I think most people think 2015-2018 was pretty much peak strongman. Z, Shaw, Hafthor, and Eddie all at the height of their powers leaving the rest of the field behind.
FIRST OF ALL YOU MUST BE A CASUAL EDDIE DOESNT BELONG IN THE SAME SENTENCE WITH SHAW PERIOD ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE..EDDIE WON ONE DAMN CHAMPIONSHIP AND YOUR PUTTING HIM WITH SHAW? GTFOH
@@ajgrant94 using straps as cope is hilarious. Once the weight on the bar is over 800, it’s very common for guys to complain about the strength and durability of their skin limiting them before their grip. Are we going to start telling competitive cyclists that they should be using paper thin tires, instead of those meant for long competitive rides?
@@ajgrant94Benni's "1015 lb" deadlift on a one-day federation with who knows how calibrated the plates are doesn't hold a lot of weight, pun not intended.
I was going to ask if you've lost weight, you look good but then he had to say make it an ad saying it's the shirt so I don't care anymore. He's not very nice anyways. Not that I don't like him, but I think he would agree with me
Yeah a lot of people overlook how much this would have impacted his overhead events (the only ones which he didnt place 1st or 2nd). Especially on the stone overhead where the pec would have been needed to squeeze the rock for stability on the narrow grip lift.
@@ashleygarvin7177 Thor's overhead strength was definitely a weakness at the Arnold's. Hopefully, he will be fully recovered and up to speed for the Rogue Invitational.
It was but he is the back to back winner he is allowed a bit of a wiggle room arny didn't seem to mind. And had he found it disagreeable you can be sure he would have shown it like he did with a bodybuilder who tried to hug him on the stage
@@TheKbthakur You mean Arnold? Well, Arnold is generally a very positive character, I don't think this is the issue here though... it's more the audacity or cockiness by hooper, thinking about pulling such a thing off. I mean, the guy is one of the most iconic human ever, he is in his 70's and you get him up from his chair to see you lift a rock?
The stone they used in the stone press is so round that people are afraid that it slides out of their hands and drops on their head. They would be a lot more confident and able to press more, if the stone had edges, like the stone that the women had to press.
I agree. I get that there's an inherent risk to strongman events, but I simply would not want to risk pushing that stone above my head unless I was 105% sure that my grip is secure. It's already massive, just give it some edges.
I agree with most...I think it is even a plus that Mitch loses it from time to time and gets in the most positive sense arrogant. That guy is in his late 20s and suddenly realizes he is da män..combined with adrenaline and a rush he loses it sometimes and doesnt even realize how he comes across..and lets face it..any of us who were in sports and halfway successfull had this moments too..that actually makes him relatable
Yeah, I totally agree. I've watched Mitch on live stream in pretty much every pro show he's been in (except WSM, where no such thing exists) and he basically always says or does something a bit cringey. But it's because he's basically a pretty normal dude who is excited to be in the spot he's in and doesn't really know how to behave.
The event order was so fkn dumb. How are you going to do event 4 with a 400lb press for reps, and then event 5 with another akward press after your delts are just totally taxed. Atlas stones to finish would of been way more fun to watch.
Yeah, I agree with that. They just should've had stone to shoulder for reps and been done with it. Would have been much more exciting and a better spectacle.
FYI, Mitch was responding to Arnold Schwarzenegger during the Stone Medley because the announcers gave him the microphone to yell "YOU CAN DO IT!". So, he was just responding to the crowd's energy. I was there in person watching it, I can tell you that the Announcers as well as Arnold interact with the athletes a lot more than you can hear on the Live Stream. It feels like a totally different show with the energy level. But regardless, the Stone Medley was definitely a Victory lap for the Moose. So he was just giving back to the crowd imo. Great commentary! You always make me laugh.
It looked like he could have easily pulled 10 or 15kg more. It is probably mental. Big Loz said Mateusz was going to Estonia to train with Rauno and Aivars. Maybe Rauno can help him with the deadlift.
