I sure hope that Harley keeps the Pan America around for keeps. Its a great bike. I hear some disparaging words about alot of dealers rathering rhat it go away. Got that when HD shut down its ownership of Buell. I owned ten of them from 95 to their demise. There were two models that were failures but the rest were good bikes.. The Pan Am is a great all around machine I would like to wear mine out.
BMW has had this since '14 and calls it HSC (Hill Start Control). It's offered in standard and pro configurations. A switchable Pro mode will auto engage on gradients at 5% or greater. Will hold for up to 10 minutes, and engages in neutral, 1st or 2nd as long as the kickstand is up. I think it freaks ppl out the first few times they're exposed to it, but once you're used to it you never want another bike without it.
Thanks for the insight. Coming from mercedes benz cars that have this feature activated in exactly the same way by pumping the brake pedal (while most other cars either have a button or a simple hill start assist that holds the brake for a few more seconds after pedal release) this feature came across very naturally to me and i simply used it from day one. Never had imagined it is such a rare thing, but i remember talking to a GS owner who always complained becaus his HH-Assist always kicked in when he stopped on an incline automatically, thus ruining his attempt when he planned on reversing the bike downhill to turn around. Harley did a great job at making the feature easy to use and unobstrusive at the same time.
Hey, Larry! It's actually the rear brake that sets AVH (automatic vehicle hold) or VH (vehicle hold). Since the front and rear brakes are linked, the front brake can be used to set AVH, but the "pump" has to really hard in order to get enough pressure on the rear system. I always set AVH on my 2023 Pan America by using the rear brake pedal. I use this feature all the time, once I finally figured out how to reliably set it. It does work in neutral, but it only works with the engine running. When you talk about this, you should show the dash and the indicator light that indicates when AVH is active. I was NOT aware that there is a timer. Later today I will test this. I have never had mine release when I did not expect it (due to timer). One thing that is frustrating is that the HD owner's manual DOES NOT really address AVH... how to use it, how to set/release, and so on. It's almost like the tech writers don't really know it's there either. Thanks for the video. marcus
Thank you for the input, it is a great feature. Truth is I never noticed there was no info in the owners manual. That does seem strange that it is not mentioned.
hi Larry, 👋 I checked the AVH (hill hold) time out today on my 2023 Pan America Special; indeed, it does time out in five minutes. I was not aware of that before. Thank you. Just before it cuts out at the five minute mark, the AVH indicator flashes on the dash for a few seconds, then it releases. This is good to know; adjusting helmet, zipping gloves, opening vents better happen in less than five min. It would be a shocker to have AVH release on a down slope (like my driveway) as a surprise! marcus
When the pan first came out it had a much shorter hill hold time. If I remember it was one minute. Fortunately Harley seen that was a mistake and corrected that. I’m a HH addict! Lol
I have 2020 SGS and will be buying Pan America soon? I absolutely Love the Hill hold feature its just nice to have and it works flawlessly the only way they could have made it better is to make it work in Neutral! and it sounds like they have A+ in my book
@@yeagerscycle3450 You have a lot of inside information about the pan America, perfect I love it. 😊 Thank you very much. But I am not familiar with the adjustment of the arh. I solved it by copy the rain Modus and define the arh there. Is there an other way to do that? I need help, by the way others too. A video about that arh would be great. Best regards from Germany Matthias
@@matthiasdrei2616 the ARH is not adjustable. It is either on or off. You are able to disable ARH with some of the custom modes. Hope this helps. I will try and do a video on this. Thanks
So i can't get this working on my '22 PAS for the life of me. Just got back from a 1k trip over the long weekend, the bike performed great in very extreme heat. Only had the screen blank out a few times. But everytime i stopped on a hill i tried all sorts of ways to get hill hold to work. No dice! I made sure its selected in the options but still wont work. Should i take it to the dealer?
@@yeagerscycle3450 Didnt make it to the dealer but i have gotten it to work using the foot brake. Hand brake still wont work for me but i've got it working well with the foot method!
