I played Auto Modellista as a teenager at a friend's house, but it took about a decade before I remembered the title of the game. Thank you BlueTag for invoking fond memories of that time ❤❤
@@ShanerTheGrey To be honest, Auto Modellista is a fairly obscure title, especially among younger generations of gamers who didn't grow up playing on the PS2.
I had this when I was just a preteen and I loved it so much. It’s so nostalgic hearing the announcer shouting out “AUTO MODELLISTA!!!” When you load it up, the music, the art style and menu type, everything was so comfy. I also wish more driving games would take on a more unique art style like this did, I thought NFS Unbound could’ve been so much better if it leaned into the cartoony style of its character models and smoke clouds/effects
I love Auto Modellista's style, as you said, It could have been made today and still hold up to standards. We need more games that deviate from realism.
I think racing games should only be sim realistic. Some kid in a bmw understeered off the mountain right in front on me trying to drive fast, I slid down the hill to see if he was ok, he was thankfully. I was just trying to keep a conversation going until fire and ems showed up. Anyway I asked he played any racing games and he with replied with Need for speed lol. I really wanted to say if he played gran turismo with a wheel that wouldn’t have happened but I didn’t have the heart to say it.
@@bholden9711 Go play Assetto Corsa on PC with mods, you have literally everything you can think of, touge, drift, circuit racing, drag, every car discipline. Even has classic 90s drift spots in Japan, also Shuto express way, the WHOLE of thte Shuto expressway :) The rabbit hole is endless. There is a couple of videos on my channel if you want to see.
If anyone wants to play a racing game with a similar art style, there's one called Inertial Drift that's on Steam. Obviously it's more drift-focused, but the art style of it clearly takes direct inspiration from Auto Modellista.
The Tommykaira ZZII is one of the prettiest and coolest supercars ever made. Like a Japanese McLaren F1 or Saleen S7. The ZZII wasn't at F1 level of performance, and unfortunately never left the prototype phase, but it is very cool.
Really liked how well the Cell Shading looks and the music on top of it, haven't tried this out personally yet but it looks like a lot of fun to be had here
Auto Modelista is one of the most beautiful and interesting car games! Unique cell-shaded art style, tons and tons of customization, and so many scenic locations. I absolutely adore it and I'm glad you are making a video on it!
Korea made a free MMORPG called SkidRush (DriftCity in U.S.) with art style ripped straight off of Auto Medellista. A bit grindy like most free MMORPGs, but pretty good storyline and beatable without microtransactions. It was my childhood and looking back, a one of a kind game. There are no CarPGs anymore.
Seeing the last part, well, guess now we just gotta wait for some blessed madlad to either port the US content to the european version, or fix the terrible physics of the US version, heh Nice video 👍
Been playing this game for a long time actually.. none of my friends knew anything about it.. back when it was a new game it felt very cool to me having the chance to build and customize my garage. I loved the graphics and the general style of the game.. i think it's unique.. absolutely not the best, but it's worth to give it a try
Thankfully I was in the "did play" group, loved it, the style was superb, shame the physics weren't quite up there, but a union of this and Enthusia would have been tip-top.
5:07 it is worth it like youre placing your trophies for your own personal garage also pretty much every car is unlocked and there is no currency in this game which means you can try everything and have fun with it it is heaven for me
I gotta say, i really enjoyed those auto modelista streams. What an amazing game that was, mixed with your Charismatic energy was so good. Btw, i love the new animations you gave for yourself in this video. Your racoon/beaver/mouse/squirrel is becoming so much more expressive. Love it bluetag. Have an awesome day
I played the US version, it was my first contact. Yes, is kinda hard to steering, but if you be patient to build a tunning for your car, you can make a huuuge difference in the game. Even in mountain tracks
The best game I ever played lol. It was my favorite game growing up I spent DAYS playing the game until the disc wore out. Could never find another copy until YEARS later after I bought myself a ps2 on Amazon. If our favorite beaver ever decides to do a video on it I'd be SO ecstatic for it to get some recognition in our current time lol.
I was 17 when this game released, I loved it, it was overshadowed just under a year later though by NFS Underground, then Underground 2 a year later. Those were some great times :)
Love how he says there isn't much customisation, and you can only really change 2 to three bumpers for every car. But that's literally still better than what you could say for Forza Horizon these days; customisation in those games were a massive let down.
I beat the US version of Auto Modellista. Handling Physics are heavily focused on oversteer, but if you got a delicate finger and know when to slow down you can keep the car from getting too squirrley. The Toyota Sports 800 with a Supra 2JZ engine swap was very OP in this game (swaps were unlocked after finishing 1st place in every event in the story mode), even though you can't tune a engine swapped car much it was wicked fast at the start of a race and on any course with a long straight-away. Also, in Japan this version of the game was re-released as Auto Modellista: US-Tuned. Not sure if this was the same for the European version though.
Not only did I play it, but I own it for PS2. There is one cool thing you can do with the old, tiny Toyota 600 I think it is called. You can put a big v8 engine in it or a big turbo v6. It make that tiny care ridiculously fast.
I have the US version of the game on Xbox and the physics aren't the only problem, one of the secret cars is the Shelby Cobra and it's laughably OP to the point you can win every race with it. It has a top speed of over 220mph/355kph when fully upgraded and accelerates like mad, and it doesn't care if you're using slick tires during the rain because it'll still stop on a dime and make turns no problem.
I had no idea Auto Modellista US was so much worse. I remember buying it for XBox because I really liked the artstyle, only to absolutely hate the physics. I'd try again every once in a while when talking with some of my online Euro friends about it, just to think they were crazy for liking such a janky game. I feel so deceived... lol
You know, its kinda funny because i didn't have so many troubles with the US version because i tuned the suspension of my car to induce much more understeer.
