The Junkyard supply of Big Block Chrysler engines may have dried up years ago, but there are still plenty to be found out there in old RV's, Dump Trucks and Irrigation pumps. Here's how to tell them apart along with what will, and will not work in your hot rod.

@ Adam Culbertson... Tony had an episode that talked about doing this, reversing the orientation of the piston installations in reference to which side faced towards the front of the engine... Mostly done on Pistons with flat-tops and crown shapes that do not interfere with the valves or combustion chamber... Why? Because some Pistons had the pin position slightly off-set, apparently to quiet the engine down... So Tony was saying that reversing the orientation of the Pistons could increase the power output, and make the engine more efficient... How? Presumably, because of better connecting rod geometry on the power stroke, and increased dwell-time the fuel has to burn and create pressure for the power stroke... A very interesting concept that was brought out into the open by Tony-here on You Tube AND in the David Vizard book 'How to build Horsepower', and Smokey Yunick's book called 'Power Secrets'.... They found ways to get more power from stock parts... The reverse piston trick really revealed some amazing results on otherwise stock mild-mannered equipment that were Tested on the dyno's.... Good Stuff that is often overlooked otherwise...

I just love these old 66' - 67 Chargers. My brother got one for his first car back in about 1974. It was a 1967 with the 2 barrel 383. It was blue with a black interior. The previous owner had put slotted mags on it. The 4 bucket seats and the front and back consoles were so cool to me. The instrument panel with all of the gauges and the 150 mph speedometer were impressive to 14 year old me. At night the gauges gave off a cool blue light at night that was so bad ass looking. I still think that body style is one of the best to ever come out of Detroit. Even now when I look at cars for sale I make a point to look at these Chargers.

Back in the 1980's a farmer bought a 440 from a salvage yard for his farm machinery. The dealer wanted a fortune to rebuild the factory engine. Farmer got pissed and bought the 440 without even knowing it would fit. He another guy worked at, welded some brackets and made it fit. Something about radiator hose, they had to siamese two or three hoses to make it reach. But it worked and it had more power than the factory engine.

A couple of things: The reason the industrial motors had a different water pump setup was to elevate the fan. This was done to get the fan closer to the center of the large rads. The Charger, don't cut the frame, take it to a body shop and have them pull it on a bench. This will bring everything back into shape.

Another issue to watch out for is the industrial cranks like in irrigation engines and other similar applications. They will have eight bolt drive flanges but they are not the Hemi/six pack eight bolt pattern. This means that you will need to find a different crank, but hey, cheap big block mopar engines.

I was building 413s 440s for the local utility in the late 70s early 80s and they had these engines in their digger/derrick line trucks. They also had 413s in water pumps and some stationary engines and i seem to remember those had gear drive cams. They thought they had a lot of rear main seals leaking, but we found that the "dipstick tubes" were loose in the block and the rotation of the crank was throwing the oil out around the tube and the angle of the block let the oil run to the back and look like a rear main seal. Bad "mechanics" cost that company a lot of money by replacing engines that did'nt need replacing!
@BobF315
@BobF315 Год назад
Some Industrial knowledge,71 and earlier had gear drive and reverse rotation cam, also reverse rotation distributor drive to drive the distributor and oil pump in standard rotation. 72 and later had factory double roller timing chains. The later 413’s were under bored 440’s, I have one that was safely bored .162” over and sonic checked. I also have one stamped 440 but still has its factory 4.185” bore. And they did make headers, a lot of motor homes had a tube header that fits the industry flange.

Never went deeper than points and a valve lash on it. My boss had a pair of slant sixes on an irrigation pump. Someone would come out to work on the well or the sprinklers, and spend a half hour fiddling with vacuum gauges trying to get them pulling the load equally. He shut them back down til dark, and when he fired them up, set the throttles by the glow of the mufflers.

I have 1960’s 361 industrial engine that came with the 413 industrial heads. But Tony you left out the 8 bolt flanges that they come with if they were in a medium duty. The crank will not work with a normal big block bell housing. The flange is about a 1/2” further out, and has 8 bolts so the crank can’t be used for a normal car/truck. If you watch the Roadkill episode with that 60’s D100 where they grab that big block bell housing, it’s actually the industrial bell housing that will not work with a regular crank. A divider plate is part of those bell housings for that 1/2” out flange. Also has a hydraulic clutch master cylinder bolted to it. So if you see six bolts you’re good, 8 bolts you will need a crank. Also a good identification for the medium duty blocks with the 8 bolt flange is an large letter T cast on the side of the block. My 361 has the T upside down, but it shows it’s a “truck” block for the bigger trucks. And there also is a 1 through 5 number cast next to the T. As far as I know the higher the number the stronger the block. Example my 361 is a T-4 block. You should only see this on the 361 and 413 engines.

@Jeff Greenspon only real cooling problem is the radiator is getting brittle after near 50 years and have had two tubes crack in the corners - had to pack RTV around those areas - it's holding good again. And replaced the original water pump two years ago - doing that from the bottom by braile was fun....

But heck gas was what 28 cents a gallon in the 60's and they only tested them once a year lol. @@stuckinmygarage6220 I had originally bought autolites, couldn't understand why they didn't feel right when I tried to thread them in. I searched the Internet and found they take the 5/8's style plugs due to less clearance because of the water jackets. They are tapered,just smaller circumference. Went with the original Champions- which by the way are now under an altered stock number than originally. I will be out where I keep the Winnie later on today-will send you the Champion plug # , if I still have the box- I believe I do .

@AaBb , pulling it straight would be a good thing, but this 'Frame' is actually a UNI-BODY design of sheet metal no thicker than 0.062" in the places where the buckling has taken place.... The floor-pan & frame-stubs that are spot-welded together, are probably fatigued and/or cracked where the buckling took place... The repair needs to include doublers that are attached to the areas where the bucking took place, after it has been straightened... It will require a fair amount of tooling and sheet-metal expertise to do this properly....

The industrial engines sound like something that'd be pretty good to put into a turbo application, where you'd more than likely leave the manifolds anyway with the benefit of the better exhaust cooling to not burn the valves out.

My older sister ordered a Bronze 383/ 4 speed Charger black interior a month before they came out in '66 . At 5'3", 98 pounds, she could barely push in the clutch, LOL! I was 13 and thought she was the worlds coolest sister! It was really cool getting dropped off at the front door of the school every morning since my school was right on the way to work for her. Growing up in a Detroit Suburb, we weren't very far from Woodward Ave and of course she cruised with it. She dabbled in street racing but if she won. it was because someone had a 283 or just let her win. With her struggle with the clutch and the factory shifter, she wasn't really a contender... but she looked cool, the dual exhaust sounded good and people thought she was the Dodge girl from the comercials!! Anyways, she married a guy with a new black '68 383 Road Runner a few years later and blaa bla bla. I always loved the electroluminesent instrument cluster at night along with listening to her lear Jet 8 track with Jefferson Airplane, Beatles, Blues Magoos, Donovan, Yardbirds, etc, etc. playing from it.
