Some of downtown Detroit looks nicer than alot of streets in downtown Toronto (where I live). That says alot considering how much growth and investment is occurring in the latter. Better, wider sidewalks, more landscaping, grander buildings, etc. Nice to see as you hear so many negative things about Detroit. Hopefully downtown Detroit can continue on its upward trajectory.
I was literally just thinking this Consider Woodward vs Spadina, and while yes one is in the financial district of the city its in and the other isn't, it's clear that Woodward is significantly nicer. Younge north of Dundas until roughly College, same idea

Yes, downtown Detroit has made quite the revival in recent years. Love going there and spend quite a bit of time downtown. However, outside of the downtown core, Detroit is such a shit show. So many empty lots, burned out buildings, long ago vacated factories. So sad to see, since Detroit was once a beautiful, bustling city. I hope that the city one day returns to its former glory. Though, the odds of that happening is a long shot.
While Detroit contributed greatly to music pre-1970, the global techno music movement is definitely something worth mentioning. People all over the world are aware. There's a huge festival downtown on Memorial Day weekend and people come from all over to attend. London, Berlin and other European cities have huge techno scenes and all look to Detroit as the birthplace of the music.
That's whats up I've lived in the D my entire life and have always heard how dangerous is is. I love to hear that you feel safer here versus NYC. Ty. God bless all.
Chris, thanks for this video, I was Born and Raised in Detroit, I was laid off from Chrysler in 1979, Never to be called back, So I had to move to find Work, I moved to Arizona and found a good job, But I miss so much about Detroit Going to the Car shows at Cobo Hall when i was young, Going to Greek Town, Seeing all the Bands that played at the Grande Ballroom, The Eastown Theater, Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, Ect. I Love Detroit, it is in my Blood, Such Great Memories,

It really is, the riverfront by itself is better than anything I can find in the ATL, it has its nice parts to match Atlanta’s, and its architecture I put up with NYC and CHI. A very underrated place to live whose hoods give it a bad name, but it definitely has some gems you don’t find many other places.

But during my high-school years' Detroit had 1.3 million citizens,but Atlanta has NEVER even had over a HALF-million residents!! But chawbacons' down there CLAIM the entire REGION of northern Georgia(38 COUNTIES,144 separate municipalities)AS"Atlanta"!!! But the CITY of Atlanta has never actually had 500,00 residents in its' city-proper!! 😂
As a Canadian who has lived and worked in Detroit, I am so happy to see the current turnaround. It’s a great city and has stunning architecture. It definitely went through some rough times due to corruption and racism. But the city has a great Mayor and he and his administration have made great strides in the revitalization of the city. It has beautiful scenery sitting on the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair and fabulous restaurants. This video doesn’t show it, but there is always activity going on with sports events, theatres, restaurants and museums. Love Detroit!
The Detroit turn around is absolutely not because of the mayor-the city could not get any lower after the bankruptcy. The mayor just got out of the way for the first time; Dan Gilbert is 💯 responsible for the turnaround.
@@9chilidog No question Gilbert played a huge role. And that’s what they needed…someone with financial backing. I didn’t imply the mayor was solely responsible. But he gets credit for getting the money people on board. After the corruption of Kilpatrick that was no easy task.
@@Lakeshore14 , I agree totally, I live downtown since 1990, and I’ve been through numerous mayor administrations. Just about everyone of them could never get their act together, could never get the city and suburbs together, tended to have woefully inadequate support staff. Mayor Duggan, I feel has been superb for the city and his overwhelming majority votes each term has proven this. He gets between 70 and 80% of all Detroits votes, that’s amazing, why? Because he’s doing a superb job considering the devastation before. Detroit is really turning into a nice city
As a visitor transiting from Amtrak to Canada's Via Rail through downtown Detroit, I was very impressed and surprised by it. It's just an overnight each time, but I've chosen the route several times now specifically for the built-in night there. It was much cleaner than most downtowns and not nearly as unsafe as media/history might imply. Coney Dogs are an A+ choice, 24/7! Great City! Great to watch its actual Renaissance unfold.

