The Pokemon series had Infrared connectivity in HeartGold and SoulSilver. It was used primarily for communicating with the Pokewalker accessory. Later, Black, White, Black 2, and White 2 also had built in IR connectivity for use with the C-Gear function. There may have been other DS games that also had an IR port built in, but those are the 6 that I have seen.

@@IkBenBenG the way solar panels work is not quite like you think... They aren't 'smart' devices in that sense... All it is, is a sensor that detects UV rays, as that is what the sun produces, so any source of UV light will work...
@IkBenBenG
@IkBenBenG 5 лет назад
I know how solar panels work, but solar panels and light sensors usually react to any kind of light which is bright enough. If you've ever used a solar powered calculator then you probably noticed that they work perfectly fine with atrificial light. I may have worded my comment in a confusing way, but I was just wondering if the sensor just detected light in general like most of them, or if it was actually designed in such a way that it reacts (almost) exclusively to sunlight.

If you you want to go REALY retro, theres the Starpath Supercharger for the Atari 2600. While not a game itself, you connected a tape deck to it and loaded up games the company produced on audio cassettes (which was a common form of data storage for computers of that time.) While the games themselves were very impressive for the 2600 due to the Superchargers additional RAM/ROM (including a very faithful recreation of Frogger that outperformed the cart version) other companies were very hesitant to publish games for it as piracy was extremely easy and the product ultimately failed. MP3s of the games can be found on the internet if you are able to find one of these carts (I got one on ebay for pretty cheap)
@flatfingertuning727
@flatfingertuning727 5 лет назад
There was an authorized release of the cartridges on CD a bit over a decade ago, entitled IIRC "Stella's Got a New Brain". The disk contains the information both as audio (allowing use of a portable CD player) and as computer data (allowing the use of a program to load data). The original developers, according to what I read, used an Apple II's cassette port with suitable software to load games onto their cartridges during development. BTW, piracy could have been made more difficult by including a player with the Starpath and having it calibrated to work with frequencies beyond what most cassette recorders could copy.

I've seen action games use dial-up multiplay before (see Virtual-ON Netlink, which allows the player to choose between the central server or a straight P2P link via directly dialing the other player; three guesses which one can still be used today). My guess is some synchronization algorithms and shaving the signals to their bare essentials, such as only transmitting what buttons are being pressed, is what allowed it to work. Although, analog phone systems are less latent than many digital solutions, from what I've heard.

Really? I remember it being advertised pretty heavily around the time it came out. The 2nd boktai is far superior to the first one, with it giving you options should there be no sunlight. In thev1st one, when the sun goes down your pretty much boned, although with the first one you can customize the Gun del Sol, the second one its just a shooter that fires depending on your current enchantment (but it does charge shots). Theres major differences between the two, with b2 basically being better, and the puzzles were GLORIOUS! The light sensor in Boktai is actually a UV light sensor. So literally you "have" to use actual sunlight. (Or black light. Or in my case a plasma globe. You know, those glass spheres that make purple lightning that is attracted to your fingers when you touch it. Turns out they put out a lot of uv. After the novelty was over I just switched to my game shark...) Anyway, the problem with it trying to force you to use real sunlight by only reacting to UV is that nearly ALL windows are designed to filter out and block UV. So you actually had to go outside. Back the day when the game was first released I was on a gaming forum chatting about the game. A girl posted that she had been playing the game while holding her GBA out a window and.... accidently sun-burned her thumbs lol

The SABA "Video play system Fairchild" (known as "Fairchild channel F" in the US) was the very first video game console with real ROM cartridges. It is based on a 4-bit processor and has not more than 64 bytes of RAM. The screen resolution is approx. 100x60 pixels in total. This system does not only had the very first cartridges, it also had the very first unusual cartridge as well: Chess! Due to the limitations of the system, the chess cartridge contains a complete Z80 based "home computer" to do the trick.

If you don’t mind me asking, what music do you use for your transitions? I know the composers are listed in the description, but would you mind sharing the individual track name? I really like it!