Auto Modellista was a great game. One of the first games that allowed you to swap engines and add performance components that actually mattered and changed performance the way they would have in a real car. The cell shading style was a great design choice and made the speed you were going feel real. I think I still have this on my Xbx hard drive and I may just have to fire it up again.
I remember playing this as a kid with the US version. I can vaguely remember the controls being weird but I just thought I was bad at the game. The customization of cars and garage kept me entertained, as thats what I remember the most about it. That and the sound track and graphics. Im glad this game isnt forgotten. Hopefully someone can modify the US version to have the controls of the EU version, so we can have the extra content + better controls.
Idk How i didnt played this back when i had a PS2 Since i had ALL Burnout games for the PS2, Midnight club 3 Dub Edition, GT4, some NFS games and other racing games i dont remember (they were ALL Pirated games, this is How i had so much games)
I had this game. I really wanted to love it. The concepts were pretty damn nice, the anime-style cell-shaded artwork was gorgeous, but... I really didn't enjoy the driving itself. It had so much potential, but failed to deliver exciting racing to me. I mean look at the clip at 3:31 on the video: 227km/h (141mph), and it looks and feels dreadfully slow. That kind of speed on roads where the walls are so close should feel terrifying and yet I felt bored playing it.
This game was one of many that threw its hat in the ring to compete and beat gran turismo at the time. Although they did well but couldn’t compete with gt 3 and eventually gt 4. Though only one that stay relevant and competitive with gran turismo is forza motorsports. I do wish capcom one day make a return to this game and make a new one for fun
After beating the American campaign, I can confirm, it IS fun though. I have played both versions, and you can get used to the weird drifting. It is very bad and awkward but... it kinda feels very cool to slide around so much. It is very finnicky and awkward so I dont blame anyone for not giving it a chance. However, the EU version has so much understeer and the handbrake is so punishing it makes driving kinda normal and with the easy AI, the game is just easy.
More unique games: Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 and Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2. These whole TXR series are Japanese weirdness and they dont actually have an ingame tutorial, its just that every tips and tutorials related to the game was written in poorly translated english from japanese and many games actually didnt ship with theser tutorials. Various things such as music choice (pure japanese anime style), what you thought was the ending is not the actual ending, the true ending is something else, some racers only challenge you IF you do certain things. I didnt know that there was tire wear in TXR3 as the game never tells you this, I thought only the engine overheated. TXR3 & TXR:D2 are the best of them and are my all time favourite obscure games. TXR is highway racing inspired by Wangan Midnight and TXR:Drift are Initial D inspired drift and rally racers.
I agree with the graphics part, it would be cool to see more racing games with unique styles like this, but car people often want realism. They were all literally screaming (in the bad way) when NFS unbound came out, because it was kind of cartoonish
The racing games are full of realistic graphics that it's kinda tiring. Auto Modellista is that one racing game which says that racing games can look cartoonish, drive great (at least in JP/EU version) and still be awesome. I'm looking forwards to mod my PS2 and play this helluva neat game.
Quality over quantity. A Need For Speed game might have "more bumpers", but they're usually hideous because they're not real parts and they're designed by someone at the studio with limited car design knowledge. This game actually had real world aero, which is totally sick and explains why the cars look so good and the style has aged so well. I love Need For Speed: Most Wanted but most body kit options were absolutely hideous in that game, which would've been avoided had they included more real world aero like this game.
... But i did play it... I actually rented it one weekend in my early 20s and beat it that weekend. I remember thinking that it was neat and fun to play, but was disappointed in how short it was.
You reminded me it's been 20 years since I wished for a 3rd title adding Euro cars and perhaps more locations. For the handling, I would count as get use of driving without assists similar to a race car. Still, the best way to play is got both OG and US content added on Japanese edition-the game's main focus was about online and stylish anime style, and there's authentic Japanese license plates similar to Tokyo Extreme Racer did.
i wish i could remember the full name but my buddy had a NHRA drag racing game on the ps2 that let you customize the engines like crazy, ever wonder what a 8 liter single cylinder does? only 400rpm with 8000ftbl of torque. crazy game.
I havent watched yet. But its such a coincidence that you post this because ive been looking into buying a copy of it after hearing about it recently lol.
There wasnt that many body kits back then. It was really cool to see the bodykits they added because they were all real bodykits from big all the big cool brands from japan. I still get giddy thinking about the RX-7 mazdaspeed body kit with the fog lights.
Auto Modelista is in my top 10 games ever - I fkn loved it - I played it for hours on end - loved the customization from actual tuning companies - vs non licensed stuff that became so popular but also so cringe ( need for speed )
My copy is sitting in my closet with my other old consoles. NES/SNES/N64/PS/PS2/Xbox/360/XboxOne/PS4. Yes all of them work. The PS2 games alone need their own box. XD
Played this game many years ago on the gamecube, US version. I had no issues with the handling at all, maybe car setup has something to do with, but I remember loving this game.
This was the first game I ever got with my ps2 👀 I still remember the christmas morning unwrapping the ps2 and my copy auto modellista, so many memories, also the reason I love rotaries so much, my rx3 decimated all ❤
I once saw a drifting game with realistic controls and damage playing on a ps2 or xbox at an auto salon, i've never found it since. I think it was japanese
The RU-vid algorithm knows what I’m up to doesn’t it? I literally just started playing this game again today, I got tired of the US version’s dogshit handling so I found a copy of the PAL version and have been playing that for a few hours. I took a break, checked my phone and now I get to watch a video about that exact game. I wish the PAL version had more cars like the US one, US had a viper, mustang, and some more American cars.
