The theme was re-made in the late 1970's, for the Tom Baker period of the show. The original 60's version created by Delia Derbyshire, used individual tape splices of recorded 'samples', re-recorded from a master, at varying tape speeds for the pitch of every note needed. Every note used was one splice, which she edited back together creating one long sequence. Genius! The 70's version used synth's. The CS80's ring-mod and brass featured, as well as an ARP Odyssey playing the main melody:)

Haha. I just stumbled across this and realise I know the guy who introduces the video. Mr David Goodman, from the band Crisium. I was the drummer in Crisium for 3 years and we used to lug his massively heavy AS systems modular around venues, along with an original Mini Moog. And I thought setting up a drum kit was bad enough!

Cool to think that just 15 years ago you had to actually go to music shops and had to buy stuff like this (I learned on a little moog keyboard and I had a cool little td-808 drum machine when I was 8), like, they had to come in huge boxes and you had to fill a whole table with equipment like synths and equalisers and mixers and modulators, and 15 years later, you can fit all that onto a computer chip, or send it via internet on a non-existing website and install it on a laptop as a vst/plugin. No one else thinks that's weird? I'm not against it what-so-ever I think it's brilliant, makes the whole process way more manageable but I just think it's cooler to have more of a hands on approach.

My word. What a video. This is stunning on so many levels! To see Bob Moog Sculpting once more.. & to see the Masters at work with their amazing machines from a dying age. It's so sad in a way that nothing even remotely similar to all these wonderful synths is being made now, unless you have lots of money & have it built especially. The time of Analog synthesizers is long since dead. And music now is opposite; Loud, Non-expressive, Brief & Digital. And the Music industry is all but dead.

I'd say this whole collection and museum was worthwhile in that Bob got to go there and we were able to have documented a nice teaching moment from Dr. Moog himself.

Great video!!A treat for analog junkies like myself who can only remember many of these great beasts back in the day!Makes me want to go tweak away on my own collection which pales in comparison to the collection shown here...I truly wish I'd kept many of the old classics I once owned like some of those shown. To try and buy them back now would cost a fortune no doubt! So anyone thinking of selling classic synths like these-don't!You'll regret it!Trust me..Keep them! Thanks for posting this video!

Actually there's quite a lot of synthesisers like these being made now. Eurorack based systems are incredibly popular now.

13:39 Bob Moog's jaw drops, "Well it's what I thought but it looks....when you finally see it... it's a.... looks about five times as much (as I) thought..it goes on forever....ha hah...It's like analog heaven."

at 40:40, that guy said that Jarre's lazer harp performances are fake, but there are videos of the the thing losing power while he is playing it, and it stops. Jarre totally plays that it :)

I do love traditional instruments, and even play a couple... But why do I get all nerdified in the presence of synths? I get a VCO fever! Crying shame that this museum closed in the mid 90s.

The Doctor Who theme is cool, but it was done mostly with tape loops and sound effects, not synthesizers. It was "electronic", but it wasn't a synth.

The Moog Rogue was called such so that it rhymed with his name. That's where I first found out I'd been pronouncing it wrong. I've pronounced it right ever since but most people don't bother and he never minded.

I'm glad that you found it amusing. The net is a strange place, where everyone seems to take offense to people because they replied to a comment.Or they'll click on a vid to dislike or bash something.Precisely the reason that I look up specific information.Ahhhhhh 18,919 views,no dislikes.Beautiful thing. This what the people who developed the first concepts of social networking had in mind.(ie BBS,irc chat, etc)I write messages this long because I'll never see this vid again and need to show love

sure they can.... Many of the better digital synths these days can add noise and subtle random pitch and filter fluctuations to create the sweet and subtly flawed analog sound

Weird though, you would think that its pronounced "Moo-g" cos of the sprelling, I mean my surname is Logue so I would have though that moog was pronounced Moo-g too. But I heard on a oldpink floyd video recently that its pronouced "Mogue"

I despair of synth experts who can't pronounce 'Moog'. Get it right guys: 'Moog' rhymes with 'Vogue' - they used to give out badges that said that.

With all due respect to Moby, I am a sci-fi fan and I love synths but refuse to be labelled a 'geek' or a 'nerd'. The future belongs to those with the intelligence and imagination to create new things and to hell with the ignorant dumbasses who think we are nerdy or geeky 'cos they cannot compete with us!
