"Flowers in the Rain" by The Move became notable not only for its musical success but also for the controversy it sparked. In 1967, the band's manager, Tony Secunda, used a promotional postcard featuring a caricature of then-Prime Minister Harold Wilson in a compromising and unflattering light, which led to a libel case. Wilson won the case, and the High Court ordered that all royalties from the song be donated to charities of his choice, including the Spastics Society and Stoke Mandeville Hospital. This song also holds the distinction of being the first single played on BBC Radio 1 upon its launch.
September 30th marks the birthday of BBC Radio 1. In 2017, Inside Out West Midlands, with the help of Bev Bevan, Trevor Burton, and Roy Wood, looked back at the controversy surrounding the song. Hosted by Nick Owen, it was first broadcast on 2nd October 2017 under the title "Remembering Flowers in the Rain."