I like Hooper. I think he is trying to become as famous as possible and as quickly as possible to make the most money possible. I have no evidence to back it up, but given his life prior to strongman like running marathons and such is that he plans to shine as brightly as possible then retire from strongman early and on top. Just a my two cents on it. I do appreciate the lift heavy be kind motto though, and he apparently trains really hard and is really strong.
It's definitely not the sport to do for a long-time if someone wants to live a long life. I think Mitchell is hyper-aware of the price he is paying right now to be on top, and wants to get leaner and take less shit, but can't as long as he competes in strongman. Hence why he is going big now so he can go home and clean up later. Basically what Thor should have done, but is too stubborn to do.
What's scary about Thor is that his grip is actually better now than it was when he swept the majors. He's also faster. Who had him placing second in both the frame and the Webster stones? Once his pressing power returns, he's going to be an absolute force again!
As a polish fan, I follow Mateusz on socials etc. It seems that he is struggling with finding any outside help for the deadlift. He tried working with a few people lately, for example Krzysztof Wierzbicki (the guy with 502,5 kg sumo). And of course he lacks confidence.
If not Eddie, then someone from Shaw's team, or even Shaw himself could help him perhaps. I really hope he can somehow "Unlock" whatever is holding him back on the deadlift, because it always hurts him so much on every competition. I'm sure as strong and gifted as he is, with his frame, he should have a 951 or so deadlift in him with the right preparation and people to train him.
That brings its own problems because freak deadlifters cant relate to Mateusz' issues... they do 2 different things. Needs a coach who has worked with all kinds and understands the demands of strongman. Hard to find. If I was him, Id take 6 months off events and dedicate it to pulling
Was it cringe what Mitch did, yeah, he knows that, he's a bright guy. Was it a big deal? No, he had already won, the rest was just (poor) showmanship... nothing to loose sleep over...
Another thing that drives me mad is when people say that Thor has to break the DL record on a competition. They have the guts to call that clown show a competition. Eddie Hall decided the rest times, the weight jumps, the lifting order on a plataform tailored for him. After his lift, they interviewed him and made Jerry wait for more than 30 minutes to give him his chance! Than Jerry tries to pull and tear his hamstring. The disrespect to call that a competition when one of the competitors had power over the other competitors and the entire show is beyond disgusting. Eddie never lifted on a competition, that's false. Calling that a competition is the ultimate disrespect, especially towards Jerry. Thor's lift had calibrated and weighted lifts for the people to see and 15 minutes as set rest times. I cannot stress enough how Thor's lift not only was harder to perform because he didnt choose the rest times, but its a much more offical lift with offical parameters and rules. Not the clown fest that Eddie's Hall personal and close friend, business partner Coolin decided while screwing the rest of the "competitors". Not a competition, Eddie never lifted on a competition, it was a clownpetition. 🤡
Haha Ill take flack for doing opinion pieces on my opinion-piece-youtube-channel over pulling a 76 year old man out of a chair to watch me lift. Your fan-boner is showing.
@@AlexanderBromley Well, I came here from a recommendation on RU-vid, I did not put in the effort to look into your channel and what it is about, I am simply interested in strongman content as I lift myself. My comment is an opinion piece as much as your video. As for being a fan, I don't consider myself a fan of anyone really. I do like Hooper, as I found him to be a likeable personality (online at least) after I noticed his existence when he won WSM . I am not, however, following him like I would imagine a fan would do.
