste time which caused him to miss his opportunity and get punished. It's totally in keeping with the tone/theme of this game and I can definitely get behind it. He was adequately warned.
@@ApocolypseChild well no matter what the game has been successful and loved by the community, regardless of what mark thinks. Stay safe in the woods meat.
@@TV_FireFox7 Uh... he means that when Mark said "buh bye" at the end, it wasn't as enthusiastic-sounding as it usually is?? I'm not sure what about his comment was confusing lol
Mark: I am the most safe I've ever been. Also Mark: *refuses to fix the fence monsters can't cross and hides in a room that he can't barricade when the banshee comes. Also also Mark (dreamy voice): Hi birds. Also also also Mark: *still hasn't figured out that when the shadows come, they knock out all but one light.
@@galacticgamer6635 the greatest experience in any game is the element of learning and the unknown. Unfortunately, comment sections have many spoilers, for example 'secret ending' etc
That ending would of just ended the game early. Theres still a lot left in the swamp to explore. In a way the "true" ending to the game is done a different way. Losing that ending isnt all that bad
BUT, Then again if he got this ending then he would think to play more of the game to get the other ending as well. BUT HE DIED AND THAT PISSES HIM OFF! And its his first time playing it so it doesn't matter what ending he gets if he is already THERE!!!! but DIED ANYWAY!!!. It SUCKS!!!
Developer : Hey mark! we'll tell you the secret ending of the story, just to make it short you know to teased your viewer, ya know what im saying. Mark : ALMOST TOO EASY!
There are no ending differences whether you esacape through the radio tower or not, the actions which determine the endings only exist in the final chapter
eh, I think he's done with game, given how in chapter 1 he switched from "lets explore the woods more" to lets get through the tunnel which he assumed would end the game.
@@FAT4LS It was an ending designed to reward certain players and get to the end of the game fast. The game is still a game designed to be brutal and unforgiving. He messed it up and has to find another way out. Its not like hes locked out of a certain ending or anything. He just needs to find another way like the game designed it to be. The ending is designed mostly for seccond playthroughs with players who want to get to the final chapter quickly. Almost everyone (me included) failed it on there first run.
Kinda sad about the trader guy, maybe he prevented the protagonist from escaping the woods because of how lonely he is, maybe he wanted to show his gratitude to the player (idk if the protagonist helped him or smth), maybe thats why he said "all roads lead deeper into the woods" so we can just stay and not get killed by any monstrous thing (kinda weird, staying in the woods is probably not a good idea but as we progress, the enemies are getting stronger so maybe that's what he worries about)
I feel you i was looking forward to his upload every day. I put on youtube notifications and every thing now all i get is fall guys and surgeon simulator... I love this game but if mark dosent want to play it i guess thats up to him :(
Have some patience people. He uploaded this like once a week or so. Mark has raged on several games in the past and 9 times outta 10 he comes back a few days later with it. Besides his channel doesn't revolve around this game only. So just chill, grab some chips and some apple juice, kick your feet on the coffee table, and wait
@@ADarkerFantasy I know (._.) I literally just said have some patience. That's all. He plays games besides this one right? He'll get back to it when his unyielding rage cools off
@@YahtzeeB see i do have patience. But im allowed to express that it makes me sad that there is a chance that he wont play more. Although it makes me sad that again, maybe he won't..
18:50 "I notice a little smiling face of a girl gazing at me from behind a cluster of sleeping heads. Oblivious to the chaos around her, she studies me with curiosity. Just next to her, a massive man calmly hums some melody. The lullaby drowns in the overwhelming noise surrounding the tree."
He's totally justified in being frustrated, especially since he did the sequence so well. Like it's a 50/50 on whether a player goes instantly through the mputh of the trunk or not.
Yeah, that's true. I mean if a giant mouth chomping says "COME...TO...ME" chances are that I'm gonna be like nope, no thanks as a player. It's unfair that the game assumes you're gonna obey it immediately cause your instincts would tell you otherwise
@Death This is SO true. Like obviously he's going to be careful. I know he's being chased but still. There's also the fact that Mark really get immersed.
