Today, Robert Downey Jr.'s career couldn't be in a better place. After his portrayal of Tony Stark in Iron Man led to the beginning of the most successful movie franchise in history, it seemed RDJ could do no wrong. But in the years before Iron Man hit theaters, Robert Downey Jr. was seen as a major liability and unemployable by most movie studios. But one lucky turn in this Shane Black movie changed everything for Robert Downey Jr., and led to his massive career turnaround starting with Marvel's Iron Man.

Robert Downey Jr is one of the few celebrities I have followed throughout his life. I don't like watching/reading/hearing about celebs' personal lives, but this guy was a household favorite. My mother absolutely adored him, and we watched most of his movies as a family. She has always kept up on celebrity gossip, so I always knew about the latest arrest - and I remember when we all thought he was done. A few years later, my then-girlfriend and I watched KKBB and absolutely loved it. The chemistry between the two main stars is wonderful, and the way the movie seemed to be written just for Robert Downey Jr stoked feelings that he was back. Then, of course, Iron Man was announced - and we just knew he was on to big things from there on out. The side-tragedy that he played in Oppenheimer was refreshing in its reach for him as an actor, and it shows that he may just pull off the aging acting role perfectly.

I don’t feel that Iron Man 3 is one of the best of the MCU films but I did enjoy it very much. The final battle scene was dragged out too long for me but otherwise it’s fine. Ben Kingsley stole the film in my opinion. Less Than Zero was a heartbreaking film for me and especially knowing that RDJ was playing a semi-autobiographical role. The story may not have been written with him in mind but he played that character as if it was. By all accounts, he shouldn’t have been working after that except at a car wash. I’m glad to see that he was able to hold it together long enough to turn his ways around. And blessings to Mel Gibson for sticking up for him when he did. He certainly did not have to.

I watched RDJ's career rise and fall in real time as I was a kid when he was in supporting roles in Weird Science and Back to School. Every couple years throughout the 90s seemed like a come back only for him to stumble again. He still put in some great performances during those drug addled days, but it was wonderful during the MCU era when we stopped worrying about him and just enjoyed the work. Seeing him get that Oscar for Oppenheimer (after losing in '92, but tbh that was a stellar year for best actor noms) was very touching. So many careers (and lives) are ended to addiction, it's just great to see how good it can get when you turn things around. Great video.

Downey's father gave him "drugs", plural, not just marijuana. Any interview I've read or seen, whether it's with RDJ or his dad, references drugs. What happens when a child's body is subjected to the poison of drugs? RDJ had that in his system from the age of 6. Told a judge that he was an addict by the age of 8. Addiction wasn't a choice for him. His near death experiences and incarcerations were a direct result of his father's irresponsibility. Also, he didn't fall asleep in the neighbor's bed, he passed out and had to be revived by paramedics. What is truly miraculous is that he is able, day by day, to overcome the grip of addiction .

I saw Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in theaters and I knew RDJ would be back. It is such a great movie.

I loved this movie so much and was rooting for RDJ the entire way. As someone who watched all the moments going back to SNL I really wanted Downey to get back to what he was so obviously good at, other than taking drugs.

Recently a movie reactor watched Rodney Dangerfield's Back To School. Since her only experience with Downey was the MCU, his appearance & performance floored her. At first he refused to believe it was him, until she looked up the credit. I truly enjoyed two of his earlier works, Only You, and Heart & Souls.

Also around this time he did an AMAZING independent film, produced by Sting and his wife, call A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. It starred RDJ, Channing Tatum and Shia L. Recommended!

I really like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. So many clever twists that feel like they just occur naturally from the character interactions. For me, it's Shane Black's best writing and probably Downey's best performance.

That's a pretty big claim given RDJs filmography.

Heart and Souls was the first movie I saw him in. I had it recorded on VHS and used to watch it a bunch. Then Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was such a fun movie, and I loved his interactions with Val Kilmer. I wasn’t originally interested in Ironman, but saw it outside the cinema on DVD and was curious where the rest was going to go. What a great look at his trajectory. Thanks!

When Iron Man forst came out, I think fans were predicting a dip into the Marvel stories where Tony had fallen into the bottle and worked his way back out. When we saw Robert, we knew he'd already done that in real life so only greatness would follow. And it did.

I'm always surprised that people don't reference "A guide to recognizing your saints" when discussing RDJs career timeline. His roll may have been minor, but the film was great and he gave a stellar performance. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is also fantastic, I just think it's interesting few people mention it.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the definitive film that made me say, “Holy shit! RDJ is back!” It is just such an amazing story, performance, ensemble that is irrefutably undeniable. To this day, it still remains my favourite RDJ performance… although Tropic Thunder came in a pretty close 2nd. Iron Man is the most consistent and well suited character for RDJ, but it just looks too easy for him. He IS Tony Stark. The other 2 performances I mentioned are so good because of the work he had to do as an actor to make them so enjoyable. No matter what people say, the mans story will become that of Hollywood legend. So very few actors have such a massive falling out and recover to elite status.

I'm surprised there was no mention of the movie "Less than Zero" (1987), which according to RDJ himself, he was high half the time while it was filming. A great movie BTW starring Andrew McCarfthy and Jami Gertz

Yeah, Downey's interpretation of Tony Stark set the tone for the entire franchise as a series that did not take itself too seriously and just had fun with the roles. Cruise doing it would have just been another Mission Impossible style franchise. And while that may have worked out for Cruise, it would not have worked for the franchise.

His Oppenheimer performance was amazing, I kept forgetting it was him. Big contrast to someone like Bryan Cranston who while a great actor ends up feeling pretty much the same in every serious role he plays.

I'd argue that it was the combination of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang & Iron Man that saved his career. KKBB revived peoples confidence in his acting ability but it took Iron Man to convince the studios he was a bankable star again as well as no longer an insurance risk.

Acting wise, you haven't seen anything until you've seen RDJ's performance in _A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints._ His performance as _Iron Man,_ especially in the first, is something to behold. His performance elevates a popcorn, superhero, action flick to art. If you want to study performance, study his in _Chaplin._

RD Jr. is charismatic, and when he is well cast, he is exceptional. There are only a few actors that can save bad movies. But I'm not sure that is the tallent of the actor as much as the loyalty of his/her fans.