@@AlexanderBromleyyou say a 76 year old man like he is an average Joe, he walks up to the athletes numerous times during the two days during the contest, also just because it’s an opinion piece RU-vid channel doesn’t mean you’re not gonna catch any flack for having a bad take 😭😭😭
@EpicwinFTW27 based on what, the poll you didnt take? 95% like ratio my man. Believe it or not some people actually concern themselves with standards. Anytime I talk about sportsmanship, there is a very noisy crowd that pulls the angry teenager "you care?? Thats so cringe" bit and they are always exactly who I mentioned in the video: anti-sport-pro-celebrity fanatics who dont like that I made a criticism about someone they like. Ill take any serious argument agaisnt my position at any time (if you have one, Ill consider it!). But "thats cringe" is a bathroom graffiti level response and gets treated as such
I don't follow the sport closely. This is actually the first time I've watched a competition start to finish. I didn't know any of the athletes names or backgrounds other than Thor, and even that only because my wife liked GoT and I ended up rewatching it with her. But, Singleton being a former WWE superstar kind of explains the "worst offender" but as far as showmanship goes. I thought most of it was pretty fun if I'm being honest. Though, I haven't gotten to Hooper's blooper yet. I do think watching it "live" will leave me feeling pretty cringe as this video did. I will say, I like how Thor has carried himself so far.
You could tell Thor still has a way to go with his recovery from his pec tear. His shoulder was not stable at all. I don't think the comp was as stacked as it was made out to be. I don't the the polish guy that wasn't mateusz should have been there. Tom Evans was not as good as some other guys that could have been there. Maxime is borderline. Also Hooper is fantastic but I don't think Tom Stoltman should be forgotten so quickly. He's an absolute unit and he has every attribute necessary to beat Hooper. I was surprised he did so well when Luke wasn't there. That is something that could have easily thrown him down into the dark.
Yeah Tom has been chipping away and now has arguebably one of the strongest overhead presses, having it previously been one of his weak spots. His deadlift will continue to increase into his 30s and when Tom is on point, Mitch wont win. The real issue is Mitch doesnt really fall back on any event, so you have to be very good all round to beat him. Like Martins was before he stepped out a bit.
@ashleygarvin7177 yeah I knew Tom was going to be a beast overhead the first year he took second at world's. He was the only person to lift every log in the medley on his side and there was some elite pressers on his side. On the apollon axel this comp his lifts went overhead quicker than cooper's did and hoop was trying to split jerk it. Tom's deadlift is elite. For his size he is really fast. I think this competition has been in his head and that's gone now. Tom was a close second at world's last year after taking a huge break. It is odd how little he is talked about or how no one favors him to win competitions.
@alik5972 he could hardly do any of the events. For a competition that is supposed to feature the most elite, he is far from there. Gavin Bilton, Luke Stoltman and many others were a far better choice.
@@CodyBunkerhe qualified as the Arnold Amatuer champion, he had every right to be there, It was a learning experience for him and he will improve with time.
Oh man, I'm a fan of Mitch Hooper, but that was a ridiculously embarrassing note to end on. Bro, you just set two world records. Don't bring up Arnold to leave him hanging.
I love you Bromley, but the huge stink you made about Hooper calling Arnold to the stage and ultimately failing the last stone is such a redditor thing to complain about
For real. Arnold built himself on showmanship, it was in no way dragging an old man out of a chair, it was treating him in kind ... Title if the video is about Thor, second half of the video was an unhinged rant against making a show a show.
@@OneDougUnderPar can you explain how getting Arnold to come watch you lift makes it a show. He already won, he wasnt going to beat Mateusz, there were no stakes, and the "showmanship" literally killed his psych, preventing him from doing it in the first place. You have to be allergic to standards to think this wasnt a douche move.
It’s the Arnold! It’s supposed to be entertaining and not serious. Entertainment is keeping the game close. Hooper dominated when he didn’t have to but wanted too.
@@willbradley3201 That what I said too. Mitch didn't just win, 11.5 points...it wasn't even close. I though the 'Arnold' thing was funny. Mitch is strong, but like Arnie himself, a technician, that knows how use the mind, for himself and against his competitors
You guys are all whiney puritans, stop getting your panties in a bunch over another man not acting exactly how you'd want them. Diversity of personality is great for sport.
Hooper only has a quick rise to fame because all the other main characters basically all dropped out together. So they needed their new Hulk Hogan of strongman.
I totally agree with you about Hafthor's 501. Eddie whines about what Thor did to him in 2017 about the WSM title but Eddie did the exact same thing to Thor with this lift.