I'm SO happy he failed it, that means he would've missed a lot of content even more then he already missed that is kinda speedrun passage is made to be unfair and hard if he had succeeded that literally meant game over you can skip the entire swamp area without doing anything through that path now he has to go through the tree which means MOORE CONTENT he almost did it too good thing he failed he just doesn't know it
@@reyalfa18 yeah, there was no way Mark (or any other player) could've known the right way of doing that in their first run :/ I give Mark every right time be frustrated cause he did everything else perfectly
@@GlaciesA I can see where you're coming from and I really like this series too, I don't want it to end, but it's still bad game design. So many of the things in Darkwood are run/fight and the non-dangerous things are very obviously passive given that they don't move. They could have done it in a better way that didn't effectively waste all that gameplay
Yeah I can understand Mark's frustration, even if it was only the secret ending it's super frustrating if you got all that way unscathed and then fuck up at the last part and don't even get a second chance. But again, I think because it was only the secret ending, it's not too bad. Still understandably frustrating though.
It's not really a "secret ending" ,but basically it just saves you a lot of hassle to get either of 2 ending, the shortcut way if u will,the...speedrun way Even if you didn't passed this one, u still can get that 2 ending, the difference is only on how long to achieve it,since u had to get it trough the normal way Cmiiw
Its his own fault. Game said many times its unforgiving. And it kept punishing him for looking around there and wasting time. It was obvious he needed to power through not waste any more time.
The title of the power was "Appetite" so I think it's less about having super teeth that can blast through a trunk, and more about the ability to digest it. His definition of Omnivore has expanded to include arborvore
This last dreamsequence section was supposed to be hard. It is what causes the "best" ending. But the difference between the best and the good ending is very minimal. So dont worry. All the more reason to play through the game again I suppose. Though I agree, it's a little cheap to make that end so narrow, just to encourage another playthrough.
The first time i played i thought the mouth was a death guarantee, so i started looking for a door, it never occured to le until now that i had to jump in it first time ( which i think is the cheap trick)
Man I love this series, this game is just so interesting and well built. Its well balanced and probably one of my favorite playthroughs of yours I've ever watched.
@@hammyofdoom8355 It is, because that exit bypasses THE WHOLE GAME. You arent meant to get it on your first playthrough and the tree is the main objective. Its incredibly balanced and that exit is for speedrunning, plus it did warn that he had one single chance.
Mark, be happy the game stopped you from skipping all the good content, you have already missed so many of the coolest parts of the game because you just kinda walked past it or didn't want to interact with it.
cheezemonkeyeater I don’t know much of this game’s story but it sure seems like the main character is doing the same. Or at least becoming part of the forest.
@@leolion3323 Oh, yes, everything does, eventually. The basic plot, if you piece together all the information, is that this place was struck by a weird disease that slowly turns people into monsters. Around the same time, the trees grew wild and out of control and started absorbing people. A military unit - which the doctor and the main character were a part of - was sent to try and help the people inside and stop the wild tree growth. Obviously, they failed.
@Artuurs Z. There's no reason to go calling people who don't play the game names. The best way to get people to play a game would be to pique their interest, not insult them. As obscure as this game is, there's going to be a lot of people on Marks' channel who've never even heard of it, especially if they joined after his initial couple of videos playing it. Jerk.

Artuurs Z. You seem like you’ve played it before Come at it from a new players perspective there is a massive monster mouth that you know will kill you and you’re rushing to get to the end because of tentacle death chasing you Theres no doubt i would be afraid to run into the mouth, it should be a longer timer so players can access the situation before they go into what they would believe to be certain death.
TheReal Chief It’s the secret ending that pretty much skips through the chapter. The developers don’t want people to complete it in their first playthrough. It’s more of a bypass in case you want to quickly get past the chapter
I feel you Mark. I'm also pretty damn wtf, and I would be frustrated too. I understand that it's supposed to be the whole "One chance only" thing driven home, but damn is it not frustrating.