I'm from Detroit, River Rouge actually, and I don't ever remember downtown being run-down. Even during the hard times, I was never concerned with my safety downtown. Every year the Techno Festival in Heart Plaza, the Ho-Down country music festival (yep the Detroit has a huge country fan base. No city like it. I live in the Bronx now, but I'm heading back for the first time since 2015, next week. Can't wait to see the changes.
I grew up in Detroit but moved to Chicago area in 1976. It was good to see downtown. My husband & I worked there in the late 60s. He at Greyhound & me at Crowley's. Anyway, just as an aside, everyone we knew referred to Cobo Center as Cobo Hall. Keep up the good work. You do an amazing amount of work into these videos.
This actually looks like a nice city and amazingly clean unlike NY and LA. Do you guys from there want to keep this a secret or something. Definitely not what I expected video touring Detroit!
10 years ago it wasn't like this. Right before the pandemic is when it started coming together and feeling decent. It took decades of work before that though.
Thank you for a great video! I haven't spent any time in downtown Detroit since 2010, it's great to see the progress since then. I'm definitely looking forward to my next visit, one of the things I will definitely do is the River Walk.
Downtown Detroit is absolutely amazing. One of the nicest downtowns ever! People talk about shootings and stuff when they hear it, well downtown doesn’t get that too much. More of the crime happens in the northwest part of the city. (Especially around 7 and 8 mile roads). The downtown area has definitely been improved over the years and is so much nicer than it was 10 years ago.
Very nice- I have always liked Detroit and have been there a few times- first being in 1989 with my aunt, sisters going into Canada via the tunnel to Canada and coming back via the Ambassador Bridge. In 2006 I went back to Detroit for a WWE show at the Cobo Arena, a year later- WrestleMania- and again in 2010. In 2010 I spent time at the Greektown neighborhood and did the People Mover- great video and it bought back a lot of fun memories- and it is nice to see more of downtown Detroit!
Great job, Chris on your always honest and well-balanced portrayal of Downtown Detroit. It has been years since I was down there, and it is so nice to see the facelift it has received. After years of neglect and corruption, it is nice to see an administration get the city back on track! Hopefully, the next step will be the continued removal of the abandoned homes in the neighborhoods throughout Detroit.
I love Detroit, even lived there for awhile in the late 70's. It just makes me sad to have seen if fail so much, when the music and the history lives in my heart. As much as I'm rooting for Detroit, too much economic wealth in the hands of just a few. Investments needs much more diversity for competition, one reason and I say one reason why projects are always so delayed. If there was competition, things would get done much sooner. Another sad thing, no traffic no people. It looks empty all the time. Sure, downtown is the best that's it has been in a long while, but it's not alive like other cities. I'm still rooting for Detroit and all of Detroit and thank you for uploading this really wonderful video.

Great video, but it really can not be understated how bad the city, the region, and especially the downtown area need MASS transit that is reliable and frequent. All those downtown condos and apartments being built are great until you realize its hard to get anywhere without a car and when living in the middle of a dense downtown of a large city you really don't have anywhere to park a car. I also would like to see MDOT move forward with their plans to remove I-375 which leads nowhere and reconnect downtown to the waterfront. Nonetheless it is great to see so many people in downtown and so much development going, just hope the city leaders can be not corrupt for five minutes and the tax revenue from the downtown boom can be invested in the public schools and other public services and the neighborhoods can make a comeback and Detroit can once again become a world class city.
Legitimate mass transit is very unlikely to happen, given how many NIMBY suburbs decided to opt out of even the insufficient SMART bus service years ago. People have been relying more and more on their own personal vehicles for several generations now, so even people who still commute to Detroit for work often prefer to burn a lot of gas driving solo or in a carpool
Filling in 375 is going to make traffic worse for people coming from Oakland County. They either have to take city streets from 75, or out of the way via The Davison and Lodge. Build some more pedestrian bridges if connecting neighborhoods is an issue. Mass transit is not the answer, in fact it will cost taxpayers far more than any potential benefits. People won’t use it. Plus, look at how slow the QLine is. It’s sometimes faster to walk down Woodward.
Detroit lacks the density and is too spread out to support a rapid rail system, but commuter trains from Jackson and Ann Arbor and Pontiac would bring people into the city to work, shop and party downtown. What y'all waiting for?
Your historical commentary is great, and the video itself is an excellent refresher for navigating downtown Detroit for those of us who live in the suburbs. Regarding the music scene, don't forget the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, which under its new music director Jader Benjamini is superb. Orchestra Hall on Woodward is fully restored and gorgeous. Oops, I think Orchestral Hall is in midtown (strictly speaking) and therefore outside the boundary of this video!
Great videos with lots of research. Also Stephen Ross recently moved the University of Michigan Innovation Center from Gratiot to Grand River in the "District Detroit." Take it with a grain of salt because it won't break ground till at least 2023. If it does happen then hopefully that will further fill up surface parking lots in that area.
Another great video Chris. I really appreciate your work showing how much Detroit has been improved. I go down there a lot for concerts and other events. Aside from hotels, there are a great selection of AitBnBs for much more reasonable nightly rates. I usually stay overnight down there, due to the horrid traffic situations after any major event like that. It's much easier to access the expressways in the morning. One thing I was surprised didn't get mentioned was the Detroit Institute of Arts, It's a lovely, huge museum. It may be outside of this video's scope, but it is worth a mention as an area attraction.
Thanks, great video Chris.., you have shown much of what’s going on downtown and midtown areas now, I live here, it’s a fabulous place to live with the amount of things to do, the recreational opportunities, ,Bike and walkways, an absolutely incredible riverfront now , sports and entertainment complexes, restaurants, retail, pro sports and theater and museums, everything at our fingertips is actually wonderful. Our streets are very clean, far cleaner than most other larger cities I have been to recently.Our downtown / midtown neighborhoods are growing exponentially, I really enjoy the diversity and the wonderful neighbors we have . When I read some of the comments though, as many of us live here say, we can’t believe the lack of knowledge by some of the posters, they act like it’s the year 1990 or 2000 still, they obviously haven’t been down here, or if they have gone to one or two places and then left. Most seem to live many miles away, and quite frankly don’t seem to realize exactly what’s even going on presently. Many go on and on about past corrupt mayors, and they were, however that was 8 to 10 years ago folks, we have had a new administration for two going on three terms now, and it’s much , much better. It doesn’t do much good to live in the past of 10 to 20 years ago. Better to look at today and look forward.Take some time to get to know the city and Midtown… Detroit still has an enormous amount of work to do, especially in some of the outlying neighborhoods, with renovation needed badly and crime of course an issue, but the city , especially the Downtown, Midtown, Riverfront , and near east and near west areas, has made enormous strides in the last five to ten years in many directions. Enjoy it.
west coast transplant here. moved to Michigan when i got a job in automotive, and have spent the last two years in Corktown. i think that if you're a native or a long-timer with an emotional investment in the city, then there's a lot to be excited about. no doubt that the city's come a long way from its worst days, and it feels like there's more cool news about community development/projects every month. but if you're coming from LA/Chicago/Boston/NYC/Atlanta/Seattle/Portland/Austin/Miami/DC/etc. with certain preconceived ideas of city life, then Detroit tends to disappoint in my opinion. yes, Detroit isn't nearly as bad as the stereotypes make it out to be. but it also just kinda mostly feels...quiet, empty, and lacking much diversity. and when you add that to the fact that auto insurance is sky high here, and the 2.4% city tax, and the crazy millage rate, and the lack of mass transit you mentioned, and the crime, and the bad roads, etc etc etc...then it starts to become a hard sell.