I never understood all the Eddie Hall fanboys trying to discredit Thor's deadlift. The thing was clearly official. Nothing against Eddie personally, but that lift counted and it's bad sportsmanship to bicker about it imo.
Nah issue with his lift was it was in his own gym so please tell me how you think that makes it a legit lift when Eddie had to do it in front of thousands of people 😂😂 those plates that Thor used might have bee legit but we don't know that lol your literally pulling at your gym with your weight so no it wouldn't count. All he would of had to do was do it at an event but he didn't. Plus all the sponsorship bs to try to credit it makes no sense. He's Thor why would he be doing it behind closed doors?? Com'on man think for yourself 💯 it's suspicious no matter how you look at it. Especially being that he's been known for cheating in events thats why he through a damn fit when Eddie won the world's strongest man. Because he kept trying to cheat his lifts an failed them because of it. An tried to discredit Eddie's win. So please tell me you at least know that much. And if so you should be able to figure your own conclusions that actually makes sense. A showmen doing a record breaking lift behind closed doors lmfao 🤣 😂 💀 SUS!💯💯
@@FishingGingerly99 Question. I just started training at a 'Strongman Gym'. There are tons (literally! LOL) of regular plates, but also the Name Brand 'Pro' calibrated plates, so a 'legit' lift could be made. I guess someone could fudge with them to make them lighter to fake a lift. Would Thor really do that? No question in my mind that Eddie kicks ass and takes names. At their level, I would agree that 'record' lifts should be done under official conditions. I can't doubt Thor is very strong, but I have no dog in the race, I am a fan of most of the competitors. - Cheers
@@FishingGingerly99why would Thor ever do his lift behind close door? Maybe there was a f*cking pandemic in 2020?? Did you live under a rock? Thor literally announced that he will lift 501kg before the pandemic. Since there was a lockdown, he did it in Feats of Strength event held by World Ultimate Strongman, an official strongman federation. He was also judged by an offical strongman refree, the same guy who officiate in 2016 WSM and many other events. The weights were also calibrated live and infront of the judge. Thor also followed a strict 15 mins rests after each lift unlike Eddie who broke the rule and rested for almost 30 mins. He was allowed to do that because his buddy Collin was the officials. The same guy eho officiate the 2016 WSM where dragging event was removed from the final because Eddie was struggling in his group eith dragging, or when Viking press rule was changed from "No resting but double dipping allowed to No double dipping but resting allowed because it was tailor made for the fattest and most unathletic WSM winner ever. When I saw Mitchell use the Clean & Jerk, you automatically came to my mind, I remember a video you did on shoulder strength and you dismissed the clean & jerk. But I think the jerk helped him use less energy than he would if he used a push press as it is easier.
Really enjoyed the ASC. My only problem was with the fucking round stone over head in the final event. Such a sketchy lift. Thor damn near dropped it on his head and I'm surprised no one else did.
Not everyone is involved enough to care about the metaethics of conduct and how it impacts community values on a broader scale. Some are tightly involved in team activities, coach serious athletes and mentor youths.... others go to the gym once in a while and touch themselves while watching the occassional lifting highlight reel. From my experience, "First person to take it seriously is a loser" is the battle cry of teenagers and underperformers.
Love all your content! Can’t stop laughing. I’m a 50 yr old fireman 5’8” 155 obviously never gonna be a strongman but hitting a 1000 pound total and half iron man triathlon this year. I appreciate your advice and humor to increase my lifts
He never did, the only thing he did was called out Colin Btyce for the obvious controversy about event changing last minute along with others strongmen in a post that lasted a whole 24h and was only known to die hard fans. Everything else is just Eddie's bullshit. Also Luke Stoltman's leaked phone call literammy confirmed Nryce has cheating arrangments with the brits.
Stones are most fun events to watch, cause it's freakshow and that's how Strongmen as a sport came out. Love it. Stones, logs, flipping cars, keg toss and all other weird things - HELL YEAH! Deadlift? Keep it for powerlifting.
