Trace the history of the eugenics movement in the US, and discover how the belief in ideal genetics led to forced sterilizations.
--
Since ancient Greece, humans have controlled populations via reproduction, retaining some traits and removing others. But in the 19th century, a new scientific movement dedicated to this endeavor emerged: eugenics. Scientists believed they could improve society by ensuring that only desirable traits were passed down. Alexandra Minna Stern and Natalie Lira detail the history of eugenics in the US.

It does not matter how much we learn of the past to "not repeat those mistakes"... because if the agenda is good enough, if there is some profit (doesn't have to be money) to be gained from whatever action/idea/practice in question, the horror is no longer the issue. People will keep on repeating and repeating and repeating those mistakes. Why? Because we are selfish, greedy and cowardly by default; elimination of any real or imaginary threat to one's lifestyle must be dealt with no matter the cost and /or consequences.

@@sahrajama1515 Charles Darwin did not endorse the idea of a superior race based on intelligence, but more of his own preferred characteristics. The countries with the highest IQ are predominantly from East Asia (Japan, Taiwan, Singapore). Most of the technology that have been developed by Europeans are actually reinventions from other ethnic groups like China, such as gun powder, paper, the compass and so on. Polynesians built their own sailboats before the arrival of the European voyagers. They were also able to navigate with the Moon, Sun and Stars giving them the nickname the "Navigator Islands". Charles once quoted "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most Intelligent. It is the one most adaptable to change". Although we did not sterilize as many individuals as in other countries, many mentally disabled, handicapped and/or criminals was put behind bars or in institutions for life, and thereby isolating them from the rest of society. Some people were put away just because they were deamed un-proper, “misbehaving”, and outside the norm and there were laws preventing certain kinds of people to marry, so they wouldn’t bring children into the world. Such as , "you wouldn't want weeds to grow in your garden" and "No farmer is going to let his defective livestock breed with good livestock". So the argument goes, why let weeds grow in the garden of humanity? But the implementation of those ideals is where eugenics becomes so horrible. Don’t forget that Hans Asperger (yes, THAT Asperger) personally oversaw the IQ testing and subsequent killings of tens of thousands of children on the Spectrum. Of the few that he saved, all were “high-functioning” and male. Girl children with autism, regardless of their abilities, were not spared, as excessively analytical personalities were considered “highly masculine.” Roughly 500,000 to 750,000 people deemed “mentally deficient” were murdered by the Third Reich. Over half of them were children. A quarter were under the age of three. Don’t put his name on our community.

They are obsessed with the impending climate disaster that they believe will result from population growth in the developing world. Nevermind that it is the developed world that is destroying the climate. 30 babies born in Nepal would be less devastating for the climate than one baby born in America -- 0.4 metric tons of CO2 emissions per capita in Nepal versus over 15 per capita in the US. In this case, the frame is being moved from economic inequality to cultural inequality. It's smooth. Iceberg Slim would tip his big purple hat to modern politicians and their teams or propagandists. It can be argued that Europeans adopted the behavior from foreigners seeing as how much of dark age Europe was driven by religious conformity. It wasn't until slavery was introduced into Europe that the idea of selectively breeding humans caught on and that was directly because they viewed slaves as livestock. my main concern is that people have kids more kids i dont care who they have them with. 3/4 of all abortion clinics are in minority communities why is that?
@marinhaalternativa3829
@marinhaalternativa3829 2 года назад
@@constantineergius1626 Probably because they are being predated by the clinics, capitalizing in their burdens of their marginalization, so instead of showing how strong they are,building up a better payoff(Children getting scholarization and jobs to increase familiar income), they're finding abortion an easier solution because it's widely available regardless of condition(Even if they could sustain kids). In the end 2.5 kids per 4/10 families, is just making minorities even minor, or alternativelly, they decide to assimilate into the homogenous culture. So this case is being mascarated as a "Right" while it's just alienation of minorities.

This talk did not even mention the forced sterilization of indigenous Americans (emphasizing that eugenics were conducted against immigrants) and how forced sterilizations still continue *to this day in the United States and Canada*, instead wrapping up the American story by talking about repealed laws and shifting the focus to the entire globe. This isn't to say that the forced sterilization of immigrant communities and contemporary eugenics practices around the globe aren't important, but this talk completely misses a demographic that is essential to the eugenics conversation in America and doesn't address that these practices are still being continued in the US and Canada.

It is fascinating that you talk about this without context as though it is still not common for this to take place in other parts of the world, even without race like in Japan. This is about using science to control the direction and destiny of human civilization at the root. It goes even deeper than racism, even though racism is frequently how it is manifested. It is also done against people of the same race or of lower status or those just deemed undesirable.

In Canada we have a program called MAID (Medical Assistance In Dying). Basically, it's at way for a terminally ill person to end their life via medically sanctioned euthanasia. However, the program was recently expanded to include those who are mentally ill. This has raised a lot of ethical questions and is straying the line between medical ethics and eugenics.

The sad irony is that one of the most important things for a child’s development is to be wanted and loved by their guardians. You can see from the legal action they took that at least a good number of these women who were denied the right to have children were passionate about becoming mothers, and for that reason they probably would have been better parents than the dispassionate, obligated white women who were deemed ‘fit to breed’ despite not really wanting to have children. They distorted a whole generation of children by skewing reproduction towards those who felt obligated by society instead of those who actually wanted children. And just to add insult to injury, when those white women did want to be sterilized, they were routinely denied the procedure.
@maryeverett2266

Those from non-Western societies likely grew up in a troublesome environment, meaning they would've created the same environment for their children. Wanting to have children doesn't mean they will be good parents. The psychology shows otherwise.