I’ve played through twice and never finished that sequence. What I love is after I failed I pick myself up and just moved onward to figure things out. Resilience so to speak. I love this series and I hope you keep going with the same motivation.
it's so rough seeing him get so upset when he's loved the game so much, I kind of agree, that a split second of hesitation shouldn't really fuck someone over, but I suppose if its a secret ending, idk still hard to see
Darkwood has always been an unfair game it says from the title to every loading screen. Darkwood won’t lead you by the hand, every dream sequence in the game has a real impact on the physical world in your game if done succesfully wether just unlocking a container or unbarricading a staircase. Mark failed literally every dream sequence before this one and did poorly on the final dream sequence too. The shiny stones are indicator of a safe path. He didn’t take the safe path because he didn’t know the safe route because he never one a dream sequence by following the stones. All that being said Darkwood is a game that is done justice by two playthroughs. There are 2 ways to escape the first chapter, there are two ways to get out of the swamp and there are two endings as well as different events that happen as you go down different paths. You were never meant to get the radio ending the first time, it’s meant for people who go back to uncover the other secrets in darkwood.
Honestly Mark- it'd be great to come back to this in a few days or weeks and start a fresh file! One you can take your time on, and explore all the avenues you missed before. There's so much more to experience that you didn't get to see, and then you could decide at the end if you go with the 'Radio Tower' ending [which is the secret one that messed up here] or the 'Tree' ending, where you go into Jasik's basement. A fresh playthrough would let you go in with more knowledge, and this game is kinda designed to be played more than once! Like so Mark can see, if you agree! If you want. Would love to see more of this with a fresh plate, so you can enjoy it through as one single, more coherent experience!
I think that if he's gonna replay the game, he'll do it in his leisure time by himself. Nevertheless, I'd be ecstatic if he recorded more Darkwood content.
@@e.luotao Yeahhhh. I feel like a stream might be a better format for a replay. I love lixian's editing for these vids, but if mark wanted to play it more laid-back then a stream might be nice. Either way, really hope he continues!
@@VT-Scribbles: According to Mark's own words, he's already finished the game. (He confirmed it about 1 or 2 weeks ago.) Also, I personally don't think a stream would be a more laid-back way for Mark to (re)play a game like this having seen all the backseat gaming that takes place every time Mark is playing a game while streaming. He prefers figuring things out on his own, but unfortunately too many people disrespect that.
@@Husitka Aaah didn't know he'd confirmed finishing it already, ah well! And yeah I gotta agree there, the backseat gaming does get pretty bad. Oh well, cest la vie!
Mark literally missed the tree in that sequence. It had the back story of the protagonist and how he ended up in the doctors house. The escape sequence clearly shows the past in order of events but with the twist of if you get out, it's over. That tree could have explained a lot about the trader and his origins.
Thank you for playing these horror games! I have an anxiety disorder that makes me unable to play horror/scary games without having a panic attack or getting crazy paranoid, and these videos help me enjoy the games without the panic.
If you want to get into horror I reccomend just hucking yourself into the deep end as much as possible, while also watching alot of "BRS" and "Makeing of" things, as well as stuff that examines the mechanics of horror, this can help keep you grounded.
Yeah, in game, that thing can light the area pretty well but it consumes batteries incredibly fast. It is better to stick to the lantern that you don't need to be actively holding or the normal flashlight that doesn't light as much but makes the batteries last.
I don't think it's only to avoid spoilers. Mark has said many times that he doesn't want tips (unless he specifically asks for them) because he prefers figuring things out on his own, even if it means that he doesn't get to experience everything in that specific game, or 100% it. He also batch-records, so many times, there's no point in reading the tips people leave for him anyway because by the time we get to see certain episodes in a series, Mark will have finished the game. Which is the case here, too. I believe he mentioned having finished this game 1 or 2 weeks ago in a member stream.
@Mystery Womam: If you're asking about the batch-recording, then yes, Mark does it for a lot of his series to be able to post videos as regularly as possible.
