For our latest mission, thousands of people followed secret, synchronized instructions delivered via headphones in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The crowd of around 2,000 people created real-life Instagram Boomerangs, cheered for random joggers, and made music together with drum sticks and household objects, surprising the New Yorkers and tourists in the park. The drum sticks were generously donated by Promark, and the event was a partnership with Make Music New York. This was all part of our our fifteenth annual Mp3 Experiment event.
A huge thanks to the amazing community of people that come out to be a part of this event every year. So many of you came up to us to tell us how many years you've been doing it, or how far you traveled to be there (some from out of the country!) We're so proud of what a diverse, joyful celebration the Mp3 Experiment has become. As silly as the project is, it's life-affirming to be in a crowd of strangers, all smiling, laughing, and supporting each other. You should end every public mass flashmob with "every one picks two trash items from the ground" to clear the area from rubbish. That would be the perfect end leaving the place better looking than before.

We actually literally do this at every Mp3 Experiment. This year's script: "We're getting ready to finish up, but first we want to leave the lawn spotless, so pick up any additional items or trash you see in your area and put it in your bag. Make sure you take your props and drumsticks home with you. They are yours to keep. Let’s leave Brooklyn Bridge Park cleaner than how we found it." Trash pickup doesn't always make it into the video, because, you know, it's just people picking up trash.

The most important part is that a large group of people unitedly did something. Tremendous and extraordinary friendly behaviour rarely we can see now a days but the war & hatred between people. Such a joyous and playful moments you people spent together. Respect the Human nature. 👍

nahid rahman that’s what I always think when I watch these videos, most people think it’s because of what they are doing that makes it so fun but in reality it’s the fact that they are doing it together, if you did alll this stuff alone it would be half as amazing, you probably wouldn’t even bother!

I'm rewatching this at a time in 2021 when we can finally cautiously hope for an eventual return to normality thanks to vaccination and testing, but still face a lot of uncertainty due to virus variants and misinformation. It really makes me feel so melancholical. Like, this seems so far away in the past, even though it has only been 3 years. I want society to be able to return to how it used to be, but I know it won't. It will never be quite the same again, quite so innocent. The virus has scarred our collective consciousness and has made many feel deeply uncomfortable and vulnerable in the proximity of strangers. I can imagine that there are still many people out there who would want to participate in fun social activities like this, myself included, but even among those people a sizable portion will probably feel uneasy at the prospect of high fiving strangers or having their personal space invaded for a photobomb. Yes, wearing masks is a possible precaution, but it takes away so much of the emotional expression, which I would argue is a prerequisite for this sort of experience. You want to see the other people smiling, just as you want to smile yourself. I don't know where exactly we will go from here, but I truly hope we will find ways to enjoy each other's presence again.

I love how this event is all about uniting people, not just participants but everyone. You also see that every race and every color is represented having fun together. White, asian, black, latino, arabic, male, female, young, old. These videos just make me so happy. Shame the 2019 one didn't get uploaded to youtube. and well, in 2020 this isn't possible. I hope we will have a new upload in 2021 for the mp3 experiment. Shame I can't participate myself from here in the Netherlands.

I like how people who aren't involved just slowly disappear from the video and it transforms from a "impress/confuse passersbys" to "do some funny stuff that could easily be made into a TV-show for small children"
