This is a behind the scenes interview with Pat Priest "Marilyn" from The Munsters and its a great one!
I chat with Pat about her special relationship with Al Lewis "Grandpa", Fred Gywnne's lack of interest in "Herman" once the show ended, and the pranks during filming The Munsters. Pat discusses the initial intimidation of Yvonne DeCarlo, the audition for the Munsters and her close connection to Butch Patrick. I also talk to Pat about working with Elvis Presley and Lucille Ball and her overall acting career. Pat tells it like it is and also expresses her love of her fans! Amazing stories. Mrs Pat Priest is still very beautiful. I only got to see the re- runs of the munsters but I never missed the show every Saturday after all of the cartoons were over whoch was usually around 1pm. This was Saturday cartoons in the 1970s..

I understand where Fred Gwynne stood on the matter as an actor, but... the silliness notwithstanding, Herman was a WONDERFUL dad - he worked hard, he loved his family... There were a lot of kids (me among them) who would have given ANYTHING to have Herman Munster for a father.

I know, so many kids loved him and Herman was always there as father. Herman is iconic as well. It is a shame Fred was unable to feel he could embrace that and have a fulling encompassing acting career. Unfortunately he would have seen too many actors around him being seen in the entertainment industry in one role only and I am sure that scared him. I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Pat Priest and you could not ask for a nicer lady! Absolute sweetheart! Very accommodating and just a nice, nice person. I also met Butch, but he was not so nice. I was asking him a question, someone came up to him, asked him a question and he just walked off. No "sorry, I have to go." It left me a bit jaded. But I have been to the house in Waxahachie in 2019 and my boyfriend and I did the tour. Absolutely amazing!!! Sandra gave just us the tour that day and if you haven't been there, you need to go!!

Gosh, I am so envious, I would love to meet Pat in person and how cool it must have been to see the house in Waxahachie. I know Pat quite well but we unfortunately missed each other recently when the opportunity arose to meet each other. Sorry to hear that about your experience with Butch. Might have been a bad day for him as I have spent time with him and he is actually a very nice guy. Thanks again for your story!

Marilyn was my favourite character, what I liked they over look Marilyn's appearance and treat her with love and kindness.Lily treated Marilyn more as a daughter than a niece.

Miss Priest sure has a great memory AND an excellent sense of humor! IIRC, in a recent she'd see she said she'd small children looking at those mid 1960's studio pics of Marilyn then at her so she'd tell them that she was Marilyn's GRANDMOTHER selling the pics!

Probably the smoothest actor transition in history… I still love to watch the Munsters and was curious when they switched out Marilyns so I got on Google and clicked on a few links😉 I had no idea Pat is from Utah- where I grew up and live and I have to say she was the best Marilyn and I’ve enjoyed listening to her stories 👍💯thanks

Great interview!! I loved the Munsters when I was growing up in the 60s. And even as a kid I knew right away when Pat joined the show. AND I loved the movie when it came out, but couldn't believe Pat was replaced!! Yes, Batman was a great show....but so was the Munsters. The casting was brilliant.

She is so amazing and I was fortunate enough to meet her and spend an afternoon with her and Butch and had I known about her incredible TV history beyond The Munsters I would have surely begged for the stories! This interview was incredible!

Thanks for sharing Pat with us. And yes, all the older TV that was seen in the 60 & 70's. Back in the day is what my kids watched on ÑIC at night. One was "Get Smart". I liked the Waltons and Wagon Train. It brings back nice memories of ones who have passed away.

Great interview!!! I would love to meet her and Butch. I thought she would have mentioned that Spot's head was the tyrannosaurus from the 1957 movie "The Land Unknown". I wonder what she thought of other reincarnations of "the Munsters" including the newest one.

In the interview, a question was mentioned how Marilyn was related to the Munster's. In an early episode, Grandpa mentioned that he had many wives, so it's possible that Marilyn's mom was a half-sister to Lily. Possibly that's why the character was "normal," vs her family being monster-like.

Oh John, and Pat: what a wonderful interview...John, you are always so positive... there is a false sense among the public that "Hollywood" people are all "...fruits, nut, or flakes" and my family was shocked when I got into the business..and I've been here for over 60 years. I was blessed with great luck to have begun it all on The Waltons as a production assistant, then assistant director as certainly Judy Norton will attest to. Bottom line I had a wonderful career...it was all about family, producing shows that were moving and inspiring, and so wonderful Pat had this experience also...thank you for this uplifting interview...and Pat I wish that our paths had crossed!

Hey John, your comments are always so appreciated. This is definitely one of my personal favorite interviews as I am a huge Munsters fan! It is true that the business is overshadowed by a bad wrap but I too have been blessed in so many ways with great contacts and friends in the entertainment business. I will let Pat know how you feel. John Cato, Shawn Rhymes here. I finally saw the piece where Pat Priest was talking about Elvis Presley. The shows Back to the Future and Quantum Leap came to mind, when thinking about if we only knew, baseball cards in the 70's Apple Computers early days in the 80's. Investing in those back then. Who knew? I have the Disney movie The Apple Dumpling Gang on DVD and part of the bonus material is kind of an interview with Don Knott's and Tim Conway talking about the movie. I think Larry Hagman was great in I Dream of Jeannie, but he was way too serious for me in Dallas. I'll finish the episode later, I'm going to have dinner now and watch an episode of Quantum Leap.

You just have to laugh at the reason she gave for cancellation. I think the fact that the show was in B&W made the show. It fit so well with the genre. Not to contradict but I have seen 2 or 3 interviews sighting Fred's health issues because of the heavy consume being the reason for cancellation. He was sweating so much that he was loosing weight on a medically serious level. And that also contributed to his refusal to return to the character.

Always interesting to hear other takes on a story. I know it is crazy to think of the Munsters starting out as a color show. It just fits black and white and there is something so comforting about it as well😀

I always thought the cancellation of the Munsters was mainly due to Batman. Batman was in colour but run for two seasons. I always thought the Munsters was better in black and white.

I know everyone has a theory about the cancellation of The Munsters but I definitely believe what Pat said. From things I've read over the years about the business of television, it seems the whole issue of b/w television shows going to color really was a big deal economically. Patty Duke, in her autobiography "Call Me Anna," cited this precisely as the reason why The Patty Duke Show was cancelled. ABC wanted to take the show to color for the fourth season; United Artists knew the show was a hit and they believed they could leverage that so that they could get at least another year of the show in black and white. It didn't work and ABC opted to just pull the plug on the show. It was all economics.
