All valuations were correct at the time of broadcast. This majolica tea set made by Minton might not be everyone's cup of tea however it's still worth a fair amount. Hugh Scully and the experts from Antiques Roadshow take a look at some fantastic antiques and the history and stories surrounding them. This clip was filmed in Merthyr Tydfil in 1991.

David Batty and then John Bly in one clip, two of my favourite experts on the roadshow. Their knowledge, passion, and whimsical playfulness was the stuff of legend.

@@garycody1929 well he wasn't all charm and nicety. But he was so brilliant at hiding his enthusiasm and love of an object he could make you feel like you had nothing, then bit by bit, let you know it was a thing of real beauty. A lot of oriental pottery and sculpture remained mysterious to many, and he was the man who revealed it's importance and beauty to many of us. I loved his style.

Nobody sets a beautiful dinner table at home anymore as a matter o f@ct most know how. Let alone have the China to do it. As far as sitting down to tea they have no clue. I love to do a a full on tea ceremony ritual. It’s relaxing and very zen. Manners went out the window with the paper cup coffee crowd today.

I saw David Batty in a recent road show, he was old and frail and could hardly hold the japanese vase he was commenting on. It hurt me tremendously to see him like this; not to be able to hold the things he loves so dearly.

Omg! She does and she’s lovely..if this was filmed in 2000, for example, and the guy bought the furniture in 1970 (30 years) for 35 Guineas, with inflation and in US dollars, that’s $820 in 2000 and $1,425 in today’s dollars! I’d be hesitant too! £1,400 in 2000 was £2,128 in 2023 ($3,711 in 2023) ..would have thought a beautiful thing like that that’s almost 400 years old would be worth more!

This is the kind of item that will always come back into fashion. No doubt. With this age and style it has doubtless been worth much more since this evaluation. (edit: The coffer chest I mean).

I don’t like majolica, so I’d sell it in a heartbeat. The problem with this show is that their ‘estimates’ and the actual sale price are often divergent.

Have you watched antiques road trip? it is almost impossible to give a completely accurate estimate of a sale price. One of the very best experts on the antiques road trip programme, Paul Laidlaw, bought an antique camera for £60; he thought it might sell for £200- £300. At auction it went for £20,000.

@@Djm8520 The "market value" is hard to estimate when there are only a few people willing to pay top price for something rarely seen. The art of the auctioneer includes getting two wealthy collectors to compete in public, so that ego takes over from common sense. The sum paid then goes down in the records, but there's no telling what will happen if a similar object turns up a week or a year later.

A house for £50 - would have been a really crappy house; the average house price in the UK in 1926 was £619, according to a recent review., so cheap terraced house would probably have been about £250.

My mother was offered a 2 up 2 down in 1964 - 65 for £90 ! It still stands today and is 2 or 3 miles north of Luton . Her parents wouldn't lend her the money .

No it wasn't 1991 - mentions the last Minton tea set he saw was in 1993, so either he is wrong, or it must be after that.

@@peterlarkin762 No definitely 1993. The road show did come from Merthyr Tydfil in 1991, but there are two clips; possibly only the second came from Merthyr in 1991. Or he just misspoke, or it's from another later show.
