The best bass channel on YT is not the one with a million subscribers. It’s this one. For the intermediate player who wants to learn meaningful licks and fills to move to the next level, this is where it is at. Great channel. Been playing keys for 40 years but never been more than a beginner on bass. This station can move one to the next level. The million subscriber channel may be entertaining, but it wont change the way you play. Thanks Dan.

Thanks for this! It's a great demonstration of using the diatonic chords of C major, which are the same chords of A minor, except for the E Dominant, which as you mentioned comes from A Harmonic Minor. The diatonic modes can be applied to each chord. Ami is Aeolian, Dmi is Dorian, Gmaj is Mixolydian, C maj is Ionian, F maj is Lydian, B dim is Locrian, E7 is Phrygian Dominant. Brilliant!

Great job ! I played this song on bass night after night in Top 40 bands back in the 70's but I never took the time to analyze it in the depth and level you've taken it. It seems we were always under pressure to keep learning songs at a fast pace to keep up with all the requested songs that successful, full time top 40 bands were expected to know. The usual routine was that a cassette would be passed around the band members, you'd learn your part fast and then pass it on to then next player. I'm tempted to go back and re--look at much of that material back then and see everything that I was missing ......... Much appreciated and you are a fine bass player. ......Nice bass and tone !

It’s all subjective. This bass has more presence and bite than a mellower sounding P bass when both are played in isolation. That sounds ‘better’ to many ears even though the P in a recording is arguably ‘better’ in many situations. All slightly different flavours!

I love this lesson! I’m really interested in getting to the bottom of why different modes are played over the same chord. For instance, you play Aeolian over Am7, but Dorian over Dm7. I’m guessing it has to do with scale degrees. Could you possibly point me to a resource that explains this?
@OnlineBassCourses

Am i right in saying that the Em7 is replaced by a E7 (arpeggio) that is based off the phrygian dominant mode (a mode from the A harmonic minor scale?) because the 'pull of the Em7' isn't strong enough to resolve the progression?

I don't think that's right. Their version has all the same chords as 0:34 , except they use a B7 instead of a Bm7b5.

This lesson is definitely not for the beginners, I can do it, it’ll take me commiting some time to do it. Which is my issue
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Год назад
Committing enough time to learning a craft is a lot of people’s issue. It’s tough as people have jobs and families etc. But, if you truly want to be really good, you do have to put in quite a lot of consistent work. No way around that unfortunately!

Do you really think. People like Jimi , Bebe , people like that knew Dm or the whatever you're talking about? They just played . Doubt they knew a scale or note
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 2 года назад
Agreed. I've mentioned a similar point numerous times in my videos. It doesn't, however, mean you shouldn't learn it or can't make great music because you know some theory. Anyway, they probably *did* know a lot!

@@OnlineBassCourses sorry Dan, frustration was getting the better of me! I DO appreciate your video content. When videos turn to modes scales and chords and all that goes with it, I hit a brick wall! @OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Год назад
@@johnmcguigan6717 it sounds like you need to go to the very basics. Learn a major scale, then a triad, then an arpeggio, then how to form a chord. Then major scale harmony, then modes. It’s really simple once it clicks and once you learn it properly.