Just a couple interesting FYIs - Hudson did a whole bunch with IR built into cartridges and unique game functions; look into the HuC-1 and how it influenced the built-in IR function on the GBC. in fact, that's why some emulators can handle things like Pokemon G/S/C Mystery Gift or TCG1/2 Card Pop, but only from the Japanese games. The other interesting thing is that emulator authors took longer to crack the GBC & GBA RTC (Real-Time Clock) function found in, again, Pokemon than they did Boktai's solar charger. Oh, and one other thing; when you talk about Robopon and Hudson, consider mentioning that they were best known for the Bomberman and Bonk series; and that Atlus is connected to Shin Megami Tensei and its spinoffs.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, along with Black and White and Black 2 and White 2, had infrared technology built into the cartridges, from memory - for HGSS, it was to communicate with the Pokéwalker, and BW and BW2, it was to trade with each other and stuff without using local wireless. They did this because the DS line lacked native infrared, so they had to push it into the cartridge.

Saw the Boktai cartridge on the thumbnail and thought: Hey someone's talking about Boktai! I never actually played the games as a kid, then again I never heard about it or played the first two until about maybe a few years ago. But it would be pretty cool to see another game do something with solar power.

Another disk with a gimmick is Vib Ribbon! It's a rhythm game, and the entire game's graphics and code are small enough to fit in the PS1's RAM. So you put the disk in, boot the game up, and then you can take the disk out and swap in any CD with music on it, and play those songs in the game. It's also adorable.

Not completely a game cartridge, but also not only an accessory: The Sega Dreamcast VMUs. When you didn't use them for saving games you could take them out of the controller and play minigames on them.

GB KISS was used with plenty of other Gameboy games. They're all Japan only, though. They didn't look like Robopon though since they didn't include a speaker they're just normal shaped carts with a super dark transparent purple color.

Regarding the IR sensor feature, I was about to bring up the Bomberman Max games for GBC. Then I looked again, and it turns out the GBC actually has its own IR sensor, used by Bomberman and a couple other games. Robopon is actually unique in having the sensor built into the cart itself. Guess this video taught me something else!

Regarding rumble, for what it's worth, my primary sense is touch (rather than sight or sound), so I tend to like haptic feedback. It's not necessary, to be sure, but it's a nice feature for some of us.

Dance Dance Revolution 2nd ReMix in Japan featured two additional "append" expansions that would alter the song list of the former. They're usually known as 2nd Append Club v1 and Club v2. To use them, you had to boot up 2nd ReMix, and use the Disc Change feature, and then insert the Append you wanted to play. If you wanted to switch, you had to relaunch 2nd ReMix and do the disc swap again. Also, all the Japanese versions of DDR featured an unlock key for the prior game. All you had to do was create a save file for the prior game (e.g. create a save file in third mix and then go into 4th mix), go to Memory Card, and then User Support. The game would check for the appropriate save file, prompt to overwrite, and then unlock everything in the game. This was especially handy for games like DDR Str!ke (Extreme 2 in the US), DDR Supernova, and DDR Supernova 2. Those games could only unlock new songs by playing a "Dance Master Mode," which was an abysmally boring story mode that forced you to play songs on the easiest difficulty. Even if you could clear Oni charts. Ugh... Sadly, this feature never showed up on US mixes. Much to my chagrin...

I'm sure somebody has probably said it already but you didn't seem to know about Boktai 3 which only released in Japan and still had a crossover in Megaman Battle Network 6, though it was removed from the English release. Surprisingly though it's still coded in the game and some pieces of it work.

Number 4 Hoshizora Navi is claimed in this video to have "accelerometers" however I think that measuring only accelleration would make absolute orientation tracking to find stars and constellations in the actual sky these would be next to useless. More likely it has a magnetometer / hall sensor and maybe a gyro for orientation.

Boktai got a Japan exclusive being the third game. I played a rom in my computer because it was the only way I could get to play it on a language that I could understand. Any ways is sad that I couldn't get an official release. The game had the stuff I loved the most of the two previous games and improvements. After that Lunar Knights makes a lot more of sense.

I have one of the Boktai games, and was really hyped when it got connectivity to a MegaMan Battle Network game… I also had Lunar Knights, and was bummed it didn't have built-in solar functionality-since DS systems have a built in clock it could use, where GBA systems did not. Was more bummed to see the art style change. It was still an awesome game though… I wonder what happend to my Lunar Knignts…