I laughed at Mitch, he knew he had it in the bag. Had he just lifted the stone once, with no fan fare, nobody would be talking about, but look how he has everyone talking. I have noticed the people commenting with the 'cringe' word, are trying hard not like the Moose, but there is no way to deny him. He didn't win this event, he destroyed the field. I think he is smart enough to perform for the crowd, but also when to tuck in and do the business. He can dead lift more than he did, but he knew he didn't need to. Look at last year, never won a single event, but took the trophy. I do think it is fine that people have their own opinions. If we didn't differ at all, we would have nothing to talk about. Look forward to more 'coaching' content, but also break downs and opinions of events or breaking news in the game. - Cheers
Every Arnold’s I’ve watched, when he’s in attendance he comes up to congratulate the winner at the end. Mitch asking him to come up wasn’t forcing him to get out of his seat. He was likely coming up in a couple of minutes no matter what. And besides, Arnold seemed to enjoy the whole spectacle.
I understand where you're coming from with the Mitch and Arnold situation, but saying the same thing over and over in different ways for the entire 2nd half of the video was a little weird. Arnold didn't seem to have a problem with it and I don't think anyone really had a problem with Mitch doing what he did towards the end except for you. You're allowed to have fun and be serious about the sport at the same time. I'm not a huge Mitch fan either, but let the bro have a little fun while he's absolutely dominating the world of Strongman atm.
I like the video concept and you are a good pick for reviewing strongman events humorously, but I think you got a little lost in rambling about about Mitch's oopsie for half the video.
I'm going to switch to boxing like Thor. I'm 36, weigh 210lbs at 5'10. Got a bench PR of 275lbs for 3 reps last month....I've been experiencing extreme systemic fatigue for over 2 weeks now. The training was 6 days week for 6 weeks leading up to the pr, but my sleep has been on average 5.5 hours a night. Trash. Anyway, I'm satisfied with the pr. I got it on camera so I won't feel that I need to prove myself to ppl in the future because I can just whip out the phone if I ever feel someone doesn't believe me. Because of this, I feel comfortable dropping the strength training and going purely into boxing for longevity.
I'm a fan of the sport. Not solely a fan of Eddies. Brom, you have to acknowledge the benefit of being able to wake up in your own house, eat at your own table, shit in your own toilet and then hit that lift in your own gym. That is objectively very different. He still lifted the 501 but under completely different and far less stressful circumstances.
I mean he didn't have much shorter drive to the event than Eddie had as Eddie deadlifted near his home too. Both also had their own barbells and platforms to lift on, except that Thor's weights were weighed live and he had stricter rest times. Overall a stricter performance than Eddies. No hate to Eddie though, his 500kg was a moment in strongman history, it was unbelievable. But it's just stupid from him to still be salty that he doesn't hold the record anymore.
Im pretty sure the place where Eddie did the 500 was about an hour away from his home. He got to wake up in his own house, eat at his own table, shit in his toilet, and then hit that lift in the arena.
That's why speaking deadlift, Eddie is still the most well-known record holder but not Thor. Thor is not lift in a competition. Also, Thor just add 1 kg on top of Eddie is just like the provocation. (Seriously, who fucking guys will add 0.5kg to each side. And I actually think Thor can hit more if he train for longer. But he just want to kick Eddie down from the world record) I don't think it is weird that Eddie have a counter back
Always confused me how Mateusz could SPRINT with 400kg for so long but not even deadlift it for so long Dude got a weird complex about avoiding it for sure
Let's be honest, Mitch dominates cause he's the freshest. No injuries, 3 years competing... Remember when Novikov dominated all comps and was on podium each time? When Martins could pull out some great performances? Mateusz before tricep tear? They all have great moments and dominate the sport for certain time, but when injuries start to happen and that "wear and tear" moment from heavy sport like this, than its what we saw at Arnolds, that happend to Novikov, Martins and Mateusz. Its hard for them to get back to the level they were, if its even possible...Thor will comeback, no doubt, his deadlift is already there. But for now, Mitch really is the best guy. Cant see anyone beat him this year, but maybe next...
