In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, our White German Shepherd Dog, Thora and I visit the Jackson House State Park Heritage Site. The Jackson House State Park Heritage Site is a small park in Lewis County, Washington, containing the restored home of John R. and Matilda Jackson. The Jackson’s were some of the first Euro-American settlers north of the Columbia River. This was the first courthouse in the Washington Territory, where the first court case was held and the location of the first convention to propose the creation of Washington Territory in 1852. The Jackson homestead was visited by yet to be Civil War generals, Ulysess S. Grant, George McClellan and Philip Sheridan. The Jackson House was an important stop on the northern section of the Oregon trail on the way to New Market (Tumwater). The cabin you see here today is a restore building. The restoration utilized as much of the original building’s materials as possible. Please join us as we visit this small location with a large history, the Jackson House State Park Heritage Site.