I grew up in the Detroit area. So I had a good point of reference when I watched this. Certainly you did your research and it's highly accurate and informative but... if I'm going to use over an hour of my life watching a RU-vid video, it better have more B-roll than just someone driving around! Ground level shots of most of what you talked about would help tell the story a heck of a lot better. This is major documentary length my friend so the video should reflect that along with some high end graphics. At least you aren't another Detroit basher.
I'm not a fan of renaming venues and buildings. The city should have left it known as Cobo Hall; not some bank name that usually doesn't have any inspiration behind it other than for commercial or marketing purposes.
I haven't been downtown Detroit in years! But I really enjoyed the tour! I think he missed a few areas but overall he gave a great tour!❤️💯 I'm surprised how quite and peaceful most areas seem!
The Hudson site has made massive progress! I work in the quicken building next door (I don't work for quicken tho, gross) and it's fun to see the progress!
I work inside the new Little Caesars HQ and can say flat out it's probably the coolest office building in the city. Very very nice inside. Oh, BTW, the Lions are the new hotness in the NFL, so that part of the video did not age well.
I was in Dearborn, detroit in 2011 on a short business trip. While driving back from Troy after visiting my friends, I missed taking the exit and went straight to Detroit downtown. I had no cell phone or map with me. It was so scary getting lost in an unknown country and downtown like Detroit. But luckily the people whom I asked for the route were so friendly and helpful. I managed to get into the freeway and correct exit to Dearborn. And Someone warmed me about an exit that takes you to Canada. That exit was so confusing..
Grea video Chris! I live in Detroit. Downtown is much safer (cops are everywhere) and the area is well taken care of. because most of the money that flows in to Detroit, goes thru Downtown (Business District). So thats where the city focuses most of their attention. Most of the crimes that make the headlines are committed within the residential districts. The neighborhoods are the complete opposite from what you see downtown. Not much Police presence like Downtown has, city Codes and laws are barely enforced or maintained by the city within the neighborhoods. its obvious that the money is what they care about, not the people.

The Hudson's move to Minneapolis was the result of Hudson's being bought out by Dayton's, which was based in Minneapolis. Dayton's parent Target later sold their stores, Daytons, Hudson's and Marshall Fields to Federated. Fwderated consulates their brands to Macy's and Bloomingdale's. The remaining legacy Hudson stores are now Macy's in the Detroit area
Hudson was many of the building torn down the five/dime so many There was a fabulous second hands vintage shop, behind Hudson ..Detroit was something in its heyday

Detroit's downtown area looks larger, not congested, green, multiple laned streets and clean. Unlike SF, LA and NYC's manhattan these cities are congested and full of homelesness..