This is what I’ve been trying to tell Hooper fans who have been proclaiming him “the greatest strongman ever”. Hooper is legit a great athlete, but he’s not competing in the late 10’s (Shaw, Hall, Thor) and his biggest rivals are all coming off injuries and layoffs.
Hooper does great on some of these events, but yeah, if the Hooper today would be competing in these competitions from 2016 to 2020, he'd be 3rd place at best on any of these competitions.
None of the comments above makes much sense. He is winning because he is fresh? Well it's his third year competing by your logic someone competing for the first year who will be fresher than him should beat him next year then. And the statement about him winning because of the weak lineup doesn't make sense because the number he is putting up. He broke 2 previous records at the Arnold if the athletes you named were so superior why didn't they set these records so high that an athlete like Hooper wouldn't be able to reach it's just nostalgia my friends
The very nature of record breaking necesitates an increase overtime. That's why we generally rate athletes on a curve. When one athlete sets a record, another will realize that new record is achievable and can be beat. If that wasn't the case then stronman would've peaked decades ago. What we're saying is that the lack of competition means Hooper isn't dealing with the same kind of competition and that there are less strongmen ready to also smash existing records. Take the deadlift for instance, Hooper still isn't putting up numbers to match Hall, Thor or Shaw. Do you think having strongmen like those three currently competing at their peaks would lead to Hooper still winning the Arnold?@@TheKbthakur
Funny to me how Bromley “wishes strongman would go back to the theatrics and showman ship that is the roots of strongman” while also demeaning Hooper for trying to do so. Big Bromley guy but his jadedness towards the sport shines thru sometimes and it’s brilliant 😂
Jaded is probably the right word lol. In my defense, showmanship goes beyond 'make a scene, any scene'. Like a comedian telling a joke, it still has to stick the landing.
@@AlexanderBromley that’s fair I suppose. There is an awesome to watching a comedian work out new stuff and just bomb. I enjoy it all. Anyway, keep up the awesome content I’ll always be watching and judging 😂
@@AlexanderBromley also I do agree that Hooper bring Arnold out completely checked him out for the lift and he barely looked serious with the win locked up… I liked the Dinny stone crowd look tho cuz just how revered the stones are and it seemed much more real and visceral like a fuck you to the other competitors s
Thor should be able to dominate WSM now. The competition is so weak compared to when he won. No one is dominating, a new guy wins almost every year now,
Mateusz is a head case. He could pull so much more if he just believed that he could pull so much more. Also there is no stage flex anymore. They’re on the floor.
It's so cool to see Thor back but, for the sake of his health, I hope after he gets a few more big titles and breaks a new big record or two he decides to downsize and retire for good.
Thor did good for now, his deadlift is his best lift so of course he can bring that back up fairly easy in comparison to some other things. He has some work to put in if he want's to be on top but he has to take it easy and not try to rush into it or he'll just end up with another injury. You can't just take long periods of time off the sport and come back on top just like that when everyone else is putting in the work all the time year round.I bet a lot of people thought he'd have an easy victory based on his training videos leading up to the competition and his strongman history but that's not how it works.
2:42 Obviously this is a bad take. To ignore the things this man went through last 3-4 years is just insane. The fact that he even pulled 388kg is a miracle.
So his trials didn't impact his ability to press, load, pick, carry world-level weights.... but his deadlift is uniquely affected? I've been an injured strongman for 20 years; injury is not what's holding him back.
I didn't see this until now but I agree with you, it was super awkward. Although Arnold was pretty cocky himself back in the day and did all sorts of little mischief.
Yes, thors strength seems to come from his vast entourage and the desire to deploy/bring them every-bloody-where. But you aren't allowed to complain about a wall of them getting comped front row seats, in front of people who paid top tier $$ for tix.... Rogue panders to him pathetically.
